My second son ended up coming home from school with a case of head lice last month. They found two nits on his head. So we shaved his head to about 1" and did the two treatments. I washed all his bedding, hats, scarves, tuqs, everything I could think of (except for this damn hoodie thing he didn't take off until well after I realized!!). He still seemed to have them. I had him vinegar his head every night and I'd comb through it every second night.

Then his dad comes home again. JS had just came back from his dad's when they diagnosed him the first time. So anyways, before he goes I make sure to explain to dad THREE FUCKING TIMES that he needed to get the treatment again, to vinegar his hair every night and comb thru every second or third to be sure they were gone. AND he had to wash all the bedding and scarves, etc. to be sure they were gone.

After they left, I said to DH, "I bet he comes home with a roaring case of them again."

I hate being right.

Today, after a week with his dad, JS comes home again. I ask what they did with his hair. Oh, they didn't get a treatment kit and they didn't comb it. But they did have him spray vinegar water on his head and shower every night....

I spray his head with vinegar and let it sit for 20 minutes to release the "glue" on anything that might be in his head. We stand at the sink and I start combing through. Instead of finding none or one or two, I find about THIRTY or so. HOW FREAKING DISGUSTING!!!

So now he's got 1 centimeter of hair left and we're going to get another treatment kit tomorrow. I went through JJ's hair and, guess what? He's got them too. We've shaved his head to the 1" and will do all the treatment for him too. Now I have to wash ALL of their bedding, tuqs, hats, hoodies, scarves, blah blah blah just because dad WAS TOO DAMN LAZY TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why do I feel like I'm pounding my head on a brick wall with that man?

Oh yah.

Cuz I AM!!!

That's just rotten... He is lazy and now his children are going to suffer for it and you are responsible for cleaning up the mess!! How ridiculous! I'm sorry purrrkitten!!

Honey babes..just ONE treatment..read carefully the directions
as the treatments can burn like hell if give to soon. Most say
only once in every 24 hours...

My grand kids stayed with me for 2 years during a hectic and
tragic time in their young lives  13 and 9 years old.

We put them in a very nice, albeit expensive, school only to have
them get head lice as well. I about lost it..I was so pissed but I am
told this is NOT uncommon. Please..please be patient..

the children still remember GrandPas explosive temper when I went
to the school. It made one hell of an impression..a bad one I think.
The best thing is to treat it and be done..no big deal..honestly..

    Hey kitten,

Sorry to hear that your ex is such a jerk. Just think though, he'll probably end up with lice himself. Ah, sweet revenge!

Sadly, lice is very common depending on the school. Not that there's any snobbery in lice - they pick anyone to land on!! I know the treatments are only done once a week. That's why I do the vinegar thing too. Helps keep it down to a very dull roar. When I combed every two or three days, I'd find maybe one or two. That I can handle but THIRTY or so????

Bleghghghhaghgh... it gives me the heebiejeebie willies.... *twitch itch yuck*

X2 probably does have them. He probably hasn't bothered to check either... And since he's driving and sharing space with his dad in a rig, his dad will probably have them too.

Problem: Next time he comes home, do I let the kids stay with him? Do I have a choice??? And if they come home yet again with lice after we've treated and removed them all???? ARGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!! I could drive myself nuts with this...

I hate head lice and when my kids were in school, every year at least one of them would come home with head lice.  One year the kids got it and it took me 6 months to get rid of it, we all got it.  We had 9 people in the house. I spent boucoup bucks on shampoos and spray and shit.  I finally got everyone squared away.  Hopefully your ex gets them and anyone else that was too lazy to tend to the problem.  I fully understand about how gross that is.  I hate bugs anyway. I home school my daughter so that takes care of the problem every year.  I never knew that about vinegar but if I ever come across those critters, heaven forbid, I will remember that.  Now my head itches :/
Your ex husband is an asshole, he didn't do anything about it because he doesn't have the kids for that long so in a way he doesn't feel that it really is his problem. What a jerk off
  • husbandhater said on Jan 03, 2007....
What your ex did is considered medical neglect. Tell him the kids are deathly ill and stop his visits till the lice is gone. Try an over the counter lice kit that comes with sprays and stuff. When one of my kids got it we cut the hair all off after treatment and sprayed down anything and everything in the house, couches,etc.,. and washed whatever could be washed. I hate lice and the ring worm those are the nastiest things created and my kid after going to a nice private pre-school( see Copper I understand that part) got the "worm" one year. The middle shared with the oldest and had toalso be medicated. The lice happened before the other 2 were born the oldest was almost 2 and a sitter had a visitor who brought it to her home. She alerted us we did treatments washed and sprayed everything and cut off all hair. I don't remember it taking months more like weeks.

Been there...thinking about commissioning t-shirts. Now, the oldest goes with the girls to see their dad even though she doesn't like him, so she can keep a watch on them and do what has to be done, like bathing and tooth brushing and yes...lice control. They've come back more than once with it.

They hate it. I hate it. And we don't really have the option of just getting rid of the hair. They are girls. They like long hair.

This is one of the myriad reasons we are EX-spouses.

Sorry you had to have this fun. It really isn't.

oh no i am soo sorry i no what ur going threw. people that you have to send you kids to and dont take care of there homes makes your life harder. and that shit costs so much. i can tell you cause my allgerys i can use the teatments so i use olive oil it messy but you put it in your hair anf put a bag over your hair and paper towles around the edge of bag to get the drips. leave it for over 8hrs and they are dead all you got to do is get the eggs. and you dont have all that toxic stuff on your head and it makes your hair soooo soft ans shiny.good luck with this and i hope you get the other side to understand they got it and they are passing it.
  • purrrkitten said on Jan 03, 2007....

I don't think that I can just not let my kids see their dad. He is only around once a month as it is. They get so upset when he doesn't see them.

The treatment isn't all that expensive here (there are a lot of poorer kids that get it and so they need to keep it cheap) and it's not like he couldn't have afforded it. He just didn't bother. That's what pisses me off. The fact that he pretends to listen drives me crazy. I haven't figured out if he's being passive aggressive or just plain lazy. I wish he'd get it through his head that he's not just annoying me but hurting them in the process.

This is typical. There have been times when JS should have gone in for antibiotics and not until he's come home again. I don't know how he can stand JS' coughing all night long either. For crying out loud, they're in the same room!

I'm mostly annoyed by having to once again wash all their stuff. I have a new washer/dryer combo that takes about 4 hours to complete one cycle. Usually that's not a problem but when you have to do four loads of laundry in a short period of time...

Purr....i once worked as counselor in a summer camp sponsored by a large company in Italy. Well, you wouldn't even imagine how many kids were sent with their head full of lices! One of the first thing the camp recommends parents is sending the kids for a medical so eventually those nasty bugs can be detected in time.

But since they didnt want to keep the kids at home for the summer and they had to go in vacations without, the very responsible parents didn't even say to the doctors about the lices....Guess who had to take care of all of them? Me and the other counselors. It was simply nasty. We wore surgical gloves and kept our hair tighlty in a plastic cap. I had to take care of 6 kids a day for the whole treatment cycle. Other counselor had the same amount of kids.....

These poor kids were not allowed then to have lunch with their peers and they have to stay in separare playrooms..they were miserable, we were miserable...i couldn't stop feelign itchy all day...and checking my scalp....its really disgusting... ..

Luckily my daughter never had an episode until now. It must be some kind of karma compensation after having washed all that hair.......lol.

About your ex....well, thats why we are ex.....they wouldn't listen to us even if we would be telling them to evacuate the house because of a terroristic attack...they would say.."Stop trying to control my life"... Specially if there are new SO involved...they have to show who is the man.....

sorry for your ordeal.......its really unnerving..it makes you just wanting to smash his head with a gigantic bottle of vinegard....or make him drink it....:lol...Good luck...

i must be the only crazy mother here. i have not cut my kids hair to treat them one time. i as a young kid got it easy long soft clean hair they love that kind of hair. so as school starts i do a head check everyday. the kids have called it mommy monkey time. but when i have found it was when a friend came to saty and i checked her child she was covered in them. so i treated my hole house and the family and i started at 8 am treated them as they sat in a area that was clean kitchen. i went after the house. i then sat son down picked threw his hair 2 hrs and about 60 tiny ponytails later he looked like that pin head on that scarey movie. then i got my little girl her hair was to her butt. so i wasnt done until 4 am i did little sections and braded each one as i was done. and i never ever use a comb i pull it off the hair. and i put it on a white paper. (so you can see them) i no it sound like alot of work but the way i do it if i dont send them around someone else with it they are done in one treatment. also to help you kids. take a shampoo bottle your kids use and put the treatment in it. that way they are getting treated all the time and it helps to not get them. head lice is so ruff on a mom and i feel for you hun. and good luck makeing the ex understand.

why 1"? Why not just shave it clean like Kojak did? :)

  • DustySunbeams said on Jan 03, 2007....

That really sucks.  Lice are...they're gross.  And the treatment to get rid of them is so time-consuming sometimes.

When I was a kid, there was a huge outbreak of headlice at this (you guessed it) expensite hoity-toity private school that I went to.  We had in-class demonstrations and check-ups, schoolwide assemblies...the works.  My teacher was checking me for lice and said that she'd found some on my head, so they sent me home with an order to make sure that the lice was gone before I came back...and a reccomendation that I get my hair cut short for the duration.

As a girl, I'm sure you can imagine that getting my hair hacked off was no fun at all.

What's worse...turns out there wasn't one fucking louse on my scalp.  Not. One.

    -S.

  • CreativeWoman said on Jan 03, 2007....
I read on an alternative healing list that I belong to that blow drying the scalp regularly helps to kill the lice.  I have never had to try it myself, but I hope this helps.

Hmmm... I've never heard of that... I think I just might try it!

    Thanks CW!

I've heard that too. But you have to use the high setting. The high heat frys em.
  • purplescooby said on Jan 04, 2007....
The blow dryer thing does help. All 4 of my kiddos have had them. Worse with the girls. My 4 yr old got sent home just last week with a head full of nits. No bugs, just nits. I've been working on it everyday, but until they're ALL gone, she can't go back to preschool. Vinegar releases the glue? I'll try that right now. thank you all , and I feel for you. Were we  all married to the same guy?lol

I am so sorry that your ex was such an ass about the whole thing. I promise, not all men are as incompitant. But something that you might want to try next time your son comes home with headlice since you have tried and tested everything, something I found that worked on me. I wanted to try something all natural since I was burned by Rid because of my frustration. Try looking up this product I used and see what you think, ok? http://www.licekiller.com I hope that you can find some comfort and piece through this nightmare...Much love and prayers

Hair conditioners may coat or cover the lice, so they should not be used before applying anti-lice agents. Wash all bed linens and clothing that have been in contact with the infested person in the past 2 days. Use hot water and the hot cycle in the dryer. Some recommend that water be at least 140 deg F to effectively kill the lice and nits. Most hot-water heaters are set at 120 deg F for child safety. This lower temperature may be effective. All nonwashable items such as stuffed animals should be placed in plastic bags for 2 weeks then opened outdoors. Dry cleaning may be an alternative. Disinfect combs and brushes in hot water or alcohol. Soak for more than 5 minutes in very hot water (greater than 131 deg F or 55 deg C). Vacuum floors and furniture, especially couches and areas used by children. Throw away the vacuum bag immediately. Herbal therapy and oil treatments have not been proven to work.
Do not use gasoline, kerosene, or oils. Burns have occurred. Do not shave the person's head. This drastic measure is not necessary.
