I expected that there woud be much more hoopla on this site about the deah of on of the great leaders of our time.  I'm not talking about Gerald Ford but rather Saddam Hussien.  That is what many individuals would have you believe, that the world was a better place wth him in charge.  For the moment I'd rather not debate wether or not the beginning of the end of the world was July 4 1775 or not.  Instead this is about the death sentence.

Is execution murder?  If it is (it is) is murder ever justified?  Does it make us just as bad as the original offender when we put them to death?  I am well aware that the US did not try or execute Saddam, that isn't the point.

For those of you who haven't found it yet the link is to Saddam's hanging.  Which brings up another question, should executions be televised?

I have mixed feelings about executing anyone, even Saddam. I got out of jury duty (a multiple murder case) last time because I could not bring myself to say that I would return a guilty verdict if I knew death was mandatory, which it evidently is in a multiple murder case. With DNA testing, etc., finding so many people innocent of crimes for which they were convicted (often many years after they went to jail), I think I would rather just put people away and let them suffer for the rest of their lives. I guess you have to weigh whether it is better to put someone out of their misery or let them rot away in jail thinking about what they have done, and dreading their trip to hell. Of course, guilty inmates always hold out the hope of escaping or being released by mistake to kill or harm again. How many small children would still be alive if criminals never got out to kill a second or third time? I guess the real question is: do I believe in the death penalty if there is absolutely no doubt that the criminal is guilty? Still not sure.

personally, while i have qualms about the way in which capital punishment is meted out, i reluctantly support the idea of havnig that option available. i do however hate sentencing guidelines that make certain penalties mandatory.

well... public executions were meant to dissuade other wannabe criminals back then. Nevertheless, it seems, as history will testify, that it doesn't work.

If you'd go by history, the capital punishment isn't that effective really in detering people from doing heinous crimes. Yet, spread throughout cultures is the idea of "an eye for an eye." That is, someone must be punished - and punished harshly.

I feel the same way as alienated regarding the death penalty.

You asked if the death penalty is the same as murder, and even though I'm against the death penalty I don't think they are the same. Are all soldiers murderers? I'd say no, and this is different, but the point is that all killing isn't murder in my eyes even if I think it's wrong.

As for saddam, I'm not going to complain one bit that he's dead, but I think the way in which it occurred was not a good thing. Hearing them chanting the name of a militia leader right before they hung him can't be good for our efforts over there and in the world in general. The fact that it looked like a mob hit and not a real justice system was bad too.
