Tired of viruses? Tired of crashes? Tired of slow booting up times?  All of the above?  Or maybe you've grown tired of having to pay a big company every year to "keep you protected", or because you've got to pay every time you want to install a new computer, even though you've ALREADY paid for that software.

I think you must know there's a solution.  It's for the brave, though.  Those who want to get their wallets out of Microsoft's, Norton's, and other's hands.  It means changing the way you've used a computer before: this time, it actually does what you want it to do.  No crashes, no viruses, no hackers, no money.  It's free. It's reliable. It's Linux.

Ubuntu Linux, to be precise.  Yeah, I know, you're probably thinking that you've got to pay at least something, that it's not secure, or that you won't know how to use it.  I say, Give it a try.  I'm using it, right now, while writing this post.  It looks awesome and has made my computer run a lot faster than when it used Windows.  Plus, the support and the help you get from people around the web is astonishing!  No "validation" every time you want to do something, consult something, or whatever.  It truly works.

Now, I'll let you make your decision.  You can do whatever you want.  Then again, I say give it a try.  It's free, after all.  I, for example, had never used it before, but asked for a CD and installed it nonetheless.  I haven't stopped using Windows, but now I have the option to use Ubuntu anytime I want.  And I do.

Just try it out.  You can ask for a free CD (they cover S&H and everything) of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Long-term support) here.  The CD includes a Live CD feature, which lets you try Ubuntu without  having to install it in your PC, without changing anything. It's totally safe.  And did I mention it's free?

Or, if you have really fast internet access, you can download the same version here.

If I caught your attention, but you want to do some more reading before trying it out, no problem!  Just go here www.ubuntu.com

so like is there a limit to the applications we can use? especially if they're designed for windows?

RollingC: I'm glad the info was of help!

Ormocanon: You're welcome! And Happy New Year to you, too!

Paidinblood: Well, Linux is NOT for gaming, that's for sure. Windows PCs are the widest platform for games. Now, the version I talked to you about, Ubuntu 6.06 comes with a lot of applications to get you up and running. You can't use MS Office, but you can use Open Office (which is free, BTW) and open every single file you created with a Windows machine. Almost every Windows application has a Linux counterpart, specially because of its popularity.

For example, no iTunes, but included Rythmbox manages your iPod... and Amarok does it even better.

LOL... I did some research and the game selection is not as wide as Windows. In fact, Windows has a HUMONGOUS array of games under its platform.  There's Wine though, a windows emulator for applications but like you said Linux is NOT for gaming.

I think it would be a lot better for just ordinary office stuff, like browsing, making presentations, etc... but the fact that you can run it with windows is a very big plus. I'm planning on putting windows and Ubuntu on another computer in case I feel like playing games. :D

    Thanks for the info. :D

    Much Respect,

That's what my DH uses, and he loves it. :) He can dual boot with ease, and gaming is about the only thing he uses Windows for now.

I wish more people knew that they had options like this.

justop: i'm insufficiently hardcore a geek to go linux, but the people i know who've made that migration never regret it. :>

Let's not forget macs. I used linux, and ubuntu, for a while then finally switched to a mac. Linux has a lot of hang ups that will give non geeks a hard time. I'm a programmer and those hang ups got on my nerves after a while.

well, I'm not making a good coherent point here :) Linux is great, it's free, and it can't hurt to try. Macs solve the same problems, are very easy to use, but are little pricey.

p.s. - I always use linux on my servers. Nothing beats it in that regard.

Wow, I'm back on the featured page with this one! Thanks, Ubuntu! :P

Paidinblood: Yes, Windows IS the man when you want gaming capabilities. Other than that, Ubuntu behaves perfectly well. Ah, see, a dual-boot system, that was my solution too, in case I want to play some Age of Empires III :D

the infernal optimist: DH? Let me guess... dear husband? (googled it and nothing useful came out). Yes, Ubuntu's ease grows on you after a while. I just couldn't believe it when my 4+ year old, and not-so-great-components computer ran so fast. I wish so too, that's why I posted about it! :D

NeverSayGoodbye: No problems man! Thanks for reading :)

Ed: C'mmon, you know you can. It's Linux for human beings, they say! Well, if you ever decide, give it a try. And you've got an advantage: those people you know can help you out ;)

bloc: I didn't forget about Macs, but as a broke student, I can't overlook the fact that they cost three arms, two legs, and an eye. I would love having a Mac, but given that I have no money, my only real solution was Linux.

I would really love having a Mac... *sighs*. Oh well, guess I'll have to save a lot for that! And I also heard that Linux are excellent as Media Center computers, since software for TV capturing and the likes is free and all.

It's a royal pain to set it up from what some of my friends say.
