unless you've been hiding under a rock, you're familiar, at least in passing, with the harry potter phenomenon. i got into it late--rowling was already on book 3 i think when i started in on it. but now that i'm into it, i'm really enjoying it.

so i'm going to make some predictions about what we'll see in book 7 when it's released next year. needless to say, spoilers abound all over the place re: books 1-6. consider yourself forewarned.

and now, without any further ado, my predictions, one for each hogwarts year:

1. severus snape will be found to be a loyal member of the order of the phoenix, despite his actions at the end of the the half-blood prince (book 6). in the beginning of book 6, snape takes the unbreakable vow, in which he vows to help draco malfoy accomplish his goal and if he fails, to take it upon himself to do it. i believe that snape is sufficiently canny never to take on an obligation unless he has a way out of it and it's his idea to take the oath. at the end of the book, he betrays the order of the phoenix but i don't believe snape is such a predictable character.

2. neville longbottom will finally have a moment in which he comes into his own and will shortly thereafter have a horribly tragic death. neville's eminently likeable--likeable enough that we care about him. so when he does have his death scene, it will probably be a turning point in the novel--quite probably the fulcrum upon which everything else in book 7 will turn.

3. ron and hermione will finally get together as a couple. but this one is no-duh territory.

4. dumbledore will remain dead.

5. all of the older weasley siblings, esp the twins, will get their moments in the sun, except for percy--he's a wanker. although i do expect him to have his comeuppance.

6. we will see again all of the non-hogwarts-based wizards and wizard students as harry re-forges dumbledore's army (from order of the phoenix) on an international scope, including viktor krum, as an adjunct to the order to search for voldemort's remaining horcruxes, one of which was obviously found by regulus black, sirius's brother and former death eater. that's probably somewhere at the house at 12 grimmaud place--rowling tells us several times that nobody's ever certain exactly what's in that house.

7. there will not be a climactic battle b/n death eaters and the order of the phoenix. instead, what i foresee is a very simple battle: harry against voldemort. voldemort will likely have set a magical alarm when his horcruxes are threatened and will arrive at the spot where the last horcrux is to stop harry from finding & destroying it.

well, those are mine--what are your own predictions for book 7? any thoughts about the predictions above? ed

You predict that Neville will die, but what about the other deat.  JK has said that two people will die in this book, and they will be people that she had not originally planned on dying.  I hadn't thought of Neville, but I could see that.  His parents are in Mungo's because they were very much like Neville when they were younger.

I think that the other death will be either Ron or Hermione.  Do you think that Harry will die in the end?  JK has said that she doesn't want the series to go beyond this point, even by other writers (fan fic).
  • silverwhisper said on Dec 28, 2006....
hey there, scrpbkqueen! thanks for visting my blog!

you know, i didn't hear that about JK killing 2 characters. i could see either ron or hermione if it weren't for the fact that ron's finally coming into his own now that fred & george are gone, and i believe JK's said she identifies w/ hermione so i don't see her killing off hermione.

hm...very interesting...what about percy or bill weasley? both of them would make sense, i think.

i don't think she'll kill harry--had she intended to do so, that would have been her plan from the beginning, and harry's been built up quite a bit as the inheritor to other things and as a leader. that said, i could see harry dying and neville becoming the rallying point for wizards opposing voldemort.

a friend of mine has a theory that harry would be installed as a hogwarts instructor, teaching defense agains the dark arts, which makes sense, although i have difficulty seeing JK wanting to keep harry there. part of what makes harry unique is that he was raised as a muggle, so becoming a full-fledged part of a cornerstone of the wizard world seems to go against that to me...

    Ed,

I hate to admit this, I haven't read one of the books!!  I would imagine that I'll have to in the not so distant future...I can wait. My Father and I have both managed to pass out at the movies, trying to watch!

My Niece has gotten every book, except the first one, on the release night.  She has finished a couple of them within 24 hours!  I remember taking her to the movies while she was reading one of them and she just started to sob next to me. I asked her if she was okay...someone died!  I wanted to be able to help her so badly!!! I felt so sad for her!  A book/story made her this sad...they have to be well written!

I hope I can get into them someday.  Let me know if you were right, lol!

Ed......yes, scrpbk is right.....JK said two people, actually two preminent character of the story will die before the end of the last book. Since she also said she is so fond of Harry that she cant stand the idea od other stories sprouting from her serie...i can believe she would rather kill Harry ...

**Ron and Hermione will finally give release to all their underlined hormones teen induced tension between them, but only after Victor Krum the russian champion of the wizardy torunament who invited Hermione to the dance wil be back and try too woo her again. Ron will finally understand he is going to loose her forever and he will finally find the courage to reveal her his feeling..... I am expectcing great pages about this love story...

**Dumbledore wil be back too but only as a memory in his pensive but it will be a very important comeback

**Lord Valdermort will be defeated and definetely banished from any human shape

**Neville is the wild card: he might die or he might finally assurge to the role he deserves and became the next great wizard of Hagwart..maybe the next Dumbledore

**Snape is another big charachter.......i think in the end he might die but with him we can expect any big twist...

I love this serie..i will be very sad after reading the very last word....:-)

Daily.......you have to read them!! My daughter and I spent lovely hours reading these book together, anticipating the new ones and going to the movies ...it our special connection

    I am a fan!!!

Got in late too...erm, guessing because I have the books in moving boxes to be brought to our house...I guess book three as well - I read the first and bought the two consecutive books after  finishing the first part and was totally captivated.

I will come back again (have not read the blog, and comments yet - yikes!, sorry, ed!), need to start supper and put everyone to bed first...

Being a wizard of some renown, and also being the most recent schoolmaster of Hogwarts, I believe Albus Dumbledore will be able to aid Harry Potter by appearing in portraits and tradings cards and pictures and stuff.  Though physically dead, I believe he'll be an important character in the last book.

That's my only guess.  I'll leave the rest for now.

Snape's gonna get his comeuppance.  He's gotta pay.

hi silver! thanks for sharing with us your predictions!

i'm a big harry potter fan and well i read all the books including the one that got stolen(the original order of the phoenix!). and well here are my predictions.

someone will be alive. it means someone fake his own death. i think dumbledore fake his death or siruis will come back since he never died properly. i agree with you that two people will die and one of them is neville. although his character has a big impact on the story.

well thats all i could think of right now. i'll come back again later!

  • tbs230 said on Dec 29, 2006....
Just marking this post, LOVE this series, my mother has a fit whenever I bring it up, she swears she won't read them, but then we have a fighting match on who gets to read them first (I always win, faster reader and all)...but very quickly, I think Harry and Voldermort will both die, one can't live without he other, or maybe Harry will almost die, but that's not saying much, cuz Harry always almost dies in every book :p...

Hagrid is never given the proper respect he deserves, I think he will be a huge part in the last book, seeing as how he and Dumbledore were so close...and that stupid rat will die, and I think the snake will be the last horcrux (I'm sure she was mentioned as a definite possibility in the last book, I will need to verify that later) and Malfoy will get his, Lucius, the father, not the son...although Draco needs to be turned into something edible and then feed to the spiders in the forest...and that's all I have for now...will be back later!

I predict that Lobo shows up, guts everyone, Rips Harry's head off and mounts it on hsi bike and then nukes the school for good measure. Then has a beer.
  • mousenphonic said on Jan 03, 2007....
Better late than never they say so here goes:

*Voldemort will defnitly die but seeing that he is technically already dead it won't count.

*There's alot of mystery surrounding Aunt Petunia, especially the part that being Harry's aunt she is able to protect him from any magical harm through her love.  Voldemort will find out about this and kill aunt Petunia to get to Harry.

*As a bonus, Dudley gets in the way and instantly loses 120 pounds (Jst kidding)

*Winky, the alcoholic house elf, will join her master Barty Crouch Jnr after his second escape from Azkaban and become a spy for the Death Eaters at Hogwards. Dobby, will catch her in the act and she'll end up killing him.

*Sirius will come back from inside one of the horcruxes (maybe the one ed predicted to be in 12 Grimmauld place)

    That's my pedict's for HP 7.

jeez, i didn't realize i hadn't responded to this in so long!

daily: it's a fun series. who knows, maybe you'll pick it up some time. and i'm sure that if we're all still here when book 7 hits, i'll be blogging about it. :>

GS: i didn't doubt that scrpbk was telling the truth: i just never heard it. but that's good to know. and i like your predictions: i didn't think of krum reappearing that way but i think you're right, that needs to happen.

paper: grape: holy crap! the portraits! and what about the trading cards? i never thought of that--good call!

queen: i dunno, i think that if we see dumbledore, it'll be as grape suggested but we'll all see, won't we? :>

tbs: why doesn't your mother want to read it? good points re: hagrid getting his props. the snake--o! you mean the one featured in goblet of fire? oo, very interesting!

    [trout-smacks carmachu]

mouse: hey, welcome back! interesting thoughts re: aunt petunia and winky. those are very good ideas. i'm not as sure re: sirius, but queenparanoia things so, too and it'll be interesting to see, won't it? :>

    I think Snape will die.

However I also think Snape will be revealed as a 'good guy', whether as a member of the Order or in some other way, before the end. I suspect this because Dumbledore backed Snape to the hilt, and one of the long-running themes of the series seems to have been 'Dumbledore is never wrong.'
  • mousenphonic said on Jan 08, 2007....
Col Mus: Maybe it's meant for Dumbledore to only be wrong this one time.  Trust has always been his weakness and it eventualy cost him his live....Nah, I think Snape stays the bad guy.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 08, 2007....
mouse: interesting, except that rowling doesn't appear to exploit her heroes' weaknesses to destroy them, from what i can see. ?

  • worldbeater said on Jan 09, 2007....
i too think Snape will die and Dumbledore will come back.
  • mousenphonic said on Jan 10, 2007....

silver:  True, but there is a first for every thing. How many HP fans who never trusted Snape to start with shouted "I told you so!" at the end of half blood prince. I wasn't one of them though, I actually started to like Snape, untill.....

Just would like to ask a question though: How do you guys think the story would have changed if it was Malfoy who killed Dumbledore and not Snape? And do we realy know if it was Snape who killed Dumbledore, what if he was under the Imperius Curse?

Jst a thought, guess we'll have to wait and see. Can somebody please tell me when this @#$^&#@@&~## book is due? Come on, silver, I see some people have the suspicion that your JK. Jst tell us already.

  • worldbeater said on Jan 10, 2007....

read th lines where Dumbledore is pleading with Snape, and Snape has hatred on his face. Actually, Dubledore is pleadign with him to save Harry and Snape hates Harry; that too he has to do something to Dumbledore to save Harry is like adding insult to injury. if Malfoy had a chance he would have surely killed DD. but Snape took matters in his hand and did something which he can undo later; but all this had to be done to save Haryy which he didn't like at all.

So DD will come back in the last book. bTw, Mp,the book will be out in July 2007:)

  • mousenphonic said on Jan 10, 2007....
world:  Thank you, only....6 months to go!!! WHY?!
Malfoy did have the chance to kill DD but he didn't have the guts.  I think I would like to see a battle between Malfoy and Harry...No, wait, Harry will be to busy slaying Voldemort.  Make that Malfoy vs Weasley.

With DD gone Voldemort has a free access pass to Hogwarts. While Voldemort knows the danger HP holds for him  the death eaters still think of HP as a lucky brat.  I don't think Snape wanted to kill Harry, he couldn't see him anyway under the invisibility cloak, no, that death curse was meant for Dumbledore and Dumbledore only.
  • worldbeater said on Jan 10, 2007....
Mp, isn't it soooo looong to wait for a book:( why can't JK start publishing chapters instead of the whole book? WE are ready to read it:) Hey carmachu, you should read the "Barry Trotter" series. The first one was really good:)
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 10, 2007....
col mustard: i happen to agree. :>

world: me, i disagree re: snape & dumbledore. we don't know anything about the unbreakable vow--it's possible he gave one previously to dumbledore that would somehow supercede the one he gave to narcissa malfoy. we also don't know what the penalties are for attempting to break that vow--it's possible snape truly is reformed and is willing to pay the price. but you make a very good point re: what precisely dumbledore is pleading w/ snape about, b/c i agree that he isn't pleading for his life--he's pleading for harry's, or at least, not to "go to the dark side", as it were.

mouse: had draco done it, i would think less of rowling. her villains aren't really that two-dimensional. i think we're meant to see draco as tragic--which harry begins to in half-blood prince. and i'm not sure voldemort has free access to hogwarts.

here's a thought: maybe voldemort needs (draco) malfoy in order to take on human form? i'm envisioning some kind of possession that would just put voldemort in draco's much younger and presumably healthier body?

    ed
  • worldbeater said on Jan 11, 2007....
Hey SL, good thought about VD needing Draco's body.. hmmm..
  • mousenphonic said on Jan 11, 2007....
Silver:  Oooh this is turning into a real debate, goody!

Understand the point of the DD pleading for HP's life, it makes sense now (I read that chapter again last night) As for Malfoy the tragedy, I also get it,
Oh, how stupid and naive i've been.

Yes, I agree in some way that Voldemort's gonna use Malfoy as part of his scheme

As for Voldemort's free access. DD was the only thing that kept him out in the first place according to HP 2: Chamber of Secrets and HP 5: Order of Phoenix.  But you still have to wonder though, if DD kept him from entering Hogwarts, how did he enter with Prof. Quibble in HP 1: Philosopher's Stone?  There's alot more to Voldemort and the death eaters Rowling hasn't told us before, I think all hell's gonna break lose in HP 7. Like  it hasn't already in HP 6.

  • worldbeater said on Jan 11, 2007....
Well, I have reservations about book 6. I found it the worst book of the series and I skipped pages after pages to read it.Unlike earlier books where I kept going back and reading pages after pages again and again. I hope book 7 will not be like book 6.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 11, 2007....
mouse: except when that's said of dumbledore keeping voldemort out of hogwart's, it's an opinion expressed by hermione, IIRC. therefore, it's hard to know how much weight we should give it. while hermione's usually right, remember that hogwart's has had literally centuries of very, very powerful wizards (including the four founding wizards) to improve the defenses. and presumably, quirrel got in b/c nobody'd ever made 7 horcruxes before (according to dumbledore)--the countermeasures probably couldn't count for that possibility. voldemort was breaking new ground, so perhaps it was impossible to predict and defend against it?

worldbeater: i had that reaction the first times i read books 5 and 6 but i went back to re-read 'em, just to make sure i got everything. i think you should consider going back to taking another look at 'em w/ fresh eyes.

SL, I had liked the 5th book. I'll take tyour advice and go back to read the 6th one aftre I finish the Dean Koontz book I'm reading currently. But, what we will do after the 7th book:( Maybe take up reading Barry Trotter series:) BTW, have you read this parody of HP? The first one is a must read to know what might happen if Harry lives:):) Hilarious and witty to say the least:)
  • j_potter10 said on Mar 16, 2007....
I think harry will be the last horcrux.this theory isnt well researched but it kinda srang at me...harry will allow himself to be destroyed leaving neville to defeat voldemort. So harry and voldemort will be the 2 people to die
  • j_potter10 said on Mar 16, 2007....
i also think dumbledore has always been bad...thats why he never did away with voldemort himself and thats why JK quotes 'he had a glint in his eye when voldemort returned'.also some predictions have said snape was good so he killed dumbledore because he knew he was bad
