It's the nightmare of underdeveloped country!

Just out of curiosity, how much do you spend on internet connection a month?

Over here, some things are so ridiculously over-priced beyond belief. Not that you’d get top range quality anyway. They’re still crap -- just expensive, like air tickets and internet connection.

Internet and long distance phone calls are third-world quality for a first-world price. Even phone calls in America are a lot cheaper than in Indonesia but with a much better quality.

My current internet provider is a domestic connection using wave lan antenna which can only support certain radius limit within an area. It’s using wireless wifi connection to and from the access point. I just found out that it is called RT/RW net. Jesus! What’s worse is that RT/RW means local community code number. [sighs]

But it’s the only way to go for an unlimited connection with a monthly fee that doesn’t suffocate your pocket. I pay US$ 25 monthly for this. The antenna and wires setup was 100 bucks. Now to go DSL, you get 750 MB (whatever that means) limit a month for 35 bucks or 300 bucks a month if you want to go unlimited. For some blog addict like me, I much prefer the unlimited connection where I don’t have to worry about how much mega bytes I have used up. Keep in mind that this is Indonesia, a third world country where some people still live under a dollar a day and the currency against US dollars is very low.

In Singapore -- our closest neighbor, you pay roughly US$ 40 for an unlimited DSL connection and it’s so fast and reliable. To compare the connection between Singapore and Indonesia is like comparing the earthworms and the sky.

I have to tell you though that the connection isn’t always this bad. It’s started getting bad after this humongous out-of-proportion house was built opposite my house. Then it’s started getting worst after the ISP did some changes regarding its access point, or so they say. Now it’s practically gone, like I don’t even have any internet connection at all.

Don’t even get me started on Indonesia’s long distance phone call quality and rate. Wherever you are on earth, it’s always more expensive to call Indonesia. The same goes with calling from this godforsaken archipelago to anywhere in the world. And the quality? Oh My God! Let’s not even go there. I don’t think you could ever fathom my frustration.

These things are hurting my long distance relationship, the kind of relationship that relies on internet and phone calls. Both are like basic necessities for a long distance relationship to work. But not me, can’t have that either. Oh well… just my luck anyway.

So how much do you pay for your internet connection monthly? And if you can be bothered, please tell me about the limit and speed as well so i'd have a clue.

Hi missb, actually the cheapest broadband rate over here is about US$21/month for a 512K bps ADSL unlimited broadband service.

My broadband connection of 1500K bps cost me US$27.50/month, unlimited usage.  As the broadband market is opening up & more competition comes in, rates are slash & i guess the consumers will benefit overall.

If the IDD charges are putting a strain on your long distance relationship, why don't you switch to Skype? I believe you have heard of this service right?

miss b: except isn't part of the problem the not-so-great infrastructure? or is that not true of the broadband infrastructure over there?

at home, i use narrowband and it runs around $20/month. i haven't upgraded b/c i wanna make sure my machine is secure and don't yet know enough to do that properly.

Regarding to the way of transmission and the humongous house.

The type of connection providing the internet is by Radio Transmission or Radio Waves, specifically microwave communication.

As this kind of communication, it needs a line of site.
Your antenna should be focused on the aperture of the microwave antenna of your base station.
So if a blockage in this line of site, will also block your connection.

Technically it doesn't stop there, the weather, humidity, climate, terrain, bodies of water, flock of migrating birds if the line of sight is the way they traverse, also what we call as Fresnel Zones, etc...

Its not just a line of sight but also it must have a clearance for Fresnel Zones.
The bodies of water that can reflect those radio waves, it can either be a supportive or cause the cancellation of waves on the receiver.
The rain specially when its hard, it causes refractions to the waves.
Terrain and the climate has a factor in the computation of a proper microwave link.

To tell you, those personnels who setup the antennas just rely on the line of sight and a little adjustments through their laptops (softwares for computations).

But in constructing a microwave link, is not just a line of sight. It'll need topographic map, surveying, 10 yrs development plan on the vicinity, weather logs the whole year, and many more...

Not positive missb, it's bundled in the phone bill, but
    I think it's about $20--$25 a month. DSL
  • mrhowto said on Dec 20, 2006....
My home web connection is GB £40(about US$80) per month - 10mb dsl connection.

We get it with cable tv & phone as a package though, for £109 (about $220) per month.

    Tinkerman,
Oh wow, that's even cheaper! Damnit! :) I lived in singapore twice for a couple of months and have experienced the internet connection. I'd kill for it right now :/ Oh i remember now. The wireless ADSL was the 40 bucks one? last time i got free wireless connection in my flat :) It was from the neighbor's probably. It was great. Free and fast. Don't tell anyone ;) Thanks for stopping by.

    Ed,
You're damn right! It's the underdeveloped internet infrastructure here. This place has not got the latest and advanced one :( So you pay 20 bucks a month huh. That's not bad. What's narrowband anyway? :)

    mr_right,
Thanks a lot for the info. I think that's the one. I knew the humongous house was part of the problem :/ I should really try and get them to come again. Do you think if they add the antenna it'd work better? They said it's about one meter now.

    mobil,
$20 - $25 is not too bad. You get DSL and better, it's working! I so envy you :/

    mrhowto,
    You're british? Hehe...i didn't know :) That's quite expensive huh, 40 pounds a month :/ Thanks for stopping by ;)

    Cheers y'all :)

Hi! missb, Chandigarh is one of the most important cities in North India. The AIRTEL laid its cables in our locality and offered a package for a Broadband connection permitting unlimited surfing round the clock  along with free telephone calls upto 250 pulses  for 750 Indian rupees  say US$ 17.00 but after paying the local taxes and for the excess telephone call the average monthly payment is about 900 Indian rupees or say  US$20.00.

missb, Wi-Fi mooching is illegal in S'pore and offenders can be charged under the Computer Misuse Act.  You can read here.
  • mr_right14 said on Dec 20, 2006....
You must inform the company about the problem. They have to inspect it. If that house is really humongous, and along the path to the base station, oh my... I'd like to add... If you have a bandwidth/speed of 512 Kbps, it doesn't mean you fully use the bandwidth coz' there are some noises that enters the transmission. 512Kbits but 300Kbits are just a noise signal then 212Kbits of usable information are being used including the parity bits.
  • thearmchairbitch said on Dec 20, 2006....
I'm paying S$29.90 (about US$19.30) for unlimited 512kb ADSL connection.

    narrowband = dialup. :>

  • Ormocanon said on Dec 20, 2006....
missb, I use dial-up connection, the internet card I use costs only P100.00 (roughly $2) and its good for 12 hours but I get a free internet connection from 12 o'clock midnight up to 8am for 15 days.
  • dailyachesandpains said on Dec 20, 2006....

    Hey Missb,

I have a bundle package with my provider.  I believe we pay $130 a month for broadband, VOiP phone (don't pay domestic long distance) and digital cable TV with NO extra channels (but we get around 200 channels that we don't even use).

I'm sorry you have to go through this.  I had no internet connection on Monday and I was lost for a little while.  I couldn't imagine what you're going through!

Ed...still on dial up?  I never would have thought that you would be on dial up ;-)

    Ed,

I'm the one that sits on the throne of paranoia, are you my king?!!!  We got a router, a firewall, anonymous web browser, a security lock down where you have to enter in 3 different passwords before you're able to connect, and cyber scrub to eat up everything after we are on the web.  I'm sure it can all be cracked, but it keeps my mind at bay...a little.

  • bloc said on Dec 20, 2006....
about $45/month (the highest speed cable I can get)

    @sw
you dont' want to upgrade to broadband until you know more about security? Basically, if you put a NAT router between your computer and your comp you'll be safer than you are now. They are cheap too.
  • CreativeWoman said on Dec 20, 2006....
I pay $100 for six months pre-paid service.  I have a dial-up connection because it's cheaper than if I went to sattelite which is double that.  I live in a rural area.

Yeah, am british...for some unexplainable reason, everything seems to have gone sky-high in price over here lately - it's madness.  Everything, except for my wages :P

BTW : To answer your answer your query, DSL - missb; we are suppose to pay 40 Euros for  unlimited use...the thing is they have been sending us bills 3 times the amount of what was agreed on the contract for the last two months.

I have reported this, and they say it is just a glitch.  Hopefully they will remedy this because hubby is sooooo not amused.

Hope to hear from you soon sweetheart!

Hi guys... sorry for the late reply and thanks for commenting :)

    Peedee,
Thanks for stopping by. So, how's the internet over there? Is it fast and reliable?

    Tinkerman,
I think i was aware that it was probably illegal in singapore, as most "bad" things are :) For that i am sorry if i have offended you by mooching the wi-fi. In my defense, i did not do anything deliberately to "mooch" it. My laptop was just sitting there and all of a sudden my wireless connection caught it. I dare say most people would just use it anyway. I wouldn't if i had had my own connection. It's not that i wouldn't pay for it, it's just because i can't. My stay was temporary so subscribing to any provider would have been out of the question.

    mr_right14,
Thanks again for the info. You've been helpful. I'd informed them and they finally did something about it. My connection's been better now. It has its highs and lows, but i can settle for that :)

    thearmchairbitch,
Thanks for stopping by. I take it that you're singaporean as well? I'd kill for your internet connection :)

    Ed,
Ahh... so it's dial-up. Thanks for explaining ;)

    Ormocanon,
Thanks for stopping by. It's cool that you get free connection. Is your phone bill expensive?

    Daily,
Hi dear...thanks for stopping by, and happy new year!! :) Your bundle package sounds reasonable enough, or is it? Anyway, i'm glad you understand what i'd gone through with the internet. It was horrible, i tell ya :)

    Bloc,
Thanks for stopping by. $45 sounds fair enough for the fastest connection.

    CW,
Thanks for stopping by :) So it's $100 for 6 months? Not bad. Is it fast enough?

    SL,
Hey there, happy new year, dear :) Is $49 for dial up or broadband? It is quite dear, isn't it? :/

    mrhowto,
Cool :) I can totally relate with what you mean. Over here, third-country it may be, but prices keep going up but never the income :/

    Paper,
Thanks hon. Merry christmas and happy new year to you too, dear [hugz]
40 euros for unlimited connection sounds reasonable. I believe it is fast and reliable, unlike here anyway :) So how's the bill? Have they fixed it yet? I hope they have. Anyway, thanks again [smooch]

    Cheers y'all ;)
