Why do Muslims can't touch wet dogs? Why, why, why?? I've been wandering this for years and I've even asked my Muslim friends and nobody could give me a direct answer. Are there any Muslims here who could tell me why Muslims can't touch wet dogs? I believe that even some of them interpreted it to be that Muslims just can't touch dogs. As a result, I've seen some dog-abusive behaviour among certain groups of 'people'. I need an explanation...

    Hey bluesnake,

From what I know, dogs are "haram" (dirty) to muslims, just like it's "haram" for them to eat pork. What do you mean by wet dogs though? I've never heard of it. I know that the most haram parts are being licked by a dog or touched its nose (it's sort of wet)

That's why most muslims don't have dogs. As for why they think dogs are haram, only God knows :/

    Cheers :)

Strange, different people (Muslim friends) tell me different things. One said that a Muslim cant touch wet dogs only... The others said a Muslim just cant touch dogs generally. Thanks, MissB for confirming this. My understanding of 'haram' is dirty, am I right? Now back to the question...why are dogs 'haram'? That's the question I've been wondering for years... Is there anything in the Quran that explains it? Isn't it is contradicting that it's God who create all ANIMALS on earth. So, why does God then say that dogs are 'haram'. Why? I'm so curious...

wow this is new to me. really they cant touch wet dogs?
  • Bluesnake said on Dec 05, 2006....
Yup! But MissB has confirmed it is dog generally, whether it's dry or wet.

    Bluesnake,

I haven't read the whole koran, so i'm not sure if there's a scripture about it. All i know is that dogs are considered dirty and unclean animals, unlike cats (cats clean and groom themselves and bury their feces).

I'm not a muslim myself and from my muslims friends they just said dogs are dirty creatures. That's all. I think that's just stupid. Dogs are so cute and they're not as dirty. Some say that dogs stink if you don't wash them. Hell, humans stink too if they don't freaking wash :/

    Cheers :)

Touching dogs is not haram as far as i know. If they lick ur clothes they become dirty, where as if a cat licks u...u don`t become dirty WHY??....well the answer is quite simple.....scientific research now has showed tht canine saliva contains alot of bacteria where as feline saliva contains a sort of anti-septic.....dogs lick themselves all the time just like cats do (although cats do it a bit often) since Dog`s saliva contains bacteria and is thus "dirty" muslims are advised to stay away from it....this rule doesnt apple to cats for their saliva is not "dirty"........whts interesting is tht such commandments to the blvrs were made by the last Prophet of God, Muhammad peace be upon him 1400 years b4 there was any research as to wht constitutes canine saliva....its amazing how he could have known in a totally unsceintific society tht Dog`s saliva is bad for human hygiene.....

According to Malik school, a dog is not impure. You can touch the dog, and the dog can touch you. There is no impurity in the dog or touching it.
  • anonymous said on Aug 20, 2007....
okay to make this clear to everyone so theres are no more questions, ill set everything straight for good! Muslims are not aloud to touch dogs in general(wet dogs, clea dogs, etc.) because in our Qur'an (Islamic bible) a dog is known to be im pure(not pure i mean) but if u are going to touch a dog it is known in our religion that when u touch or forced to touch it, you have to wash your hands with soap 7 times. that is basic as i can get :)
  • anonymous said on Aug 20, 2007....
okay and cats we can keep because they are known to be pure. because our last prophets Muhammad(p.b.u.h.) owned a cat, which alows us to have cats. it is like that because allah our god's favourtie human was our last prophet. and that is a fact. but if theres more that i need to add u guys can add it for me :)

AN-EXTREMIST, Actually you are complety backwards on the whole dog and cat bacteria thing. Dogs have something in their saliva which kills bacteria, whereas a cat's toungue and saliva do not. Although a cat appears to be clean because of its sandpapery toungue and its constant licking itself, it actually has alot of bacteria which can be very harmful. I have seen this first hand. I have both a cat and a dog. My cat has gotten a wound on her and then would not stop licking it. As a result, it became very infected with bacteria. We had to take her to the vet and get medicine. My dog, however, has recieved wounds many times from other dogs and things and they have never become infected as a result of her licking them. It almost as though it is an anti-bacterial thing. There was also a scientific experiment conducted on the show "Mythbusters" that I saw, where they had one of the human hosts of the show lick a bacteria dish, and then they had a dog lick one. Gues what? The human bacteria dish had tons of bacteria in it, whereas the dog's dish was almost bacteria free. So, basically it is much more clean and safe for you to be kissed by your dog than by any human, scientifically that is.

hey man, I am a muslim. It's not haram to touch dogs, and there is nothing wrong with touching dogs or even playing with them. The only thing that islam DOESN"T RECOMMEND is owning a dog in the house, because the angles won't come in a house which has a dog. But notice I said not recommended. Because Haram is a big word and u can only use it when u r 100% sure of what u r saying. Owning a dog for protection is not haram or not recommended, it is totally fine. The only thing u gotta do if u touch a dog is make woddu, because a dog is considered dirty, so if u touch a dog, u just go to go wash ur hands and purify ur self by making woddu. And about the wet dog thing, never heard of that before, some people just make up staff like that, always as any person that tell's anything u didn't hear before, what is there proof?? Because a great scholar used to say "proof is part of religion, And if it wasn't for proof, said who ever want's, what they want". And I pray that u become a Muslim and see how great islam is, and how purified you will feel. May Allah lead u to right way. Peace.

hey everyone...my name is...who cares??...the only thing here you care about or wanna know about is why can't Muslims touch dogs right??.. well heres the only answer i know that i asked a muslim person a while back and the answer they gave me goes something like this if i remember it right...because once our prophet Muhammad saw hid something from enemy's behind a sheep and when they (the enemies) got there and a dog was present and he start barking towered the sheep and the enemies went and looked and they found it and from that day on he made it official that no Muslim's must touch or have any kind of dog...it doesn't have to be wet,dry,naked,big,small,gay...lol...now that was a joke but yea thats the way i heard it a while back like 3 years ago so i might be saying it wrong in some part but it was definitely about the sheep and the dog.now....there might be alot of ?'s but don't ask me anything cuz i don't want to be the one people stand responsible this is what i heard a while back as of for your own selfs there are always malas aka like Muslim preachers..so u could ask them im sure they can give you a much bater answer then i could...what all it takes is a little bit of time and not laziness to go and ask...so um there..please no bad comment that was just what i was told....and remember you might say that if god didn't want us to touch dogs why would he create them in the first place right??..well he created humans too and look at us...he created everything because everything was created to do certain things....for example...lions,tigers,cats,insects,birds and etc:but we can't eat some these things...HAGD:)

Me said : WELL SAID! :)  Well, one of my friends informed me that:

the reason is simple as because dog and pig are considered not clean in Islam. That's why we are not supposed to touch them. Hmm why dog is considered not clean I have no idea. Maybe because like pig they eat anything they find or stay in unclean place or procreate in front of everybody.

Here's the story he told me:

There was once this characterless woman that was shunned by the society.

one day she was walking and people around her was teasing and making fun of her. Some kid was throwing stone at her.

while she was walking she saw a dog that was almost dying of thirst near a well. Nobody borther to help the dog out as he was unclean and such

she then took some water out of the well and fed the dog.

when she later died she went straight to heaven.

then she asked God why she was send to heaven as she never did any good in her life

God then replied it is because u feed the dog that day that's why.

The moral of the story is respect everybody including animals equally. Even though dog is considered unclean in Islam that does not mean u should shun it. U should help it out when it is in distress.

Dogs in the Quran ?? Are'nt they dirty (Najis) ?!!!!!

I heard this from a Muslim friend. So I told him to read the Quran and find what Quran says about dogs.

It is interesting to know that dogs are mentioned in the Quran 5 times, not just once, 7:176, 18:18, 18:22 (three times). NO WHERE does God call the dogs dirty animals or give any indication that they should be avoided or treated the way many Muslims think they should. Actually the story of the people of the cave, in Sura 18, gives the indication. that we should appreciate.

The people of the cave, 3, 5 or 7 were mentioned in the Quran and every time God insists on letting us know that their dog was there with them. Their story can be as complete without the mention of the dog, but God did, Why ?

God is telling us these righteous people were in the cave with their dog, if it is not righteous to have dogs, God would not have told us that story in which the dog has to be remembered as being there. We have to know the quality of God, if we were to worship Him correctly. When God says something He means it, and when he does not, he means it as much. If God did not curse the dog and call it all kinds of name, it is because God wants us to know that He created that beautiful creature and He expected us to make all use and companinonship with that animal that accompanied these righteous people of the cave.

Fabricated hadiths contradict the Quran. Many of them narrated by Abu Hurayra. Abu Hurayra, whose name is translated as , father of the little cat, hated dogs and women and from his mouth came many hadiths that insulted women and cursed the dogs and make them undesirable animals that need to be avoided and in other hadiths killed.

    These fabricted hadtihs were falsely attributed to the prophet Muhammed who cannot utter but the teachings of the Quran and would only be a living example of the Quran itself. The prophet Muhammed who lived by the Quran could not have done anything but agree with the Quran,not contradict it. God gave us a great criteria to judge His truth form the man-made fabrications;

Ok, Ok.. Let me explain this.. Amongst the Muslim sects, there are many understandings on this matter.. There are many examples in the Quran and Hadiths on why dogs are considered as impure. Please note, I state here as "impure", not "haram" as some of the others had commented. Historically, I'm sure you've heard of Noah and Noah's Ark right? You've heard of how he collects all animals in pair to board his ship so that after the flood, all the animals can reproduce themselves again. In other words, repopulate the world? I will not go into details on how anyone or any animal can actually "repopulate" this big big world. Yet this happen at Noah's time. They do not know the world is round. They probably do not know where's China or India or America and such. All those names haven't exist yet. The only thing Noah knew then was that Allah s.w.t. told him to build a ship and take all animals in pairs on board his ship and he did. So, when the flood came and everyone is safe in the ship (people and animal), Allah s.w.t. had summoned that none are allowed to have any carnal relations on the ship (again, for both people and animal).. Ok, maybe you're wondering, animals have no brains. The only thing they know is hump each other based on your observations today. Alright, you're right. But this is your observation today. What we're talking about now is years and years and years ago in Noah's time. If Noah can get a revelation from Allah s.w.t. to build a giant ship because a huge flood is coming, then you can at least imagine how smart and obedient the animals are at the time too right? Alright, back to the time in the ship... Allah s.w.t. had summoned to all not to have any carnal relations on board the ship until the ship has docked somewhere, at land, then by all means, everybody can go have their carnal pleasure whenever they please (ok, I don't mean Allah s.w.t. summoned them in the exact sentence but this is just a way of me putting it). But of all the pairs of animals on board, the dogs did not take heed. They went and hump each other, in front of all the other animals, with no shame. All the other animals are even ashamed to look at what's going on. So because they have refused to obey, they are condemned, and Muslims are not allowed to touch them because what they did are considered as dirty. This is because, for a Muslim, all carnal processes should be done in order and ettiquette. But, dogs are not considered as "haram" at all. However, their saliva and faeces ARE considered as "haram". Which is why, when come into contact with a Muslim, the Muslim will have to wash the place of contact with clean soil (and not just any type of soil, but the brown soil, that has not been contaminated by other faeces of other animals) ONE time, with pure water (which in this case, just tap water) SEVEN times and make sure that the place of contact has no smell, taste or color of whatever that has been in contact (the smell, taste and color will probably apply to the faeces only). So, most people who DEFINITELY do not want to taste the place that was in contact would repeat the process a few times more before finally taking the wudhu. So lately, most people just easily say that a dog is "haram" which in this case, the animal itself is not. Only the saliva and faeces is, if it does come in contact with a Muslim. Most people just label it as such so that we'd just stay away from the dogs because if we did come in contact with the saliva and faeces, it takes a lot of work to clean it up so that we would be clean to make our prayers and for the prayers to be accepted by Allah s.w.t. Okie dokie.. Any questions??

To say anything is Halaal or Haraam you have to find it from Qur'an and Sunnah. If not please do not say it's Haraam or Halaal. Make sure you know what you are talking about. Islam is not about this imam said this and that imam said that. Last and final prophet did not come for that. Dogs are very useful animal for some people such as blind people, hunters, cops....God created every living things for some purpose. Some animals are haraam to eat some are haraam to touch some are haraam to keep in the house, all for your good. But what is haraam and halaal is clear. Now when it's come to dogs i have not come across any qur'an verse or strong hadith that support the claims. Okay when its come to having a dog as a pet i would stay away from it, thats if you are muslim unless if you really need it as help. reason, dogs are territorial animal do you know how they mark the territories? by pissing in places, well have them in your house and it will piss in different places in your house. if you see a dog in need of help as a muslim and as a human you must help. if you could help and if you dont help that dog, you will be questioned in the day of judgement for sure. treat every creatures (yes including pigs) in this world as you would be treated .

You need to be friends with stronger muslims, its quite easy to explain why muslims shouldn't touch dogs, muslims should always be (pak) clean at all times and whenever touched or rather licked by a dog, you cannot go into the mosque to pray without taking a bath n then performing what is called (wudhou), that is before you pray in the mosque or read the qur'aan. this does not come from me, it is written in the qur'aan
  • dayaasir@yahoo.com.sg said on Apr 22, 2009....

No i don't need to be judged! machemane fyi you need to understand the questions correct. first of all you just can't touch any dogs? or only wet dogs? now you are answering just as any dogs and licked. We are not talking about dog licking us or we are licking the dog. and can you support evidence from Qur'an or Sunnah? i am not here to take your pakistani arab cultural bullshit. also learn to read a persons comment before you post your opinion. don't be a knuckle bucket.

what i can find is in The bible it was a jewish custom also book of leviticus clearly says it. but hey we need islamic scriptural evidence

I am a Muslim and whenever people ask me why dogs are considered as Haraam, I honestly do not know how to answer. What I know is that it is not advisable for Muslims to keep dogs at home as the angels wont come into the house. However, if it is for the sole purpose of protecting the house, it is allowed. Furthermore, I have also heard that we cant touch wet dogs. However, there is a way to cleanse ourselves should we are to touch wet dogs, whether purposely or accidentally. The act of cleansing is called Samak/Taharah, of which one has to clean their hands/parts of body which has been in contact with dogs (or pigs) for 7 times. The first rinse with soil and water and the rest (6 times) with just water. Samak is a way to clean filth categorized as Mughallazah. I myself touch dogs. I think of dogs as adorable creatures. Personally, I dont think Muslims should make a big fuss about it. Islam is a simple way of living. There is always a solution for everything. So what if I touch dogs, right? I can always clean myself again. God is fair for teaching us to do all this things. In fact, eventhough dogs are considered as Haraam in Islam, if we were to see a dog suffering or in need of help, it is ADVISABLE that we help these creatures. After all, they have a life to live too. So yeah, that's my answer and that's how I feel. p/s : My bestfriend has a cute dog which he calls his daughter and I'm the proud god-mother to her.. ;p

It's not that dogs are Haraam. In Islam their has to be clear proof from the Qur'an, and Hadith that say something is Haraam. Such as backbiting, adultery, fornication, lying, etc. While the keeping of dogs as pets are makruh (disliked). I personally as a Muslim am not a dog fan, but there is no legitimate fatwa from a scholar that says the keeping of a dog is Haraam. For Muslims it's best if they have dogs to keep them in kennels outside during warm weather ( in order to keep the home clean for Salaat.), and during cold weather in a spare room, if available. The main reason for this is that even house trained pets, at times have accidents. The urine of any animal corrupts the wudu (ablution) of the one praying, so to seperate the animal from that area as much as possible is recommended.. I hope I have given a better and consise answer to your question. p.s, any other questions about this subject, or anyother relating to Islam can be directed to me at my email; ahmadj11@hotmail.com Masalaam, Imam Ahmed Muhmmed
