Finding the ideal gift for a teen age boy is much like going on a quest in search of the Holy Grail. You know it is out there, but it is elusive to obtain.

Boys experience a wide range of interests and hobbies during the teen years, making it difficult to navigate the whole gift giving situation.

Giving the gift of a Visa cash card, is as good as giving cash, but much less likely to be squandered frivolously. It also gives them a sense of accountability, causing the receiver to really evaluate the purchase. Another gift ideas are an IPod gift card, favorite restaurants or fast food gift cards, passes to the movies, gift cards to the local video rental store for videos or video games, or if your teen is driving, a gas card is always a welcome gift.

If giving cash is not your idea of a personalized enough gift there are a few other ideas. If your teen is into skiing or snowboarding, a season pass to the favorite ski area is a wonderful gift. Every time they go to the mountain, they will remember you and your generosity. Paintball guns and air guns are also very popular with boys in this age range. If your teen has a known hobby, tools, instruments,or equipment supporting his endeavors are appreciated.

Being as this is the age of electronic doodads, video game systems, and gadgets of all kinds, they are always a good choice.  There are games, accessories, adapters, components of all sorts that would make the electronic experience more complete for your Mr. Gadget type of kid.

Sometimes, you may not know the boys hobbies, or he is in a in between stage, and you would like to give a gift instead of cash or gift cards. A good calculator is a good idea, he will need it to get through school. He may not seem overly enthused at the moment, but the first A that comes home on a test because he had his trusty calculator will convince him that this gift is a true winner. A nice piece of jewelry such as a wrist watch or necklace are appreciated as well as a nice weekend bag, or a backpack for school.

It's even hard to buy them video games -- who knows which ones they want or which they already have?  I like your idea of gift cards....sooooo much better; especially for teenagers.  I really liked the idea of the movies or restaurants...my 16 yr old daughter is always going to the movies and out for a bite to eat, so these would be great gifts for girls too!
