My roommate and I have discussed this.
And before anyone goes off half-cocked, I'm not a drug user.
I've heard about how illegal substances are "cut" with chemicals (Raid bug spray, for instance) to give diluted drugs more "kick".
But let's consider something for a moment. The Federal government regulates the drugs, right? They develop guidelines as to what makes a dosage, they exercise purity control...
If we put the controlled substances in the hands of the FDA and let them come up with the same guidelines they use for OTC medicines... Well, I get ahead of myself.
Firstly, if we quit this nonsense about the "war on drugs" and let the FDA do its thing, we could *finally* tax the sale of these substances. Let's face it, the Feds *love* sin taxes. They're losing out on a gold mine!
Secondly, Federal regulation would require purity, standardized dosages, your standard warning labels, and those wonderfully hygenic packages.
And even if the Feds did do this, employers can still do random drug screenings. And jobs where you have to be "grounded" can still refuse to hire these people. Fewer cops would be getting shot at during raids, because there would be fewer raids.
And yes, you'd be right in pointing out that this idea is flawed. There's always going to be some dang fool that ODs, or doesn't follow the package's instructions, or drives (or works) under the influence... There's no cure for stupid.
