When I was in grade school and high school, I was always joining quiz contests and art competitions, and guess what, I always manage to bag an award. {to please somebody...}
How did I know that I had a knack for the arts?
The start of it all...
At present, there are lots of kids' shows that concerns the arts such as Art Angel, Art Attack, and I don't remember what the others were called. But during my childhood, there was this show hosted by a bearded man who always carry a palette and a canvas. Out of curiosity, I emulated what he was doing. Fortunately for me, my dad has a stash of water colors. He was also a bit of an artist. So when my dad found out that I had a bit of talent with colors, he bought me stacks and stacks of tubed watercolors complete with palettes and paintbrushes. Since canvasses are a bit expensive and over the top for a five year old kid, I was happy painting on cartolinas and even manila papers, we have a grocery store which also has school supplies. Heeheheh, so I got umlimited supplies of materials.
HECTIC... SCHMECTIC
During that time, I started experimenting not only with water colors, but also with crayons, dyes, and pastels. But it was put on hold when I got so busy for reviewing with my acceleration tests and quiz bees. Oh yeah, and tons of conferences I had to attend. I remember when I was excused for my class for almost a month because I had a division quiz bee to compete in... as if wasn't too hectic, I was also invited to a conference the following week in Malacanang, counterpart of the White House here in the Philippines. I think the conference was called the "First Filipino Children's Forum", and I was the youngest in our delegation {I was 12 back then}. So the following week after I got back, I also had to attend a press conference and join an editorial writing competition. Hmm.... talk about meltdown...
So anyway, after all those brain damaging contests heheheh... I was invited by my teacher to join a poster making contest and turn in my drawing. {I think it was the nationals for a petroleum company}.. So anyway, I didn't win but it was enough for me that I got there. {I got teased a lot by my friends calling me Promil Kid and stuff... hehehe}
LUNCH ANYONE....
One of my unforgettable poster making experience was when I was invited in this art competition in our parish where it took me 10 hours to draw this poster, and mind you, I was getting pretty dizzy and dirty! :D, and only ate crackers... my goodness, freaking CRACKERS?!!? Hmm... it was on a Saturday, thank goodness... the results weren't release that day....
So the next day, I was so exhausted that I slept the whole day. Guess what, I won third place! My neighbor told me because it was announced in the church... Yey! :D Hmm....
WHO STOLE MY PASTELS?
Talk about sabotage! There was one time, in the mural {imagine an illustration board as wide as a wall being painted by me...} contest that I lost my coloring materials.... grr.... and I trained so hard with those things! Well, thankfully, I have a set of crayons. Crayons? They aren't competition material, but heck I can manage right! So I drew and drew, until my arms were aching, because crayons doesn't stick to illustration boards that easy... damn!. Anyone, guess again, I won! {I hope I'm not sounding too cocky,,, hehehe}I never found out who stole my pastels! grr.... up to this day! curses! and to think those pastels were top of the line!
HEY that's my sketch!
There was also this time that I was bored in community service class in UP that I started to sketch my professor. Thankfully, only my classmates saw my sketch and not the professor in question hehehe. There was this one classmate of mine that requested that I make a sketch for her. So I did....
A year later, I found out that this certain classmate was a cousin of Jay {I guy that I cheated with Ching, I met Jay through the net}. Hmmm... he told me that his cousin still has my sketch and told him that I was a great girl! Yeah right {with sarcasm} .
At Present....
Right now, I am a software developer, but often I am also asked to create icons and design web sites. Instead of a canvas, I create it with Flash and Photoshop. I guess my talent came in handy with my career! :D
I have no regrets that I spent my early years in competitions...I guess I learned a lot from it... and the most important thing that I learned is that one should be happy in whatever he or she does because winning is just a bonus when it comes to those things.
Cheers!
