Flowers say a lot more than we think. Their existence is not aimless, and these dainty creations are not merely objects of aesthetics.

More often than not, flowers convey the feelings that cannot be expressed by mere words. Expressions of admiration, love, devotion, remorse or affection could be said through flowers. Even a seemingly cold ward in a hospital could be warmed by flowers.

Various flowers are also used in special occassions such as weddings, birthdays or anniversaries.  Even in death, wreaths are being given to the bereaved family as an expression of sympathy. Garlands are offered to express goodwill. An ordinary setting becomes extraordinary when flowers are placed.

Of course, receivers feel ethereal bliss, a wonderful feeling that could not be explained.

What is your favorite flower???

White roses are my favorite -- it means purity, virtue, humility and charm.

Hi brown, may I ask why three, and why, of all the colors, you prefer red?

By the way, according to www.about.com, red roses means "i love you" =)

I guess tulips are for me, especially since giving the wrong rose color to someone can generate the wrong idea if one forgets.

Yes, definitely tulips; and there's even a great joke about its importance by British humorist Alan Coren:

"Apart from cheese and tulips, the only other main product of Holland is advocaat, a drink made from lawyers."
  • secretlife said on Nov 22, 2006....
I like tulips too!  yellow ones and pink ones......and i love sunflowers!

Oooooh Bronx and Secret beat me to it Lioness!  Shall I say threelips *LOL*

    Sorry, I´m so corny.  ;  )

I wanted to comment hours ago, got sidetracked with Google.

AND funny thing, I was thinking about the same theme yesterday =  ) .

I don´t know if I´m working too much in front of the comp or hurrying from one place to another but yesterday the colours of autumn just blasted before my eyes while taking a walk.

Suddenly,  I had a flash of memories from Amsterdam.  I was there more  than a couple of years ago and went to a market, which sold only flowers- a variety of fresh flowers, seedlings, bulbs etc.

Even before I went to Holland, tulips has been my favorite flower, so it was a pleasure to have seen this market.

And again, just like Secret - Sunflowers, to see a field full of them, amazing. = )

Note: Information on the meanings of flowers were taken from:
    www.aboutflowers.com
    www.craftassoc.com
    www. iflorist.com
    www.vangelis.com.au

grist: Lilies, in general, means majesty. But if you have specific preferences, it also has a different meaning.

Ed: this flower was named  bird of paradise b/c the spectacular shape of the flower resembles a bird's beak and head plumage. It belongs to the banana family. Unfortunately, I cannot find it's meaning!

  • Lioness said on Nov 22, 2006....
Bronx: you are right, different colors have different meanings. Ahh, superb choice! the general meaning of Tulips means Love.

SL: Yellow tulips means hopelessly in love; pink means caring. Appropriate for you =) Sunflower means adoration. Perfect match!

Cookie: LOL. Threelips?! I know you can make a better post than this.. =) Since you prefer the same flowers as secret, please read the info above! By the way, tulips is the symbol of the perfect lover.

    Thanks for dropping by guys!!!

Roses are beautiful.  Especially pink or yellow roses.

But I love carnations.  The lowly little carnation.  Their scent is wonderful, and in a vase, they last quite a long time.
  • dazed_and_confused said on Nov 22, 2006....
i love yellow roses because they signify friendship! :D I am  a very friendly person! :D

Oh yeah, and I love orchids too! :D We have orchids and birds of paradise in our farm! Too bad I haven't visited there for months!
  • gingersoul said on Nov 22, 2006....
My favorite flowers are African Lilies and roses, of any color. I like jasmin too because of its great smell. And bouganvillea, i like her violet color.
  • Lioness said on Nov 22, 2006....
MissMimi: Pink roses means grace, gentility, love, perfect happiness, you are so lovely; yellow ones means joy, gladness, remember me...

dazed_and_confused: Right, yellow roses signifies friendship. But accordingly, aside from those mentioned to MissMimi, it also symbolizes jealousy and infidelity (eww). Orchids! nice choice, it means rare beauty. hmm...

Gingersoul: grist mentioned lilies too, simple flowers but really adorable. Roses generally means i love you. Jasmin (hmmm...great scent), depends on the color: white means amiability and cheerfulness; red means folly and glee; yellow means timidity and modesty. Sorry, bouganvillea is not included in those given meanings.

    Great choices ladies!! Gracias!
  • Lioness said on Nov 22, 2006....
Upps.. sorry MissMimi, I  missed your favorite one: carnations, it means distinction and fascination.

Dazed: birds of paradise are definitely unique. They have no scents.  Yellow roses also means love, beauty, refinement.
  • missb said on Nov 22, 2006....
I like tulips and sunflowers too like SL :) But i basically like any flowers, really. They're just soooo beautiful, aren't they?

    Cheers ;)

I love the Japanese bearded iris more than any other flower, though I'll admit that a rose with those sunset hues and a beautiful fragrance can also make me smile.

Also, wild honeysuckle blossoms are gorgeous in their own right.
  • MissMimi said on Nov 22, 2006....
Infernal, irises are beautiful.  Is the Japanese Iris that wonderful deep purple?  A neighbor used to have a flower bed that was made up of deep purple irises and bright yellow daffodils.  Absolutely gorgeous.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Nov 22, 2006....
You got it, Mimi! :) They're just so...uniquely shaped, bold and feminine at the same time. I think there's some part of me that identifies with them a bit, and I love that deep, dark purple fading into gentle lavender and then perhaps a startling yellow center.

    A poet's living dream! :)
  • Lioness said on Nov 22, 2006....
missb: Tulips and Sunflowers are definitely a favorite! I agree, flowers regardless of type, color, odor or form, are simply beautiful. It is pleasing to the sight, and yes, it makes us smile.

the_infernal_optimist: Hmmm, unique choices, but definitely meaningful. Iris generally means inspiration and warm affection; honeysuckles means devoted affection and generosity.

Thanks for dropping by, too bad we only have to discuss it here, I wish I could deliver these flowers to you for a change =)

I have always liked violets. The standard and African. What makes them especially important to me is that my husband gave me one the first time we made love. I have it pressed in wax paper between pages of a Bible.
  • Lioness said on Nov 23, 2006....
Hi Jade, I'm taking this opportunity to welcome you back, glad to read your posts again. Your husband must really know its symbolic meaning, because violets mean modesty, affection and faithfulness. Really evocative, isn't it.

    Thanks for dropping by!
  • JadeLondon said on Nov 23, 2006....
Thank you for such a warm welcome. You know, I kept thinking about what you said in comment to one of my posts--how it was cowardly to leave. That stuck in my mind for the entire month I was away. For why should I allow anyone the satisfaction of taking away what I loved?

Anyway, I cannot say that my husband would necessarily place stock in the meaning of flowers. But he is loyal to a fault.

This was quite the interesting post. Thanks for expanding my mind. I am always looking to learn something new.

  • silverwhisper said on Nov 23, 2006....
leave it to me to find a flower that has no meaning...  :>

jade: he's loyal to a fault?

    ed
  • JadeLondon said on Nov 23, 2006....
Silver: Yes, to a fault. He puffs up like a blow fish when someone upsets me--will feel more offense than even I will feel at the given situation. As twisted as it seems, I cannot help but feel that is a form of loyalty.
  • Lioness said on Nov 23, 2006....
Jade: I honestly had to go back to your post where I made that comment, and it's good you decided to stay. Good decision. Wow, talk about being lucky. Loyalty is one value that is hard to uphold nowadays. Ed can't even believe it!

Ed: I think I'll leave it to you to give that flower a meaning.. It must be meaningful for you. But I am sure it's all but loyalty :D

What you had to say are really important to me, my gratitude!!!
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 24, 2006....
jade: maybe it's a form of love?  :>

lioness: honestly, i figured it was all about the flower being pretty, but hey, i like that, too!  :>

Hi, Lioness. Got this for you, with regard to the naming of bird of paradise:

plant with flowers like bird’s head: a South African or South American plant that has flowers containing erect orange-and-blue petals resembling a bird’s head and crest in shape.
    Genus: Strelitzia
