Who's reading the_infernal_optimist (208):
I went to my first real appointment for this pregnancy today (at roughly 14 weeks).

It started out seven shades of sucky, with an overzealous lab tech who cheerfully took seven vials of blood (I was dizzy after five, even though I ate breakfast and everything).

Blood pressure was great, as always - being pregnant actually bumps me up into the realm of normal numbers, at 106/70.

Weight check (3lbs. so far - pretty good, I think), exam, etc.

I asked the doctor, half-expecting a big no, "Are you going to try to find the heartbeat?" because it should be possible at this point, but I didn't know if they would do that at my first appointment here.

She looked at me like I had two heads and said, "Of course, honey*! That's the best part!" Then she got out the gel and the doppler, and I forgot all my discomfort.

It took her a while, long enough that I was beginning to be concerned (it was probably less than a minute, in retrospect, but consider that I hadn't had any definitive proof that the pregnancy was even viable up to that point)...and then, slightly to one side of my navel, thudthudthudthudthud in that impossibly fast cadence. We both grinned, and I felt tears welling up (I held them until later so she wouldn't see what a goofball I am).

Sprout is alive and well. :)

My next appointment is December 18th, which is also the third anniversary of my miscarriage. I'm hoping to stamp a positive impression on that day this year. They should schedule my big ultrasound during that appointment, so late Dec./early Jan. sometime. I'm excited!

* I almost always get called "honey" or "sugar" by medical staff. I know it's partly the area of the country I live in, but does this happen to everyone?

Ooooh I'm so happy for you!

I remember going along with a friend to her first ultrasound, she had no-one else to go as her parents had disowned her for falling pregnant and the father had skedaddled and I remember that incredible moment of hearing the heartbeat and seeing that new life wriggling on the screen. We both cried.

I wonder what has become of that babe for he was adopted a few days after his birth. He'd be 19 now.

you know, i think that medical staff expect pregnant women to be just a little goofy, infernal.  i say you shouldn't worry next time.  :>

CONGRATULATIONS!  I don't think I would've been able to hold back, in your shoes. :D

Ohhh I'm so excited for you!

I've never been called "honey" by a medical person that I can remember, but I did have one doctor think I was pregnant once when I was about 15 (that's a big boost for the ol' body image! lol)

I'd guess you're just too cute for your own good!

Ooooooooo that's so exciting!!!  I would have let the tears go..lol i'm sure they see it all the time!

Yes, i'm 46 and i still get called honey and dear in the doctor's office.  i think they're just trying to be nice to us!!!

I'm so happy little sprout is in there beating away.

    yep, dear or sweetie.

Infernal, that just made my day!  It's so neat to hear that.  Boy oh boy, I loved being pregnant.  I'd do it again in a minute.

I would have just as eager to hear that swishing beat. I always go through the dilemma of wondering whether the baby is viable until I see or hear it.

And honestly, I don't think you should feel the need to hold back tears. We all tend to get a little loopy when prego. I think it is a given. Besides, this is a BABY we are talking about. And I don't care how many times it is done and by whom--pregnancy is a wonderous thing.

And I tend to call people 'hon' all the time. A bit is my Southern upbringing--and I like to be nice.

so is sprout the babies name?
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Nov 22, 2006....
Thanks, everybody! I've been grinning like an idiot all day today.

Gayla - on my mommy board, there are several pregnant women. One's baby-to-be is nicknamed "bean," another is "smalls," a third is "biscuit," and mine just happens to be "sprout." We'll come up with a real name once we know the gender (and pretty quickly) so we can call him/her by name. :) In the meantime, "sprout" seems better than "it."

How exciting!  I wish you a healthy pregnancy.

I'd let everyone see the tears, expressing feelings and thoughts come in many forms.  How sweet it must be.

    missb: 3rd pregnancy, hopefully 2nd child. ;-)

daily: Oh heck yeah, we're finding out! I'm not that patient! :-D For a girl, I really like the name April Olivia or April Michelle...boy names are harder for us to agree on.
  • dailyachesandpains said on Nov 23, 2006....
I couldn't find a girls name for 5 months for our daughter!!!  We had all boy names picked out.  Tate, Tyler, Logan.  Harrison (I loved and still blame it on the hormones) but she really would have been Gavin!!!  We like off the wall names, I know, lol!
  • GalyaMarchioness said on Nov 25, 2006....

An ultrasound system must do two things—be able to deliver advanced performance and be easy to use.More Information : http://www.manipalcureandcare.com/preventive/diagnostic_services.aspx

I feel so sad today, i can't quite put my finger on why though, which is kind of annoying....
Had a bit of a scare on Monday........
The pee of earlier this week might have turned into something a bit more dramatic....
