Families in poverty often look to the community for help during the holidays. In the spirit
of giving people donate assorted food items to the needy, deposited in the conveniently
located bins at the supermarket. I have put food in there many times as most of you have
but this year, I am on the receiving end. My family was approved for a Thanksgiving Food
Basket from the Food Bank. I have been looking forward to this for a while. Excited to
see all of the lovely foods and ingredients I will be able to put together for Thanksgiving dinner.
I went down there this morning full of hopes, but they were subsequently dashed to bits. Here
is an itemized list of what I have to work with.
A sack full of onions (seriously, what am I going to do with 2 doz. onions??)
A sack full of pears (a bit mushy, but edible)
Grape jelly
Instant oatmeal
Instant potato flakes
2 doz. eggs (expired in Sept.)
Apple pie (smashed and freezerburnt)
24oz. of "Ready to Serve Pineapple Topping" frozen
Marshmallow Creme
A lovely 8lb. Norbest Turkey (not even freezerburnt...hooray!)
*allright, I can't complain about the above items, but the best is yet to come*
Mini carrots (previously rotten, and refrozen, 2packages)
Corn on the Cob (previously rotten, with some sort of pink mold, and refrozen 2packages)
So do these people think that if you freeze something, it becomes UN-ROTTEN??
I'd really like to be thankful for what I have received, but I just can't feel it. If I actually served
this to my children, we'd probably die from botulism.
We will be eating the turkey, and maybe I can stuff it with marshmallow creme and ready to serve
pineapple topping? I'll have to work on the menu.
Happy Holidays :)
