Last week I posted a rather miserable little thought about how I had a dream that upset me for the rest of the day.  There was some discussion on dreams that got me thinking...  Thought it deserved its own post.

What do you think makes us dream what we do (especially when it's about things we rarely or never think about)?

Do you have dreams that torture you emotionally?  Do you have recurrent dreams?

And most importantly, what do you think the role of dreams are in our life?  Are they random thoughts that reflect our days, our hopes and fears etc., or do they serve a bigger purpose?

i think that dreams are generally the way our subconscious mind tries to tell us what it thinks is missing.

yikes - in that case my subconscious is really trying to get my attention (seems like it would slap me if it could!) heheh...

moonriver confucius say: when me dream, little file clerk in my mind shuffle back and forth between short-term and long-term memory, check file folders, file attributes to ensure everything sorted out, in proper place. but my little file clerk not perfect, rather impish and playful, likes to put "4th quarter evaluations" under "best of penthouse pets" or "17th century szechuan folk tales" under "sophie's letters." so when me sleep and my mind does routine database compact and backup procedure, me dream about november penthouse pet preside over committee meeting, segue into sophie look like zhang ziyi mulan warrior smite down bad werewolf and bring back to nyc zoo exhibit in cage like panda bear on bodybuilding drugs, howling at the moon.

dreams like little child play in mind's attic, among old boxes full of half-forgotten memories.

I used to dream that I was out in public and topless. Is that missing from my life? LOL  My one recurring dream is one where my teeth are crumbling right out of my mouth.  It scares the daylights out of me.  As you may or may not know, I use a wheelchair.  Frequently when I dream, I am walking.

geez, i hope you're not right Ed; one dream i have from time to time is that i'm sleeping with someone other than my wife.  Interestingly, I always get caught.

In Ed's defense I think that's just one of many meanings behind dreams (and definitely a big one in mine).

Sorry, dont know how to link in html crap.
Anywho, yea, I have a few reoccuring dreams. Not many, but a few. After they in a way "came true", I stopped having a couple of them. The rest, I think faded away after realizing the others had come true.
Now as for dream 'ideas', or reoccuring themes, constantly. And they are of the highly annoying/disturbing variation too.

MissMimi: I have had the teeth crumbling dream too... I was so terrified I went to see my dentist, but my teeth were fine.

I didn't think you were supposed to die in your dreams but it has happened to me quite a few times. Those scare me a little bit...: )

MissMimi and momsrock - I too have teeth nightmares. I read once that it means you're deceiving someone.

BB - that IS crazy. Hope your toes are ok...

IFMU - thanks, will check out the link.

Dreams can be rewarding as I said in my recent blog. I actually cannot wait sometimes to continue (don't I wish) a dream or hope another dreams just like it happens soon. My lovely departed wife seems to invade my dream sequences quite often..and it is wonderful. I think I'd sleep my life away if I was assured of her bing in my dreams all the time.

    thanks..JD..or cops

JD - your comment brought tears to my eyes. I don't know if it's crass to say that that is adorable, but it is.  And really heart warming.  I'm glad she visits you so often and you enjoy it so much... brings a whole new meaning to sweet dreams...

(When did she die? How old was she? How long were you married? And am I being way to curious/nosy? Just tell me to back off...)

JD: i don't want to sound like a jerk, but really like that you arn't using bold in this comment.

Sweet, some place on my blog I describe her.

I was close to 20 years older actually, 17 I think, than her.

She was an executive for a food company when I met her. I could not believe that this 20 year old dynamic person could even been remotely interested in this older guy. We worked together quite closely for nearly a year.

We finally got married in 1991 (january) and she died in October right before Thanksgiving. She had colon cancer that had spread to the lymph glands and spread to the lungs. It was super aggressive and radiation/chemo..did squat. She was loved by everyone that met her and she was beautiful. 5'1" 100 lbs, LONG..dark brown/almost brunette and built like a miniature model. Soft voice and beautiful legs..oh MY..I was then, am now, will always be a leg man..Laughing here. When she comes to me in my dreams it is aways with soft warm kissed..and that IS the truth. Sometimes I can taste them. I wake up and can still taste them.  .wow..I was trying to be light-hearted..but I miss her so oooooo much...Ask anything anytime Sweet, Ed, moon, Mimi..well heck..anyone..luv yas..JS

Why do dreams seem to be a reoccuring topic lately on soulcast? I enjoy reading thoughts about dreams although, I've posted something about dreams with many questions and they don't seem to have any answers. Still, some questions were much the same as yours were so I'm getting a few theories and ideas.

I've been told that we dream so that our subconcious mind can solve problems in our sleep. That's comforting to know because it seems that we have no time to contemplate our problems during the day.
  • copsunited said on Nov 24, 2006....
Now I know I am opening a door that should remain closed becasue of the controverys and the "nuts coming from the wood work" theme but in all honesty I have to tell you that dreams have almost perfectly depicted events in my life that had yet to happen. Almost perfect portrayal of the entire sequence that eventually DID happen. Sometimes it shocked me and left me totally dumb to the idea of ever revealing it. I'm safe here because no one knows me and those that would..well...

1981 I was living in the mountains of Montana. I had been camped up there for several weeks. In my dream the local Sheriff came into my campa and wanted to know who I was, what I was doing there and was cautioning me about bears in the vicinity etc. He was not nasty but very business like. Some four days later that exact thing happened but he was looking for some Irish Travelers (look that up in Funk and Wagnalls. Not really nice people) and thought I might be one of them.

Several weeks ago I had a dream that I'd bet $5.00 on the first hole of a golf tournament. My second shot was a short pitch/wedge to the green and the ball rolled to within 3 inches of the cup. And YUP..the very next week it happend in real life EXACTLY as I had dreamed of it. I birdied and won the hole..now go figure.

There have been many more such incidents..even visits from family members that have passed over but I really think it's too weird to elaborate on. Believe it or not...

    that's up to you..but I do speak the truth..JD..cops

Cops - thanks so much for sharing. It was so touching. I was involved with a guy 18 years older than myself when I was 20 and it was interesting because ppl in my family used to tell me that I should be concerned about growing old with him (apparently because he'd die so much sooner than me).  Just goes to show you never know what happens in life... I'm sorry you had to go through that, but happy you were able to spend such a great time with her as well.  Some people don't get that in a lifetime.
As for your abilities to dream about the future - I believe you! But then again, I have been known to go to tarot card readers : ) so I'm pretty nuts.

The Perfect ... I'm not sure there will ever be any real answers. My questions about dreams are endless.  I'm sure a lot of other people have those same questions too which is why it's getting so much 'air time' here on SC.  I like the idea that dreams work to sort out our problems... gives it a real purpose and meaning!
  • Dicconzane said on Nov 28, 2006....

I've had recurring dreams where I've known it's a dreram second time round (so sort of technically not recurring I guess) so I know what's going to happen. Great fun running round the second time. For any who remember the kid's programme Knightmare one was based around that. But now I don't tend to dream at all.

As for what causes them. Did philosophy at uni and there are no real answers just best guesses. We don't even really know how memory works so even though we may not think we think about something that occurs in dreams it's possible something that has happened recently has brought out whatever we dreamed about.

i had a terrible dream fe years ago. in that time i saw my mama died. i got so sad and felt so lost. i felt those feelings till now on and since that time i learnt a lot to appreciate her..
  • FUBAR said on Apr 22, 2008....
I think dreaming is just a way our mind entertains us while sleeping; there is no connection or hidden meaning. Just entertainment because you can't turn your mind off, it has to do something while we sleep.

For years I've been into lucid dreaming and am highly astute in my endeavers. I can do anything I want and completely control things; even rewinding to make changes. It is like living life but being magic: no rules. Not sure how this works but again, entertainment by the mind.

I had a really weird dream last night, and even if I'm usually the one who interprets everyone else's dreams, I can't seem to figure this one out exactly....
yesterday...
I looked up on the hill, and there was hubby holding down a huge white, furry bear! He had duct-taped the front paws together, and the back paws together---and he was laughing as he threatened to unleash it at me!

I was cowered in a room loo...
I had a dream last night. It centred upon a bonsai tree my boyfriend bought me for Christmas last year.

When I looked at the bonsai tree it looked as it usually does, very green leafy, a healthy tree. But then on closer inspection the bonsai...
