as i blogged earlier, this thursday marks thanksgiving in the US.  this means that this friday is black friday.  in the US, black friday is marked by an orgy of shopping such as isn't seen any other day of the year, including christmas eve--it marks the official beginning of the christmas shopping season.

how do you handle your holiday shopping?  do you have any black friday war stories?

years ago, my sister and i set out at the crack of dawn to reach the mall at 8 am.  in those days, that was considered an early opening on black friday.  we game planned out the shopping list for everyone and the only thing we had to buy that day was the present for our parents: a set of flannel sheets for their bed.  we were in and out in 15 minutes, having paid less than we expected.

how about you?

I have successfully avoided shopping on black friday my entire life! I volunteer to work while everyone else in our office goes shopping...

    Ed,
I will never do it.  I do not go to malls, unless I have to.  I went not too long ago (I think it was last week), to get my Daughter's Christmas pictures taken.  They told me they would be ready for pick-up on BLACK FRIDAY!  ARGH!  I think I may wait for Monday to get them, or pay someone to get them for me, lol!

Are you going this year Ed?

This will be my first one!!! I've previously refused to do it, but money for a college student is practically non-existent, and this new acquirement of friends is seriously going to bankrupt me. So I'm going to see if I can get some things at a discount, particularly a lime green ipod that one friend is expecting. I mean really, who EXPECTS a particular over $200 gift?? Bankrupt I tell ya, BANKRUPT!!

I will be off from work, but I will not be at the mall. I actually have a brain. No one with a brain would go unless they are just gluttons for punishment. Waiting another week or going in the evenings during the week make it no big deal. Not having that many to buy for any more also helps.

    *shudder*

My grandmother used to drag me out with her at 6AM on Black Friday every year. It was sheer madness.

You could not PAY me to get me out at the mall the day after Thanksgiving now.

    Two words: Online shopping. :)

i don't know how i would spend that day right now.  quite probably in a movie theater watching the new james bond movie.  it looks promising, i gotta say.

i'm fairly certain that at some point during the shoppin season, i'm gonna wind up making a pilgrimage to the biggest mall on this side of the mississippi: king of prussia.

Show up somewhere at an ungodly hour for shopping? Yeah right.

I just go to work at normal times....

I'm with Infernal and do alot of my toy shopping online---  I figured that out years ago, and I cannot tell you how much pain it alleviates.  The UPS guy is like my best bud for a month.

But black friday i've done almost every year for the past 10.  It all started with Tickle Me Elmo....where i stood in line at KB toys at 4 am waiting for the store to open at 6!  I did get my Elmo, but there weren't many more after me who did.

I have stood in many lines for many toys.

The last few years I don't have to stand in line anymore, but i'm so disfunctional now, i feel i HAVE to get up at 4, go for coffee, and then wonder around a store or two or 3 at 5 and 6 am.  I'm usually home by 9 or 10.......sometimes before my family is even awake.

If you really want to see something surreal, go to walmart at 5am on black friday and just sit in your car and watch.
By 5:15, people are flooding out carrying large boxes containing TV's....you can't even imagine how weird this looks......everyone with huge boxes marching out....
I just sit and check out what everyone else woke up so early for!

I never go shopping the day after Thanksgiving, EVER.

Usually most of my shopping is done by Thanksgiving.  This year, for some reason, I don't have a lick of it done.  I guess there has been too much going on in my life lately to even think about Christmas shopping.  I mean I don't even have a single idea of what I want to get anyone or what anyone wants for that matter.  And my family, which draws names, hasn't even done that yet this year.  YIKES!

I will end up doing the bulk of my shopping online, most likely.

My mom used to work at WalMart a few years back.  One year on black friday, a customer punched her because he didn't believe her that the store had run out of t.v's

I don't usually go shopping on Black Friday.  I think it's very over rated.  I really prefer Ebay for a lot of my holiday shopping.

Never been in any kind shop on Black Friday!

I dont care if i can save 10 or 100 dollars. I prefer start ahead of time and look around, shop mostly in discount stores or online. I always found great presents and the toys for the kids have never been sold out.

This year is going to be the one with the shortest list ever and the less money ever. So the problem doesn't even exist. Sad but true.

My ex sister-in-law is an expert of Black Friday. Each year she and her mom get up at 5 am and shop until the stores close. They have no mercy and dont take prisoners. She sometimes indeed saved some money but still i dont think is for me.

    r: holy cats, that's insane!

for me, black friday shopping has always been more about getting things on my checklist done than saving money.  :>
