Should marijauna be legal for recreational use?

Simple I think the answer is yes. For one thing, the health effects of marijauna are less or equal to that of alcohol. A person high is a lot less likely to commit violent crimes than a person on other drugs, probaly even less likely than a sober person. So why not?

Yes.  I think this should have happened long ago.

Well I am afraid of the social bad effects if this becomes wide spread. I should think it be prescriptive
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 18, 2006....

I don't think the social effects would be any different than they are now. I mean you go to the mall and chances are you can find something with a pot leaf on it, there's a magazine dedicated to smoking marijuana which shows it is already has it's own subculture, and I'd say that the bad social effects of it are all a matter of perspective. If you disagree with using marijuana you'd view it as a negative thing while if you are for it you would view it as a positive thing. Any bad affects seen on both sides would be a lot less severe than those already seen from drinking.

I am with ed on this one.  Of course with the proper restrictions and such i.e. restrictions to minors, and arresting people who are DUI, just for the safety of the public.

You do have a very good point comparing it to alcohol though, it may pretty well be just smoking and drinking combined; although that may be a poor analogy.

Having been a TRUE "recreatonal" user (one who only uses when available for FREE) for many years (I quit buying when the price went from $10 to $25 a lid), I feel that we the people need to just stand up and tell the Government that "we will smoke". I want you to take a look at the few places where it is legal to do so and see how LITTLE the crime rate is there. Now they dont have to make it legal in ALL areas, they can have controlled aread like in Vancover B,C, Just give those of us who want to partake a little space of our own in each city and GTFO of our way.
Just an opinion from one guy.

I wouldn't mind. Should just be like alcohol regulations. I'm not holding my breath though to see it ever happen here in indonesia :)

    Cheers!

Yes, definetely. Alcohol is legal, smoke is legal. They legally kill. At least marijuana can even be used to help serioulsy ill people to face better their pain.
  • grist said on Nov 18, 2006....
I think what I am uncomfortable it is that it is use for recreational use, I rather say it for medical uses. true smoke and alcohol are bad and they are legal but do we need to add one more to the list.

It aint no secret that i smoke weed on a regular basis and I'd love it more than anything for it to be legal but I'd have to say no this one because I feel that it will become freely available to a wider community, I don't think that will do anyone any good. The market will become more widespread and young people especially will want to experiment with it more, there in fact are some very mental and emotionally damaging consequences to smoking it over a long period of time. I know that is exactly the same as with drinking alcohol but it is far easier to become addicted to.

Actually, unlike alcohol, cigarettes, the harder drugs, and even caffine, marijuana is not physically addictive. It is mentally addictive/habitual like washing your hands after you use the restroom, taking a shower when you wake up in the morning, or eating at a certain time of day. I think it could actually do people good when you take into consideration the tax revenue provided from taxing recreational drugs, the new jobs it could create, and help unburden the overloaded court system. The legal market will come more widespread, like universal said, but if you look at how widespread the illegal market already is I don't think it would have as much of an impact as it may seem. Part of the mental damages comes from the paranoia experienced which may not be from the drug itself. The paranoia is mainly related to a fear of getting in trouble with the law and like any unhealthy feeling, can turn into a mental disorder. Making it legal makes it possible to get rid of this feeling and therefore the disorder. Also given the relatively unharmful effects on a person in the short term, you don't have to expect violent outburst/actions from a person that is high as you would with a drunk. As for young people wanting to do it, I think having it illegal makes people want to do things like that even more. The young people want to rebel against what they are being told they can and cannot do so since marijauna is already readily available in most communities, making it legal would hlep the government control who buys and sells it more.

I just stopped by because I was going through Soulcast withdrawal - LOL - and although I've quit - it should be legalized and taxed just like ed said
  • scalywag said on Nov 18, 2006....
    yes it should be legalized
  • VoiceofVirginiaBeach said on Jul 01, 2007....
Yes it should be legalized. Marijuana smoke is proven that It is better for the body than any type of cigarette. It physically does less than alcohol and tabaccoand mentally does less than alcohol. People tend to tell me that the government is just trying to keep us healthy and living. well to do that you will have to get rid of everything. Personally I think our rules in the government should follow the same idea of cable tv. (I apologize for the simple metaphor) People are required to purchase cable, If one is against what they see, they block it or don't pay every month to watch it. It is the same as any legal drug we have today. People choose to purchase tabacco, and alcohol. I do not purchase alcohol. I'm not a drinker at all. I think drinking is a horrible thing, but I'm not going around protesting that it should be illegal. I think people have the right to do as they please as long as it does not disturb others of their freedom. As the constitution says, we have the right to the pursuit of happiness, and I am a firm believer of that.

Research in the 1970's proved beyond a shadow of doubt that THC kills 10,000 times more brain cells than a shot of whiskey. That research was widely circulated, and I guess everyone still using pot completely killed all their brain cells, and that info has not been seen for years. Typical media, hide the truth and if people die, so what. Shame, Shame, Shame.

The research done in the 1970's was one experiment performed on monkeys who were smothered with pure cannabis smoke that had no oxygen in it, and the first thing that happens when an organism is deprived of oxygen is that it loses brain cells. THC kills no brain cells and has actually been seen to improve creativity. If you don't believe my post look for the movie Super High Me or the documentary The Union: The Business Behind Getting High.
