If this is what passes for musical aptitude, just shoot me now. One Myspace survey I found is supposedly a measure of your music tastes or something. I think this is probably one of the most poorly compiled list of bands/artists I've ever seen. It's quite an eyesore.

Repost as ___% music freak

Funny, I always thought "music freaks" had an idea of what was influential and what fits into a specific genre. This is basically a list culled from someone's superficial musical knowledge, because they're mostly current bands who have exercised no influence over their respective genres. It's all terrible mainstream stuff that everybody's "supposed to" listen to. The list doesn't represent 1% of the music spectrum, and the bands listed hardly represent 1% of their genres. I mean, what the hell kind of classic rock list doesn't have the fucking Kinks on it? The (second) most influential and the longest-running British Invasion band!!! Come the hell on! Not to mention the heavily influential Velvet Underground, without whom the indie category wouldnt even exist! I hate people's music tastes nowadays, because the result of it is tripe like that survey. I'm embarrassed on behalf of my age bracket.

PS: Also note the complete lack of genres like jazz, classical, oldies, R & B... but they got hair metal on there. Idiots.

hmph, this is nothing more than a list of bands someone listens to. where's Cibo Matto? Dire Straits? Bee Gees? Ellington? Sinatra? Fred Astaire? good god, i could go on forever.

...at least "everything" isnt a choice, ne?
...and on that point, i would consider that I'm a 100% Music freak, because this survey is complete BS.

silver: Oh, well... according to the survey you're 9% music freak! I'm pretty sure you know many more bands than that which is listed here. That list basically says "quantity over quality," considering a lot of these bands and artists are pretty forgettable.

irish: Welcome to SoulCast, little brother. And now that you got me started again, here goes.
    - They neglect anything in the post-punk period including The Cure and Joy Division, but the entire indie list has their influences in that era.
    - They list Modest Mouse but not Talking Heads.
    - Show me any... ANY Eric Clapton project that's listed.
    - Even the hair metal list is inadequate! They missed Whitesnake and Judas Priest.
    - Nobody who would take stock in this list would have EVER heard of Cibo Matto. Which is a crying shame.

This is one of those topics that I will refuse to let go unnoticed. I think it's a travesty.

honestly, how you could neglect either the cure or joy division os beyond me.  or hell, the clash or the pistols, for pity's sake!

Damn, silver. I totally forgot about clash and the pistols! That's right in my music tastes too. The absurdity of the survey clouded my judgment lol.
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 15, 2006....
obviously, whoever created the list doesn't really know late 70s/early 80s music.  :>

This "quiz" is pathetic! The random acts are by majority just glorified powerpop acts, which don't want the label. The only person who deserves that title is Frank Zappa. Who might I add is not on the list. How do they have a metal section with no mention of two of the three founders, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Even, revolutionary acts out like Iron Maiden and Motorhead are left in the cold. They even left out the fuckin' Ramones and New York Dolls. Two bands that punk and many other styles owe their Asses to are left off. No fuckin' Mike Patton either; what the fuck! One thing amazes me, though. They actually attempted to put a ska section in. Pretty, shitely I might I add, but it’s the thought that counts. This test was made by an unkwoledgeable wannabe underground lover for unknowledgeable wannabe underground lovers.
