So lately, I've been feeling like crap.  I still do.  I know it's the D-word, because I'm quite familiar with what that feels like.  I'm smart enough to know the world isn't REALLY coming to an end even if I feel like it is.  It will pass :)

At least now, DH knows that I'm struggling again, and although I don't generally like it when he goes dragon-slaying for me, he came up with an idea that may help me deal with some of the difficult feelings I've been having and I'm excited to see how it plays out.  If it gets anywhere, I'll keep you posted!

Anyway!  I have found the secret to happiness, and I will share it with you in three words:  Terry's Chocolate Orange.

Alright, so it's totally cliché for a stressed-out woman to turn to chocolate.  But as with many clichés, there is a reason why it's that way!  I was first introduced to chocolate oranges when I was around 16.  My best childhood friend had gotten married the year before (she was several years older than me) and was pregnant.  She came to visit me to use up some frequent flyer miles before they ran out, and brought a couple with her - I think they were one of her cravings or else they helped her manage her nausea.  I had never heard of them before.  She offered me a slice...I was hooked.

The only place they sold them outside of the Christmas season, where I lived, was a Cracker Barrel restaurant.  Here in Canada, they are more in touch with the British/Continental tradition of chocolatiers.  That is, all the yummy British and Swedish and what-have-you chocolates that are hard to find in the U.S., they sell here at your average drug store and Wal-Mart.  Imagine the variety and quality of chocolate you find during holidays in the U.S., available year-round.  Holidays here are absolutely delectable: our local Wal-Mart sells 3 or 4 different KINDS of chocolate oranges (my favorite is the Snowball, made from white chocolate) at Christmas.

After going on a crying jag earlier this afternoon, I realized that the drug store just a moment's walk from our building sells chocolate oranges.  And Coke.  I have a little pocket money...

And now I'm not crying anymore *grin*

Thanks, SW.  You know, I'm beginning to suspect you have some sort of time-suspending watch or something, the way you're always first to comment on every post. :D  Nah, I know how addicting SoulCast can be.  I haven't been doing it lately, but I have been known to spend entire days reading, commenting, posting and refreshing, lather/rinse/repeat.

I mean it as a compliment, because it's so steadying knowing that you've already read or will read shortly whatever I just wrote :)

A time turner!  See, I was thinking of the watch in Clockstoppers, but a literary reference suits me much better, I think.

Hello nyt, glad you're feeling better. Personally I loathe Terry's Chocolate Oranges but that's okay as there'll be more for you ;-)
  • nytquill17 said on Nov 09, 2006....
Thanks, Alyss :)  I can't imagine not liking them myself, but everyone's tastebuds are geared to different things and both chocolate and orange are rather strong flavors, so I can comprehend.  Hopefully you have a treat that suits you as well as chocolate oranges suit me!

    More for me, indeed ;)

I have to admit, nyt, the thought of a chocolate orange is extremely repulsive (I don't do oranges), but the thought of, say, Cadbury mini-eggs or other chocolates by them being in stores year-round more than makes up for it! Wow. *drool*

    Is it Easter yet? :-D

    Glad you're feeling better. :)

TIO: *sigh* Unfortunately the Cadbury Eggs are "just for Easter" as their slogan says.  But we have various Cadbury chocolate bars out the wazoo up here.  More than just Caramilk :p  My favorite is Cadbury Dream, which is pure white chocolate.  When I lived in the states, my only options for white chocolate were Hershey's Cookies and Cream, which had cookie bits in it - nothing wrong with that, but not very good if you're looking for "uncontaminated" chocolate - or to buy white baking chocolate which is pretty expensive. Or to wait for Easter. So Cadbury Dream is awesome!  But there are lots of other kinds here.

The best though (and most expensive, naturally) are Lindor Chocolates, chocolate shells maybe 3/4" across, with a chocolate based filling, in white, milk, dark, hazelnut, and a few seasonal varieties ("phantom" which is milk on the outside and white on the inside, for Halloween, stracciato - sp? - which is white with flecks of cocoa, in the spring, and white with strawberry in summer).  That filling is like a little piece of heaven, I swear to you.  If you've never tasted it, and if you can find one, they sell little "sampler" sets of 3 for $1-2 and it is SO worth it.  *grin*

Those things are all great but nothing takes my mind off life like music.

Ooooh, nyt...you just reminded me of the Chocolate Factory (or whatever it was called) in good old D-boro. Did you ever go there while at school?

They had these Bailey's eggs that were chocolate with a rich filling - and a Kahlua version too. I'm not one for alcohol, but they were to die for!

I love white chocolate, too...unfortunately, it makes me sick. :-/

I'll have to look for Lindor chocolates!

We see those here only at Christmas too.  They are delicious though.
Have you had the chocolate raspberry one?  I know they make it, but i have yet to see it.

My mom told me not to trust people who doesn't like chocolate.

Sorry to hear about your rough patch, glad you're over it, though.

I wrote up a little piece on depression/happiness some time ago.  Perhaps you could take a look at it?  It may offer you a fresh perspective on some things.

    Best regards,

    Grape.
