i fetched mrs from her office today so we could go out for lunch. we rarely have the chance to do so especially during workdays. as it happened, the trial i attended this morning (where i presented to the stand the best witness i ever had) was near her office.

we went to our favorite restaurant and, for starters, ordered  soup and salad. mrs smiled when i  got one of my all-time favorite : clam soup. tonight, we had hot and sour soup before dinner at home.

i always want to sip some hot soup before going to the main course. it somehow colors the beginning of my meal, in the same manner a simple banana crowns and consummates my gustatory experience. my favorites are crab and corn soup, chicken asparagus soup, and clam soup.

how about you, are you a soup person? if so, what's your favorite?

    I'm making a corn/potaoe/cheddar chowder tonite......YUM!

Oh, gosh...I have to pick ONE?

If I ever opened a restaurant, it would be a soup buffet of sorts. I think that'd be hella-cool, even if it was seasonal.

I love potato chowder (heartier than potato soup, though similar) with bacon bits and cheese on top. Or, San Francisco chili in a sourdough breadbowl - YUM! I'd love to go back to California one day (visited once) just for that!

hmmmm.... my mouth is watering just reading your comments.

TIO: soup buffet? that would really be great. please tell me when and where you're opening one.

My absolute favorite soup is rather simple--creamy tomato soup.  I love it because it's fabulous by itself but it's also terrific as an accompaniment to grilled cheese sandwiches.

After creamy tomato soup--and it has to be creamy, it cannot be water-based--my other favorites are hot and sour, potato chowder, new england clam chowder, split-pea, black bean, mexican tortilla soup, bean with bacon, and wanton soup.  (Those are listed in no particular order, btw.)

TIO--there is actually a franchise of soup buffets called Soup 'R Salad.  I used to visit there regularly when I lived in Texas (it's not in all parts of Texas though).  Here where I am now, there is another franchise soup buffett (they offer salads too) calls Zoup!.

thanks for dropping by, super z. once a soulcasters convention or social gathering is held, i guess it would be best if the organizers prepare all types of food that we have blogged about. i can now imagine a long buffet table for soup alone... ;-)

The best soup for me is cannellini beans soup. Cannellini are the white, smallest beans and they give a creamy texture to the soup. The soup is served with Parmigiano Reggiano and oil of olive. Another big fav is minestrone, basically you throw together any veggie you like accompanied with crostini. I like Corsican soup, a specialty of Corsica, the island in front of the French coast...its superlative...made with three particular local fishes, tomatoes and lots of garlic, crostini spread with a cream made with some of the fish left out puree' with milk and flour.

Here in Texas i learned to love any kind of chichen tortilla soup and chili soup.

I just had some broccoli cheese soup today that was pretty tasty.  I'm not notmally a soup person but I do like New England clam chowder.

The only time I make soup is when I have a ham bone looking like it wants to be used up.  Then I make ham and bean soup, but I wouldn't eat it if you paid me.  My husband eats it...and eats it... and eats it.  I put most of it in the freezer.

  • quidnunc said on Nov 08, 2006....
missmimi: that also explains why mrs compels me to have some everytime we have it on the table...

ginger: oh my, i would love to have the recipe. could you, please?

paper: your comment was "utterly delicious" just the same ;-)

firefly: i guess it's time to chow!

there's this place where my wife and i spent much of our courtship, a little pub located halfway b/n our parents' homes, that made the best darned cream soups you've ever had.  their cream soups were so light, and they didn't use flour.  they were transcendent soups, i tell you.

    [sigh]

i miss the heck out of that place.  perhaps i'll blog about it.

My mother recently sent me a recipe for a cabbage beef soup that's really good.  I love it; my husband is not fond of cabbage soup and since the recipe makes a large pot, I usually make it and freeze it in several individual serving portions that I can pop out of the freezer and quickly thaw when I am in the mood for that soup.
  • dazed_and_confused said on Nov 09, 2006....

I am  a crab and corn soup kind of girl! :D too bad I recently had a rash scare so I am basically off limits to seafoods and eggs!

And oh yeah, I love nido soup and mushroom soup . Hmm... hopefully I can splurge on my favorite soups after my rashes subside!

    Cheers Everyone!

Crab Meat with Corn.  Tops on my list is Bird's Nest with Quail Eggs Soup.  Chinese soups are really delectable and are prepared with the most freshest and tastiest exotic ingredients.

How come nobody said Soup No. 5 with all its aphrodisiac and medicinal effects?
  • Frlncwrtr said on Nov 09, 2006....
Yes, quid, it is yummy stuff!
  • quidnunc said on Nov 09, 2006....
FD: hmmmm, soup number? i've heard of it but have not actually tried one. i also like bird's nest with quail eggs. this is what i get whenever i dine at any alex restraurant.

shell, yours would be a perfect comment for another blog... but the funniest comment in mine. thank you for dropping by just the same.
