Good evening my darlings.
I've just spent the entire day in silence writing and finishing up a canvas for my bedroom, and feeling a bit, well, de-socialized.  I'm also obsessively listening to Vincent by Don Mclean - Starry Starry Night. Is it just me or is there anyone else out there who tears up at "now I understand what you tried to say to me... and how you suffered for your sanity..."
I hope it's Mclean's sad tone that makes me misty eyed, and nothing to do with me relating to Van Gogh.  In any case it got me thinking about what a good idea it would be to write about a painting.  Could be great inspiration. Has anyone ever done this?
Some great posts today as usual. I will try to pull myself together to write something more upbeat later on...

i find that i'm inspired by various things all over the place, and it doesn't matter where i find them.

i wish i had the talent to paint.

so do I. thankfully a lack of talent doesn't stop me. You should try it too Ed - it's fun and it doesn't have to be anything elaborate. sometimes just a couple of blocks of color is enough to have fun and make something different for your home. acrylics are easy to play with for that kind of thing...

nah, i just sketch.  it requires less material.  :>

oooh - sketching is good too! I used to do that a lot as a kid, but now my sketching is limited to doodles while talking on the phone.

i haven't actually drawn anything in literally years.

    hm.  i should change that.

I once tried to write a story about the two people featured in Caillebotte's Paris Street, Rainy Day (1877) for a friend who dearly loves the painting. For some reason the story just never gelled but it was a fascinating experience to try it.

I grew up with a reproduction of van Gogh's "Bedroom at Arles" on the wall of my bedroom. Between that and a love for all things Beethoven, it's amazing that I still have my senses.

Sweet, yes, i paint and draw. I used to sell my ink only drawings years ago.

My favorite tecnique is with acrylic and ink or aquarello. I have several of my works hanging around the house. In those past years I didnt have the same time i used to have....i wondered if my inspiration is running a little dry....no time for big painting but i continue to draw in ink ....

my daughter is a promising artist as well...her art teacher told me she is really giftet...

    she makes me proud...

One of my favorite things to do when i visit new cities is going to their art museums...

if i have to choose which painting i would steal from a musuem it would be Starry Night of van Gogh an dany of his works and the whole collection of Miro and Matisse, Klimt and Botero.

I grew up copying Piero Della Francesca, Giotto e Leonardo during our art classes. So i can loose myself in any church as well...i have been lucky to grow up in Italy....

Ginger, this is an entirely new side of you that you're revealing here. I admire people who can draw and paint for I have absolutely no ability in that direction. Maybe it's one of the reasons why I studied art history in college - because that was the only way I could get close to the masters.
  • gingersoul said on Nov 06, 2006....
Lionel, i passed 2 exams in Art history in college even though they were not strictly related to my major, I simply couldn't resist...:-).
The simple drawing tecnique has been one the best gift my father passed on me....he used to paint on some big rocks...
    strange but they were beautiful....

Isn't simply amazing what a man can do with a brush and some colors?

I suffer when i am watching some painting in some museum and i can't touch them....i am drawned to feel their texture, to touch the canvas....during my last visit at New York last July i finally went to see the the MoMa.....absolutely electrifying........

Museums are amazing. One of my favorite days ever was an entire day spent at the Guggenheim museum in NYC. I've also used up many entire days at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
  • sweet*nothing said on Nov 06, 2006....
I love the Guggenheim because it is so simple to walk through. Sometimes feel lost and intimated by the really huge museums that are built like mazes.
GS - i'm intrigued by yoru use of both acrylic and ink. So you use them both in the same painting? Interesting...
  • lioneljay said on Nov 06, 2006....
SN, that is definitely one of the reasons why Wright designed the Guggenheim as he did - to make it a more accessible experience. On the other hand, there's something very erotic about getting "lost" in a museum with someone you like very much. It must be all the stimulation from the art, the maze-like surroundings, and the sense of being in a long (though civilized) cave that does it.
  • sweet*nothing said on Nov 06, 2006....
Everything is erotic to you LJ  lol : )
Seriously though, now that you put it that way I'm really quite sold on the idea...
  • lioneljay said on Nov 06, 2006....
See? It's not so one-track-minded as you thought at first, is it?
  • gingersoul said on Nov 06, 2006....
No, Sweet, I completely agree with LJ...
i had this kind of experience several times...its makes you feel more connected to the person you are with....admiring beauty and seeing beauty together is indeed inspiring...standing in front a beautiful painting and slightly touching each other hands knowing we like the same thing, we are moved by the same visual......
once it happened that i was perusing this little medioeval museum in Florence when my eyes got the sight of a guy...the kind i like, misterious, intellectual....he was alone, very concentrated in observing ...but not too much, because he noticed my look  and he looked back at me ....we kind crossed our path several times ...but both were too shy i guess to make it a memorable day..sigh...
  • gingersoul said on Nov 06, 2006....
Sweet..to answer to your question.....yes i use both acrylic and ink in the same painting.
I use acryclic for covering the biggest portion of the drawing and then ink to add details ...sometimes on top of the same acrylic...
Aquarello is cute but i find it kind of limited....i have to integrate it with some other tecnique ...

What is your favorite tecnique? Do you paint big canvas or small ones?
  • sweet*nothing said on Nov 07, 2006....

Oh, I wish I had a ‘technique’! I’m definitely not that much of a painter to have one just yet. I have only started recently as I moved into a new place and was finding it almost impossible to find art that I liked to put up on my walls.  So I decided to take matters into my own hands – so far this has entailed just canvas and acrylics.  Although this weekend I did one for my bedroom that is a large canvas with markers, crayons, pastels and a bit of acrylic paint – it looks more like a white board with my favorite quotes and random doodlings on it.  It will continue to be a work in progress as I keep adding things I like if and when I come across anything worth noting down.

Thanks L J : ) You're quickly becoming one of my favorite go-to guys for pep talks and support. *mwah*
  • gingersoul said on Nov 07, 2006....
    Sweet..
i agree with LJ.....anything goes if helps to express your creativity and yourself.....

    Yes, Sweet..isn't this guy great? {ginger smiles to sweet and LJ}
