I have had some conversations recently about homosexual marriage (not civil union).  There have been claims that most people believe it shouldn't be legalised.  There have also been claims that most believe it should be legalised.

Without starting a heated and tiresome debate, I am curious as which is really true.  So here's what we're gonna do.

You, my dear soulcasters, will be part of my unscientific poll.  Please vote for one of three choices.

  1. Yes, homosexual marraige should be legalised.
  2. No, it should not be legal.
  3. I am undecided.

Please do not feel that you need to expound on your choice (but you can if you like) and, if it would make feel more comfortable, post your vote anonymously.

I go with a strong yes.  Its one of the many issues I'm willing to fight over.

This place is packed with homo-lovers. I can tell you the outcome of this survey right now. As for me ...

    3. I am undecided.

That is actually my opinion on a lot of things. I just like to argue with people who think they know it all and think they really know what they believe when in fact they just say what they think most people want to hear.

A better question for this place might be "why do you think gay marriage should be legal?"

Damn, I am starting to feel like the spokesperson for the anti-gay marriage league, and I really do not give a crap.
  • SeanRenaud said on Nov 05, 2006....
I feel that any two people who want to reap the LEGAL benefits of marriage should get the same benefits with the same amount of paperwork.  I don't care if you are a man and woman, man and man, man and daughter, brother and sister or roomates you should get identical tax breaks, hospital visitations rights etc etc etc if you so desire.

As far as "marriage" its just a word.  I really think that this is a textbook example of Separation of Church and State.  The state should long ago have decided to acknowledge gays with what I listed above (and if they wanted to save face use the reasons I did and the examples I did) and the church can figure this shit out with out us and without the aid of laws.

You'll be unsurprised to hear that I think that  it should be legalised.
  • missb said on Nov 05, 2006....

    Can I not vote?

It's not that I'm undecided either, but I don't really care. Like I said in Ed's post, I think if they do legalise it, I'm happy for you. But if they don't, I'm sorry.

I'm more interested in gay couple having kids. I just feel that if I were to born in a family with 2 dads or 2 moms, I'd feel weird :/

    Cheers!

    My vote....yes!
  • boyzmom said on Nov 05, 2006....
I vote no, just because I think marriage is ridiculous. They can make an innocent spouse legally responsible for another person's actions. Who wants that hanging over their head when they find out that their significant other isn't all they thought they were. Also it costs $300 to get a divorce, and only $30 to get married. I guess it would be good for the states that expect the divorce rate to rise as a result of legalizing gay marriage, look at all the money they are making.

I have to agree on the tax deal. We should all pay maybe two percent of our gross, period. Taxes are just something the Democrat and liberal run congress have used for social engineering. In the past, Republicans could not stay in power long enough to demonstrate the wisdom of lower taxes, which in the long run increases tax revenues.

Sorry, forgot the topic, which I would rather stay away from in this gay haven.

    No doubt about it...YES....

    Boyzmom...$300 for getting a divorce?
Where do you live? i should have been there when i divorced...damn...:-)

I see no problem with civil unions, giving the partners the same protections under the law that a married couple would have, but I think the term "marriage" should be used to define a union of one man and one woman.  So I am going to respond by voting for #1.
  • satyr said on Nov 05, 2006....
oops - missed an important typo - that should be #2

  • MissMimi said on Nov 05, 2006....
Absolutely yes, it should be legalized.
  • GrapeKoolaid said on Nov 05, 2006....
Why should these people be treated any different?  I say they have as much right to be miserable and unfulfilled as the rest of us.  If the Church says it's wrong, then don't get married in a church(duh).  Do it in city hall, or something.  See, the thing is, you shouldn't force your own hangups on other people.  If you think it's wrong, then don't do it, but that doesn't mean those people you disagree with should be limited in their rights and freedoms.  It's a clear-cut, simple issue.  It's not about you, it's about them.

Lastly, I posted this somewhere earlier, but I feel that it deserves a re-post(forgive me happykat if I go a little long on this).  I received this email from a friend of mine and I think we should all take another look at it.

10 Reasons Why Gay Marriage is Wrong

    1.  Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

    2.  Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

    3.  Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

    4.  Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

    5.  Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears'  55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

    6.  Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

    7.  Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

    8.  Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

    9.  Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

    10.  Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

    NOT THAT AGAIN!!!!
  • curmudgeon said on Nov 05, 2006....
I'd say gay marriage ought to be legal, but that it ought to be made so through legislation - NOT dictated to us by a handful of judges by votes of 5-4, 4-3 or what have you.

If gays want to marry, then they ought to pressure their representatives and win their friends, relatives and enemies over to their point of view, not attempt to sue their way in and have their way of life shoved down the throats of the rest of us.

That said, if a church refuses to marry gays, it ought to be free to do so and remain immune from discrimination lawsuits. Of course, once gay marriage is legal, the discrimination lawsuits will ensue. The ugly truth is that this myth about separation of Church and State runs only one way.
  • SeanRenaud said on Nov 05, 2006....
IT has to be "dictated" by the judges.  Its a matter of deciding if the laws that currently are on the books apply to them.  No new paper work is needed at the present.  Though there will be more before this ends.

Well, if anyone shoud be stupid enough to commit to the corrupted and compromised institution of marriage - why not allow gay, aliens etc commit to it? Marriage is just an outdated business contract, anyway.

I guess from the point of view of reproduction..it's (gay marriage) is a great thing. Can't give birth from the anal cannal. frankly I think if two people love each other..go for it but as far as making it a thing of "law"  nuts.. The law allows "will" and other documents to protect the sig other..
Oh well..hard to see all of it since I am Hetrosexual and I don't run a church of the Evangilical mode.

I'm not entirely comfortable with homosexuality or what I think about it, but that may be my issue. I think it should be legalized as an act of tolerance - which is a greater principle/issue - if nothing else. And the sooner we can do that the sooner we can stop talking about it and start talking about actual issues that have actual societal impacts.

If marriage is not for romantic love, and strictly for legal benefits and protections, it has to be made available to all consenting couples, not just fertile heterosexuals.  If the assumption is that marriage is first and foremost about romantic love, then any two people in love should be marriageable. Why restrict age, color, religion, incest or any other relationship barrier? Let marriage sanction any and all. If marriage is only to be used as a breeding system for more members of certain religions, that sucks. Love is subjective, there’s no way that you can tell whether I am in love or not. Two men, a child and an adult, an atheist and a Jew, a black and a white or a girl and a woman should all be able to get married if both want to. Marriage is best served if legal ramifications are removed from the institution and if the ceremony and aftermath represent a social declaration of symbolic bonding that may dissipate one day, but won’t provide a public battlefield for divorce. Child protection is another matter, entirely separate. Parents need to be held legally responsible for their kids. Leave marriage out of it. Forget marriage licenses and require parenting licenses. If you have a kid without one, you’ll pay some big money toward the back-end consequences of really bad parenting. - TNP
