like many, i roll out the occasional choice phrase or utterance now and again.  i generally try to avoid doing this on soulcast blog entries, mainly b/c it violates adsense policies and i don't wanna screw up folks, either myself or others, by doing so.

what's your feeling about use of obscenities here on soulcast?  or for that matter, elsewhere?

well, I think obscenitites have their place....but sometimes get over used.

feel free to use them in any of my blogs.....I do not have an adsense account and don't intend to start one.

Though now that you mention it, I will try to be careful of my use of them in other people's blogs.

I think that when used sparingly, an obscenity can really drive a point home.  But in print, I try to disguise it with "special characters".  I think that's the e-version of saying Dang-it instead of the real thing.  I also think that overuse is crass and ignorant.

I do it. I admit it.

Sometimes I just need to curse.  Sorry.

I rarely use obscenities, even 'pretend' ones like frell, so when I do you know I mean it.

Honestly, they don't bother me.  But, I try to use them sparingly so that they have more impact when I do.  But, they have become so common that I think we tend to gloss over them even when people use them sparingly.

With the exception of any pieces of fiction that I may post here, I treat my blog and my commentaries as part of a public conversation. Since I rarely use hard obscenities in public unless in the sole company of close friends, I generally don't use them here.

Obscenity doesn't bother me by itself. What does matter to me, though, is the presence or absence of thought in a message. If the obscenity exists solely to express some strong form of emotion, then I have to conclude that the writer does not have the ability of clear self expression. It also suggests that the writer had not fully thought through the point that he or she is trying to make. That bothers me more than any bit of obscene flotsam or jetsam that one might post.

Oh I curse a lot in real life.

But when it comes to writing, I don't do that unless I was raging at the time of writing :/ Kinda funny, because in real life, i curse at anything :)

    Cheers!

I think you need to distinguish between cursing and using off color language - in an erotic story off color language can be appropriate and add to the story.  To comment on somebody's post or to use obsenity in any other context to me is out of place.

I could have said "fucking", but i was trying to be respectful....

I use language in my stories-
If I am comfortable and feel it won't offend, i sometimes will use it in my comments.

SL, I use language in my comments all the time. I find that SC doesn't support images so artwork just isn't an option for communicating my innermost thoughts and desires. Oh well. ;)

SL, do not ever give LJ an opening for a silly joke, because he will waltz right through it without a second thought.

I've been known to use a curse word or two.  Or ten.  Probably too many.  But I am very careful to be circumspect around certain family members.

It doesn't bother me unless it sounds like a contest to see how many times one can use the word f*** in a sentence.  I saw a movie a while back where every other word was f***, and it made me wonder if the screen writer needed a new thesaurus.

I try to stay away from using obscenities in my writing, though they do appear from time to time, esp. if I was strongly emotional at the time of the writing. I don't think that it's the end of the world to see a four-letter word worked into a blog or whatever, if it fits and is appropriate to the content, etc.

I do get offended when the cursing detracts from the writing, or feels like it degrades the conversation. If you can write effectively without it, why not do that?

When I'm angry IRL, though, I can give a sailor with Tourette's a run for his money. Whoops.

That was you spouting obscenities on my post,
right? I am not sure I get your denial of using
vulgarities on people's posts. Maybe that is why
my AdNonCents is zero for weeks now. Thanks a lot.
Oh well, I may unplug AdNothing anyway since it is
    a total joke.

Hi !silverwhisper, I think we should refrain from using obscene remarks and vocabulary in our blogs.
Of course you cannot help if you are discussing certain biological processes which are bound remain
incomplete without their usage. On the whole I fully agree with you on this issue.
  • queenparanoia said on Oct 27, 2006....
it's okay as long as it's not over use. hey we are adults here so its okay.
  • harriedpsychmajor said on Oct 27, 2006....
I think I share the general opinion here when I say I try to steer clear from the vulgarity. In debating, vulgarity tends to undermine a person's credibility by shifting focus from the topic to "whoa, you shouldn't say that." One can't even use being "edgy" to justify being profane considering that obscenities have saturated our collective vocabulary. The only real function I see is when it gets under a person's skin in a fiery, emotional argument. So for the most part I think it doesn't serve enough function to be used habitually.

I use it from time-to-time. I don't mind if others use it.

Depending upon what one is writing, sometimes it just fits in certain areas of a piece.
  • rhmagee said on Oct 28, 2006....
I think the use of obscenity is a sort of admissin of one's more rational failure. I came here under the impression this was sort of a religios based site am I worng? If I am right then I don't see where obscenities have a place in it!
  • silverwhisper said on Oct 30, 2006....
alienated: the reason i try to avoid using obscenity in other people's blogs is b/c if they're using adsense (and unfortunately, there's no way to know w/out asking), google will not pay if your blog has obscenity in it.  they're not real specific re: where you can/can't have it, but i don't wanna be the reason someone doesn't get their check from google, you know what i mean?

I acutally didnt know that with adsense... there really is no point. I just end up forgetting about it in the long run. I do use curses in blogs, but usually only when I am really upset about something to the point that my fingers have minds of their own. Most curses are adjectives, and why would someone take the time to type out an adjective that is useless unless the word is the only word strong enough to fully express the thoughts. I doubt I even really actually write the word on paper either. Takes too much time.
