With indemnity insurance you or your Employer will need to make payments on a set monthly premium to the Insurance provider. The benefit of this is you get the options of which doctor you want to use and where to get treatments. A lot of freedom comes with having Indemnity insurance such as the option to select a family Doctor that isn't covered under just any HMO insurance plan.
HMO Plans
With a typical HMO plan you basically choose a Primary Care Physician that is found within the plan network. Most of your health needs can be taken care of by your Primary Care Physician but sometimes the Doctor will need to refer you to a specialist before getting special care. The Specialist the Doctor refers you to must also be within the HMO Network. There are several different HMO plans offered.
The PPO Plan
The neat thing about PPO plans is you're not as limited as you are with a standard HMO Plan. You don't have to search around for a Physician within a network. No problems arise from using a PPO physician and then later on an HMO Specialist. No referrals are needed to see a specialist either. There are benefits that come from staying within the network of Physicians if you do decide to go with a PPO plan. Co-pays with PPO plans are generally higher than co-pays found with most HMO plans.
