I thought I would do 'my bit' for 'Post Something Saturday'.

As I sat on the sofa wrapping some presents for my sister's cats, I couldn't understand why the rats were acting so weird.

I had bought some little cat toys that were full of catnip.  One was a little bag that had the tail end of a cat hanging out of it.  Gosh, how I love to see those cats go mental with those toys.  Catnip is about the most powerful drug for a cat and they go crazy for it!

I took one of the toys back out the wrapping paper and Zappa was stood upright straining against the bars of his cage as if he couldn't get close enough to me.  I looked at the toy then back at Zappa.  I moved the toy closer to him and he was doing the Irish Jig by this time ha ha!  I put the toy right against the cage and he pushed his snout through the bars and grabbed for the toy!  I managed to pull it away from him but he was going mental.  I couldn't resist doing it again and again lol!  Aero was acting similar but not as much as my FatBoy Zappa.

It appears that catnip also works on rats ha ha!

    I had no idea it would have the same effect on rats.  You'll have to start calling it ratnip.  ;)

    I didn't know about rats...all I can tell you is most mint family plants have pleasure relationships with the animals that react to them.

    Weed = mint
    Catnip = mint
    Salvia = mint

    From the folk lore I have read it said to get rid of mice and rats to plant cat nip near your home.  Ideally I'm guessing cats are attracted and take care of your rodent issue.

    I'm currently expanding my indoor garden and doing worm farming...

    lol

    PC ar eyou sure that Zappa doesn't secretly think he is a cat? lol..that is too funny...imagine the hard time you would have catching them if they got a hold of one of those toys! lol

    Mr Strange - I didn't know that about mint.  Mind you, Zappa is getting so fat I think he could give a cat a run for its money lol!!  Worm farming eh - some may think it weird but I think that's facinating.

    Girly - i'm thinking of getting him some for Christmas now ha ha!

    rose - I think you and I must suffer from the same affliction hee hee!  I can smell the shoe department in a store from a 100 paces!

    You have a rat named Zappa?  I had a cat named Zappa until very recently...  She was a real beauty...  Didn't really care for catnip that much.
  • pusscat said 12 days ago....
    Oh wow Grape - a cat named Zappa!  So sorry to hear she's no longer with you.  My last cat, Harry, was mad for the stuff.  Could never replace him so that's why I didn't get another cat.

    My little nephew was allergic to cats, so we had to get rid of her...  :(

    I don't have a good picture of her to put up right now, but I will soon, so that you can see.  I had her for 12 years.  She was a good buddy.  A great companion.  I'll tell you more about her one day.   I miss her.

    Huh, now that's pretty neat, I would never have guessed it'd work that way too, lol.  That sounds so cute though PC, I could just totally picture that.
  • pusscat said 12 days ago....
    Oh Grape!! I totally understand you more than you could ever know.  My husband became allergic to Harry, no other cat just him.  Apparently it's the protein in any individual cat's saliva that people are allergic too and hubby is a severe asthmatic so my sister, 80 miles away adopted him for us.  Gosh I missed him so much.  He had to be put down 3 Christmases ago when he became so ill with a blood disorder.  The money my sister spent on the vet bills was amazing and they did do everything they could for him.  The vet went out of his way to get info from his fellow vets in Scotland!.  He is now at peace now though most likely driving my old dog, Rena insane lol!  i'd love to see your piccies of your little baby :-)

    Hege - hello you.  I thought you'd like this one as I know how crazy daft you are when it comes to animals lol!!  I'm hoping to get some videos of Zappa playing with a catnip toy ha ha!
