Who's reading cornflakegirl (33):
so yesterday i was on mcdougal street in nyc with my boyfriend, enjoying the beautiful weather and people-watching... and we noticed a camera crew filming a volkswagen commercial. we hung out and watched it for a while (although to be honest, it really wasn't that exciting. pretty much just consisted of a young couple crossing the street and going up a doorstep.) anyway, we ducked into a margarita bar, ordered some drinks, and sat outside to enjoy the beautiful day. i noticed a few people around me lighting up cigarettes so i lit one up as well. i had just finished mine when a waitress came outside to let us know that smoking is not permitted anywhere near the bar so everyone who was still smoking had to extinguish their cigarettes. okay, i know i'm a smoker so i'm not as bothered by the smoke as some people might be and i mean absolutely NO DISRESPECT to those that do in fact smoke, but the whole no smoking ban it seems is getting really out of control. i've already been kicked out of every bar in the tristate area. and now i can't even smoke OUTSIDE of those bars? i dunno, just bothers me. that's all for now. :)

I don't smoke so I appreciate the ban indoors. Outdoors, that's a whole 'nuther story. I think we will likely see more and more of this as smoking becomes more and more taboo.

How close were you to the entrance/exit to the bar? If you were puffing the smoke as people entered or exited, that's not cool!!

I'm not a smoker, but I have to agree that you shouldn't be limited in the places you can smoke. It seems that politicians today are cutting back our rights, including the right to smoke. What happened to free speech? Maybe I'm just a bit cynical about the whole system, but I agree that we are seeing less people smoking, because of legislation. If you want to smoke, you shouldn't be repressed!

I disagree starlight. There has to be some restriction when the rights of others are being infringed upon. There needs to be a balance between a smoker's right to smoke and a nonsmoker's right to not smoke.

successwarrior i agree with you. but pinkelephant, we were seated at the outdoor benches which were located several feet from the entrance to the bar. if i can't smoke indoors and need to go outside to enjoy a ciggy, then i want to enjoy that cigarette and not get treated like a second-class citizen. i think it's becoming a serious problem in this country and legislation is absolutely to blame. i'm not saying that cancer and 2nd-hand smoke aren't serious concerns, obviously i acknowledge them as such, but i have rights, too.

The last stats that I heard was that tobacco was the number one cause of premature death in the U.S. I guess something has to be #1 but I guess you would think it would be something where there is less control over the outcome like car accidents. That's why legislature is going to get tougher and tougher. Smoking is very expensive for this country.

That's messed up, homie! If you were several feet away from the entrance, why the hell would the waitress bother you guys? Smoking laws have gotten slightly out of control. Although I don't smoke, it's not right that those who do can't even go outside in the open air to enjoy a cig.

Think of it like this: Smoking is nothing less than assault. Smokers have no clue how offensive and ugly it is. Your smoke doesn't just stay around you, it permeates the air for up to a block. Now let's try a thought experiment. How would you feel if I carried around a squirt gun and just squirted you with water when you were around me. Pretty harmless. It's just water, right? Why complain about that when you probably get rained on more than that each year. Yet somehow people would see that as more offensive than lighting up a cigarette and sending the smoke my way. Cigarette smokers are at the bottom of the ladder when it comes to consideration for others.
