Executive coaching is a personal and professional growth process for mid- to senior-level executives. The executive receives one-on-one sessions to develop skills over an extended time period with a trained professional coach. High-potential managers can grow faster through coaching; new managers looking for a smooth job transition may also benefit, and mangers with a performance problem can often benefit from individualized training. Executive coaching allows the executive to explore the problems, attitudes, and behaviors that affect his or her career performance. When I coach an executive, I always look for what drives the person-in other words, what the top values are that define how this individual functions best. When we live from our values, we experience joy and success far greater than those who “go through the motions” or live by socially-accepted rules. Executive coaching can involve meetings, assessments, feedback from coworkers, and focused counseling on performance. As a coach, I adopt a wide variety of roles, including messenger, mentor, facilitator, and change catalyst. Defining values is part of the assessment stage for my clients. We go through an exercise that allows the executive to define his or her top values, and then incorporate them into a Personal Life Vision, which then becomes the blueprint for everything else. You can find this exercise in my new book, Soul Proprietorship: 8 Critical Steps for Overcoming Problems in Business and Life . In fact, the book covers all the key components that most executive coaches incorporate: assessment, feedback, action plan, action, measurement, and follow-up. In assessment, the coach identifies the problem and finds the best plan to resolve it in a measurable way. In feedback, the coach collects coworker opinions about the executive and relates them to the executive as constructive criticism. For the action plan, the coach asks the executive what actions he is willing to take and how he can help. During action, the coach discusses the executive’s most recent action toward accomplishing the goal, makes necessary changes, and suggests the next best step. In measurement, the coach and executive analyze the progress made so far. For follow-up, the coach and executive figure out how to continue progress without the coach’s presence. Whether you have a problem to solve, need to learn new skills to increase your effectiveness as an executive, or need a sounding board and a trusted confidante, executive coaching can provide what you are looking for.
