So far i have had two people ask me what the hell is in all the bowls! Great conversational pieces!

Well, can't you tell, those are onions! *smile*

This wonderful elderly lady i care for weekly, had her onions all waiting out for me to place through out her home. huh? ok.... She told me to get some bowls out and place one unpeeled onion in each room. ok? I did.

She was just smiling up a storm and told me i did good.... without questioning. lol.... Then she handed me a email from someone...her son got a copy of it. It was page after page of the healing that onions do!

It amazed me so i took notes and surfed for the website on onions redemies/healing. Sure enough i found the site. Anyway.... I have onions placed through out my own home. In Country Crocks bowls. *smile*

Here is some of the email........... In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this doctor that visited the farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu. Many of the farmers and their family has contracted it and many died.

The doctor came upon one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in the rooms.....

The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. .....he did.... the onion absorbed the flu virus....keeping the family healthy.

There are some other stories about how onions are healers and prevent flus. I say, like the rest.... i have nothing to lose but a buck or two. So, i took this to heart and now i have pretty little onions placed in each room.

You should check it out. You'll find it by asking about onion remedies. I would like to take this perfect moment and share a good easy recipe you can put into a bowl! *smile*

French Onion Soup

6 lg. red or yellow onions - peeled and thinly sliced

olvie oil

1/4 teaspoon of sugar

2 cloves garlic - minced

8 cups of beef broth/stock

1/2 cup of dry vermouth or dry white wine

1 bay leaf

1/4 teaspoon of dry thyme

salt and pepper

8 slices of toasted french bread

1 1/2 cups of grated swiss gruyere with alittle grated parmesan cheese

In a lg. saucepan saute' the onions in the olvie oil on med. high till well browned. ...about half-browned add sugar to help carmelization.

add garlic and saute' a minute or two. add stock, vermouth or wine, bay leaf, and thyme. cover partially and simmer for about 30 minutes. discard bay leaf and salt/pepper to touch.

to serve you can either use individual oven-proof soup bowls or lg. casserole dish. ....cover with toast and sprinkle with chesses. put into broiler/350 degrees for 10 minutes till cheese bubbles and is slightly browned. serve immediately.

You can stop your crying now!  This is the end of this post!   *smile*

I never heard of this before, but it sure beats getting sick or the side-effects of a lot of medications.  Add some garlic and you'll be safe from vampires, too ;)
  • Hegemone said on Nov 03, 2009....
Too cool MMI.  Considering how yucky this household has been feeling, I might just stop and get some onions at the store tomorrow ... and since we're all sick anyway ... soup is the perfect aid for it, so hey, double onion whammy!

    MMI,
I remember my grandfather used to slice onions into thin slices and sugar them in a bowl. The fluid that came out was given to us when we had a cold.
Usally three tablespoons per day was what we got, one per meal.

I also remember he would warm up water and add some honey for us to drink...
Was very sweet but it helped keep the cold away.

When we had some serious coughing he used to use Thyme and do a tea from that. (with honey if you prefer that)

When we had a sore throat he gave us vanlilla ice cream.. Home made mostly. :d

He could also give is cumin to swallow whole, with a glass of water.

Thats all I can recall right on top of my head.

Wishy ~ that's what i thought! lol... maybe that's where the old garlic and onion necklaces started.... keeps demon/illness at bay! *smile*

Hegemone ~ at the website, there was this boy who was running a fever. they sliced an onion and put it on the bottom of his feet, put cotton white socks over/on his feet, sent him to bed. in the morning, the fever was gone! too cool!........this is when we need those "scented socks" that Infernal was talking about! *smile*

Voltaire ~ that was too cool. i''ll try the onion, sugar and water thingie if or when i get down with a cold. Thyme is an excellent exportant, antispasmodic and antibacterial. it's in our cough medicines and i have a ....recipe for making an inhaler out of it, using steam. anytime is a good time for ice cream! *smile*

Well you all have a great day! ....oh, is it friday yet?!? shoot, nope, it's just hump day! take care ~see ya

hey, i'm making french onion soup in my cafe world on facebook :-D
  • CayenneMan said on Nov 04, 2009....
Hello Me-Myself&I, I don't know much about onions but I do know some of the men at my gym often eat raw onions to help eliminate fluids before a photo shoot . They claim fluid retention conceals muscle definition. I don't know if that's true but that's what they practice. When I think about it, it kind of makes sense. Just like when you're eyes begin to tear from a freshly cut onion. I will look into onion remedies as you have suggested. I love French onion soup. I love the taste of the crisp cheese dripping over the top of the crock bowl it's served in.  Those bowls can be mighty hot, maybe you know what I mean. Well little lady, I guess you know what I'll probably have for an appetizer tonight :o) ? Thank's for the recipe, one day I'll give it a try. Have a nice day, it's chilly here and the wind doesn't help, I even thought about firing up my patio heater while I soak in the sun.

I've always said that garlic and onions are basis to all good food.  All great cooking has to incorporate those two items otherwise, it's not as good.

    Just saying is all.

My dad has a bunch of onions soaking in red wine and he'll drink a little glass of it every day.

Can't really do French onion soup, though.  I have a childhood trauma associated with it.
  • Voltaire said on Nov 04, 2009....
    MMI,
Sure do it, I've used all of them and for me they work.
