Understand SEO is written for the many people out there that have a vague idea that it exists but little knowledge of how valuable it. We’ve all been in that boat before so nothing to be ashamed about. The main this is are you willing to learn or do you hope that if you carry on making nothing online that one day something will change and you’ll start making money?
A man, much wiser than I, once said to me: “The definition of insanity is to do exactly the same thing again and expect a different outcome.”
Reminding myself of that statement is part of my daily routine and has been for more than twenty years.
Business is a matter of trial and error and if there is a secret to being successful in business it is being able to drop what doesn’t work quickly and being able to channel your resources at what does work. Nobody needs the mind of Einstein to understand the logic of that statement. It is plain, simple and accurate.
Are you aware that out of every 100 people that decide to become an internet affiliate marketer only 5 will actually make money? Yet each day half a dozen or more can’t fail formulas for successful internet marketing arrives in our inbox. If all of these formulas are so good how come only 5% are succeeding?
It isn’t because all of the people sending you these emails are crooked, although we accept that some of them are. Most of the people that send these emails have genuinely achieved a degree of success in affiliate marketing. The problem is that most of them don’t have a clue about communications and passing on knowledge to others. They have a tendency to skip over important issues because they understand them fully and assume that you will too.
Know we’ll start to understand SEO or search engine optimization to give it the full title. The discipline of SEO is placing a given webpage (hopefully your sales page) high in the search listing of major search engines. For instance your keyword is: “Buy golf clubs” and ideally you want your web page to be listed on the first page of Google or one of the other major search engines. By doing this you will receive thousands of free visitors to your website when they enter the search term “buy golf clubs.” The problem is that if you do a Google on buy golf clubs you will find that many millions of web pages are your competitors.
How do you get your web page for this search term onto the first page of Google, Yahoo or Bing (Formerly MSN)? To do so your web page has to be considered an authority page on the subject and search engine optimization is all about making a page into an authority page on any given subject.
There are a lot of businesses online that will get your page where you want it to be by using what is known as Black Hat Tactics. This may appear to be fine at first but as soon as the search engines realize that black hat has been used they will penalise your web page - maybe 1,000 places in the search. Always remember that people online rarely search beyond the first page of the search engine and never, ever, search down 1,000 pages. Therefore you can’t afford to be penalised if you wish to remain in business.
Each of the search engines publishes instructions on how to promote your web page(s) and if you follow these instructions your web page will become an authority page on the subject. This is called White Hat Tactics and will never get you in trouble with the search engines.
Imagine that you are an online affiliate marketer and are earning $30 for each sale that you make: If the traffic you attract is free from the search engines each time you make a sale you will receive $30 profit. If you are using pay per click advertising you could be paying $25 in advertising fees per sale leaving you only $5 profit. Which system makes more sense for your business?
Either take the trouble to understand seo for your website promotion or speak to a professional and see whether you can afford to have it done for you while you learn. Free website traffic is more important to online success than any other form of marketing.
