If you take postgraduate education, either an MA or a PhD, you will be required to write a proposal laying out what you plan to do in your dissertation. Writing a proposal for a PhD is much more complicated and involved than an MA proposal because you may be trying to sell your ideas to get funding for your doctoral degree. The MA proposal is similar in structure to a proposal for a doctorate, but it's less detailed.

Things to Include in Your Proposal

It's generally expected that you'll have reviewed at least some of the literature on the subject you plan to write on for your dissertation, and you'll have to show this in the proposal.

A proposal usually starts with your thesis statement, i.e., "Women Are Still Second Class Citizens, Despite the Rise of Feminism", a thesis statement like this would require some knowledge of the background literature and how your dissertation takes the argument or the research forward. You will need to describe exactly how you plan on going about your dissertation this will include any research methods you will be using, e.g., questionnaires, interviews or documentary research.

You will need to give a detailed timeline and an expected finish date. Very often this changes over time, so don't worry too much about it, just give estimates as in the following example of a timeline for one year:

1. Weeks 1-12: desk research and expanded literature review
2. Week 13: design of questionnaire (just a supposition here)
3. Weeks 14 and 15: pilot questionnaire
4. Weeks 16-19: put pilot results through a statistical package and analyze. Examine respondents' answers to questions and read just the questionnaire. Questionnaires almost always need adjusting after a pilot study because of the way people read and understand certain questions differently.
5. Weeks 20-24: administer questionnaires and enter into computer data base for analysis.
6. Weeks 25-52: further analysis of questionnaires and writing up the dissertation.

Remember, this is only an estimated time line, different colleges have different rules regarding the time a project should take and how long a student should have for writing their dissertation. If your initial proposal is sent back to you for amendments, as is often the case, you will need to go through it to see where the weaknesses are and what you might have missed adding to the proposal.

Writing a proposal and thinking the whole project through even before you have started on the project may seem like a daunting project but it's good training and helps you to place a structure on your work because you only have a limited time in which to do it.

Using Your Supervisor

When you start on your dissertation you will be assigned a supervisor. If you're an independent student trying to get funding for your PhD, you may need to find someone yourself to begin with. You should make as much use as you can of your tutorials with your supervisor. He or she will know what they are talking about because at some time in the past they will have written and presented a formal dissertation proposal as well.

If you follow the tips outlined here you should find that it makes starting and structuring your dissertation proposal a lot more straight forward.
