A couple of months ago,I was approached by one of my old muso buddies, who asked me if I was interested in an ambitious little project that he had been researching. So I asked him about it,and after hearing what it was I actually thought that he was kidding - but then that look on his face told me otherwise.
So sheepishly I agreed, and left our little meeting shaking my head with a grin on my face.He had asked me to see how many of my other muso buddies I could speak to,to 'recruit' into this little venture. So I put the word out and got a reasonable response. The next thing I knew, one of the resturant owners, who was a muso himself found out about it,and he put an ad in the local paper - looking for guitarists.
The little venture that had been dreamed up was to attack the Guiness world record for the number of guitarits playing the same song at the same time. The existing record - yes they have records for this type of thing - is held by a group in Germany - Deep Purple 'Smoke on the water' - 1807 people at the same time.
Needless to say the big day arrived - and we were only able to amass about 1500 people,so the record attempt was out,but we all played anyway, and a lot of fun was had by all. There were people of all ages from 7 to about 80,by the look of things.
That night,a group of us were invited to play at the Durban International Blues Festival, that was in town at the time. That was rather interesting to say the least. One of the 'guests' who is actually a regular was Dan Patlansky, from Canada. We played for about an hour and half towards the end of the night.I got to do the Back to the Future,Marty McFly 'Johnny B Good' impersonation, which was a lot of fun.A bit of Muddy Waters,George Thoroughgood, some Gary Moore amongst others.I was conned into particapating in a 'extended' version of 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Parissiene Walkways' - try 2 drummers,2 bass players,4 guitarist and 3 keyboards, and you might have the idea - but it was good fun though.I did feel a bit like burnt toast the next day though, and my fingers were not in such good shape.
I also managed to get involved in another record attempt on the same stretch of beach that same afternoon. For the first time in about 20 years,I found myself on a surf board........balance is a wonderful thing,if you have any that is.The record attempt? wait for it....the number of people on the SAME wave at the SAME time in a STRAIGHT line - I know, they have records for everything these days. The existing record for this is 100 - There were 400 odd of us there, and so we knew it was possible.About 20 or so attempts later, and a few broken boards and broken bones, from guys getting too close to the shore and landing on rocks, head first - we did it.
104 people on the same wave at the same time in a straight line......
I wonder whats next on the record list?
