Who's reading curmudgeon (60):
I am thinking about donating my body for scientific research.

That way, if I wind up dying having done nothing huge to help anyone, at least I will have helped someone learn to save a life, or get closer to learning how to save a life, or something.

That is, until someone pointed out that my body might wind up being unacceptable for research.

Guess that means I have to do something useful!

Curmudgeoun, if you have a chance to get your hands on a book titled "Cadaver, the Curious Lives of Stiffs"...or maybe "...The Curious Life of a Stiff,"  grab it. It tends to make you rethink the noble thought of leaving your body to science.

In one chapter the woman author describes a plastic surgeons' workshop attended by a couple dozen surgeons. Before they arrive at the lab their stations are set up with human heads on enamel trays. The heads, of course, originally belonged to people who had willed their bodies to science. Someone's making a buck holding the workshop. The surgeons nip and tuck and suction and sew and so forth and it gets grimmer and grimmer as you read.

Funny, though. The author takes a light approach. I loved it.

Would you really be that generous with your remains? Ewwww

Hahaha! Sounds like a fun read! :P

And I want them to burn my body and throw my ashes into the sea. Not that I'm into Hinduism or Buddhism... I'm an Atheist in fact. But yeah, I'd rather have my body turn into ashes than become maggot-food.

I heard of a new process in which the body is liquified and then poured down the drain. That would be fine with me.

Frankly, I would much rather my next of kin be able to sell my body, internal organs and all. As yoopermary points out, the plastic surgeons will eventually make money from the knowledge they glean from me, the medical device companies, insurance companies, pharma companies all will get their paychecks, but in death I am the one who has to be altruistic.

I think you can still pick the university to which you wish to donate. If I die from say liver cancer I would probably be inclined to donate my body for cancer research.

If it can be of any use then donating my organs for the organ donor programme. If not then to medical science. After that then cremation.

I don't have enough faith in science or its ability to help people to do that. I just wanna be cremated and scattered in the wind so as not to waste any more precious land.

I'd like to walk out into the hills near my city, and when I'm ready to die I will sit down and curl up under a bush, hidden from view, and expire in peace.  I don't mind what creatures nibble my toes when I am gone.
Dad told me that animals in the wild sometimes wander away when they know it is time to go.
It should be as peaceful as possible for everyone.
I wouldn't like to be kept prisoner in a hospital or aged care home with ignorant and aggressive health-care workers attending to my feeble needs.  It has to be natural and peaceful.

That's a beautiful thought, Trevorz, expiring in a remote natural setting and to have your body dispatched by crows or whatever.

    I wonder the following;

If, towards the end, you're in so much pain that you hasten the process with a handful of barbiturates, do the crows or whoever nibble you get a toxic dose?

I had a little dog put to sleep in the dead of winter when there was no hope of digging a hole. I carried  her body deep into the woods for hungry scavengers. But when I asked the vet if scavengers would be poisoned from the little carcass she hesitated for a few seconds and said "Y'know, I've never been asked that question before. I don't know the answer."

    Does anyone? Just curious.

I suppose the scavenger would have to eat the liver when it is quite fresh to get a toxic dose from the barbies? If the liver is cut out and disposed of before disposal I reckon it's gonna be all right, but most people are sqeamish, heh? Also, if the animal's death comes quickly from the drug, there is bound to be residue in the blood - I think it deteriorates quickly and rapidly loses strength upon death. Just to make sure, keep the loved one in a safe place after expiration before rural disposal. Another thought, who says animals don't enjoy drugs, even if they are bad for them? They are such jolly fun for humans, why wouldn't animals like them. My cat always jumped onto my lap when I get the bong out, so did the rabbit! They seemed to crave second-hand dope smoke.
