We all are about to get into the crouch posture. Our shoulders all hunched over with our heads tucked down. Just going through the cold gloomy days of winter is enough to shiver and shake without having the chills of the common cold or flu.

Let the plants/herbs of this Earth help you to combat this season coming up....it's coming real fast like too!

First of all, try some salt solutions instead nasal sprays. Just 1/2 teaspoon of table or sea salt in warm water, mix and put in a spray bottle or dropper bottle. Works like a charm. .... gargling each morning can stop thoat problems too.

Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is an excellent expectorant.

Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) is great too for loosing up the congestion. I grow this myself. I pinch of a few leaves off, put into a pot to boil. I grab my towel and cover my head and pot, inhaling the steam with the Horehound in it. Oh, the relief! I need to right now too!

Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea, E. angustifolia) never under-estimate the power of this herb. It stimulates white blood cells and helps the immune cells to destory invading microbes!

Asian Ginseng (Panax ginseng) and Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus)  both of these very strong herbs can boost and rebuild your immune system. Be Careful with these herbs, they can raise your blood pressure.

Garlic is benefical in so many ways. It "kills" a wide range of microbes. Start using more garlic in your daily cooking!

Here is a wonderful blend of herbs the can help you feel better AND fight viruses and bacteria.
Blend all the herbs together and store in an air-tight container, out of heat and light.

1/4 cup dried peppermint leaves
1/4 cup dried lemon balm leaves
1/4 cup dried elder flowers
1/4 cup dried yarrow flowers..................... health stores have these herbs. OR come see me! *smile*
To make a cup of tea........
1 cup of water
1/2 teaspoons tea blend
1/2-1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
Honey
Lemon jucie
the last 3 is optional.....boil water, remove from heat, add tea blend. The ginger is to chase away the chills plus adds a touch of sweetest. Steep for 10 minutes, strain and add honey and/or lemon juice.

I could go on and on with this and that to help a wide range of health problems or using certain ones to prevent the start of problems. I have a load of notes, but i thought these here were the best for the coming season.

OH! I forgot the most important ones..... ;~) Don't leave home without taking your vitamin C and Zinc! ....one more thing, no matter how cold it gets.... let fresh air into your homes once in awhile, it helps alot. We all are shut up for so long that you are breathing dead air filled with germs, replenish with good fresh air. *smile*

I hope each and everyone of you stay healthy and happy! It's getting to close to the holidays to get sick! *smile* xo take care ~see ya

Hey, I read that first line or two and thought you were on a tornado alert there!  But, then I read on and thought you had some great advice and recipes for taking care of yourself with natural remedies.  I don't like taking medications of any kind, and I should be more into things like this.  I doubt if I could grow anything like you do, but it would be nice.

I really like the tip for fresh air!  I hate the stale air and being shut up.  I would keep a window open if hubby would allow it, but can only fan the door a few times when he's not home.

I might try some of that "vulgar horehound", though!  (tee-hee...)

Now you've got me laughing, and I have to be quiet as hubby is napping in his lounge chair---here in the stale air.....

I just couldn't resist the jab at the horehound herb thingy.  Made me think of a guy I used to date.  I think I wrote a post about him once.  It was about the horn dog I knew!

    5 seconds left.....ha......

I just went perusing down my posts path, looking for the one I mentioned writing about the "horn dog" but couldn't find it.  Maybe I overlooked it, or deleted it, but it was fun looking at all my old titles.

I hope you have gotten hold of yourself now and don't pee your pants or anything.  (Or else...give me some 'o that!  Ha.......)

I like herbs, but I prefer essential oils.  Tea Tree and Lavender oils are my favorite to have on hand.

Got a nerve tonic to recommend?  Seriously.

M&M........did i ever tell you that i applied to the University of Urbino in Italy to get a degree in  pharmaceutical herbology?

Only problem i was working out of town that summer so didnt get back in time to fill all the applications. It was the only colllege offering those classes and they were with a very small numbered of openings so they filled out immediately and i didnt get in.

Instead a friend of mine did it and after 4 years she opened the very first herbs shop in my city....still doing great after all these years..

Anytime i go back to Italy i go to visit her and i wonder...what if i did get in?

I would be behind that counter right now....funny thought, uh?...;-)
  • wombat said on Oct 29, 2009....

(I work with herbs all day, and can note that mint, lemon thyme and basil make me feel better, while sage feels good but makes me itch, and cilantro just stinks like cow pee.)

But "Ginger" behind the counter would always have been a nice OTC drug!"

CW ~  to tell the truth, i believe in Kava-Kava (piper methysticum) it's a south pacific root that calms and takes the edge off your nerves. there are folks who consume kava as a beverage. low doses gives who a sense of peace. it can relax tight muscles and pain. there is a warning label on kava, don't drive machinery till you check out how it affects you! see, how powerful it is.

Ginger ~ that would be great to work a store featuring the old remedies! i read passion is your words about this. huh....maybe you should look into it again.  not a bad idea for me neither!  :~)

    MMI,
I tried Kava Kava several years ago, but it caused my underarms to break out and itch.  So, I gave up on that.   I know.  My body chemistry is goofy.

Thanks for these tips and all the info MMI!  Lol, I had garlic noodles for dinner tonight, so I suppose I'm good on that at least.  Also, that reminds me, I need to take my vitamin C.  I might take two, lol ... husband's coming down with a cold.  Hmm, might have to see what else I can apply to him now.  Thank you again.  :-D
