I'm sitting here at work and now I have somehow acquired two candy bowls!!!  I swear, I'm in hell. lol

From time to time people will ask me what I do for a living.  I usually tell them I'm "just" a secretary or if I feel fancy an administrative assistant.  I find it entertaining when people feel the need to defend my job by telling me just how important a secretary is, as if somehow I will feel better about my job.

I do like what I do.  It does involve some skills.  Obviously people who do my job can run the gamut of "what the hell?!" to "she walks on water" with experience and skills.  There are college degrees and certificate programs now for being support staff. (another important sounding way to describe what I do)  I think I fall somewhere in between both extremes and I've learned all my skills through the school of hard knocks.

So what does this have to do with my multiplying candy problem?

The other way I describe my job to people is "office mom".  While any person can be a secretary, it takes a person with some highly developed people skills to achieve office mom status.  You must learn to walk the fine line between realizing that you do report to other people and not shirking from the task of letting even the boss know he's a putz.

For me it involves medical consults (take this sudafed before you make all of us sick!), personal trainer (did you take the elevator instead of the stairs?!!), advice columnist (plan on sleeping on the couch if THAT is your wife's anniversary present!) and nutritionist (give me your bowl of candy before you self implode!).

All in all I am "mom" to seven people.  I know their spouses names, how many children they have and in which grades, their birthdays and what their favorite candies are.  All this for the bargain basement price of a secretary.

So I don't save lives (at least directly), design rocket ships or affect public government policy ...... anyone can do THAT kind of stuff.  I make a difference in the tone of the lives of 7 people.  I figure with the ripple effect I touch the lives of at least 50 people daily.

However, it's not going to help me with this candy problem :)

Trick or Treat is going to be fun for you!

mixed - I'm planning to take home all the candy that's left at the end of the week (assuming there is any) and treat the little neighborhood buggers!

This is such a good post. You do make a difference in a lot of people's lives, and that shouldn't be underestimated.   I'm going to take it to heart.  I don't earn a salary, or have a big fancy title, but that doesn't mean that I don't have worthwhile contributions to make.  I hope.

MMM - your impact on the world cannot be measured by how important your job sounds or even how much money you make.  I know for sure that you do have an impact on the lives of those around you.
  • Lucytorial said on Oct 28, 2009....
You know it always irks me that people ask "so what do you do" as though they can guage you as a person by what your roll is professionally/nonprofessionaly.

We all have our place in life, we all are important and not just for what we do as a damn job.  It is the essence of who we are and how we behave that is telling in how to judge us if we must be judged.

You are a mom, caring, you show those nurtering qualities not just in your job but as a human being.  Thats the fun part about who you are, mom, sister, lover, playmate.... many many things.

Lu - I get a kick out of people who assume that because I did not finish college that I have not developed certain social skills associated with wealth and higher education.  But yes, I am not defined by a job title, or limited by it either.

That's a pretty neat way of looking at things Uni, and I mean, what's not to love?  Oh wait, that candy bowl ... right.  Lol.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 28, 2009....
Hege - there are other things I'd rather do for a living, but until an international coffee bean buyer position opens up ..... :)
  • Lucytorial said on Oct 28, 2009....
Ohh yeh, how about the travel food writer position?
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 28, 2009....
I'd be open to discussing that! ;)  I've also got a bead on the belgian chocolate taster position.
  • gingersoul said on Oct 28, 2009....
U-nee-k...sorry..both positions have already been filled by me...long time ago...:-)
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 28, 2009....
    ginger - I think you're due for a new job ..... right?! ;)
  • sweetsoul said on Oct 28, 2009....
If I may be so bold to suggest a reason why they tell you that your job as a secretary is important, it is because unfortunately too many people don't think it is...and the fact that they know this to be the case and that it's so far off base...they want to let you know that they know the truth about things.  Businesses can't exist without secretaries. We all know the joke about who gets missed more when they're off for a day - the boss or the secretary!

It's as much to let you know they're 'on your side' as it is to make you feel good about your job.

And I like your take on the importance of your job. :)
  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 28, 2009....
sweetsoul - without a doubt, when I take a day off more gets "missed" than when the boss is out! lol

I am retired, but my wife has the same job as you to 7 people in a very small firm and when she started there 10 years ago they gave her the grand title of office manager. But just as you, it's general dogsbody, does everything, keeps tabs on birthdays, anniversaries, travel, etc. for all there including all of their offspring.

Now let me say from the bottom of my heart, and I know from what my wife's bosses have told me, she and you are the type of people that are the heart and soul of small and large businesses, without you they would not be able to cope as they do, and though sometimes they neither say or show it, you are invaluable to them. So just carry on what you are doing because YOU do make a big difference in their lives and will always be remembered in their hearts and minds.

    Pass the bowl around.

Secretaries are the glue of the office.  :-)  They hold everything together.

star - I'm glad you do.  It's a lot like raising toddlers ;)

CW - We are inviting the employees to bring their children in to trick or treat today.  Hopefully that will empty out the candy bowls.

It takes all kinds, as you know.  Only a special person can achieve that status.  With time...a good secretary can become the backbone of a company, dept. or organization.
It really is an honored position and it's really just like life, it's what you make of it.  I'm surprised there isn't (as far as I know) a master's degree available for secretary work.

  • uniquely-ironic said on Oct 29, 2009....
RC - unfortunately the closest they come to a masters degree in colleges is one in psychology.  The heart of being good at this job is understanding the people you work with.

Today is T day at work....
Leavin' work now ......
Wow, it's Thursday and I haven't, as of yet, gotten past my Monday passive/aggressive mentality...sigh. Thursday, it can't be past three pm on Monday. I just recently returned from leave and the whole mentality of being at work can be described as being...
I suppose, anyway, just quit looking at my coffee ... that'll get you into trouble and you don't want trouble....
As many of you know, I send little packages out to different people....
