A woman in Texas was given a ticket for not understanding English when pulled over by a Texas officer. There is such a law on the books but it applies to commercial drivers only. They thought this to be a rookie mistake but found 39 more tickets like this written. But what I want to know is Why would you want to drive in a country where you don't understand the standard use of language so you wouldn't understand the signs nor the rules of the road? And should there be a law on the books inregards to this?

I've even heard of certain states having an english and spanish version of the test, which to me is stupid b/c all road signs are written in ENGLISH and if you don't understand what your reading you may hurt yourself, others,or even kill someone.

Hi! just before i turned this thing on, i was talking about all the double standards in America. this is one more on the list. if you are in America, then do as the Americans do. period!

    oh lordy!

you have folks who have a certain religion and they don't have to pay taxes or even can have muti-marriages.

folks who aren't Americans, who work here and school here, get things that an American can't get. no taxes, free lunches.....

sorry that i got off topic, i quess it's all based on one thing .... i feel like the foreigner here in my own country! things are getting real screwed up, not getting better by any means! it's getting scary.

You know, that is a good point, that the signs are all in English, so why offer the other version of the test?  I can see too that if you can't even read or speak the language, how can you properly read the rules of the road and know what's right/wrong?  You probably can't without simple common sense, but then within that, laws are so different in so many different places that common sense based in one area might be completely backwards from another.  You've got to be able to read and know the laws and rules.

As far as driving in a country where you don't know the language....why have international drivers licenses available then?
One can get an international drivers license that allows you to drive in practically any country (for a specified amount of time) but it's up to you to get familiar with the road signs.
True that when you immigrate to another country (for whatever reason) one has to learn a new language and new ways and culture...but when massive amounts of people do it and then generally live close enough together (like in the same county or city) then they start imposing their old ways again.
There are certain parts of Miami where you can go all day and not hear a word of English unless it's from a Radio or TV station.
It's like living in another country without having to travel  there.

Lord knows I am no apologist for immigrants here that cannot speak English, but most of the road signs are recognizable by shape and the numbers (like speed limit) are common to English and Spanish readers. So I think most can navigate without speaking English. They might miss their turn to the airport (aeropuerto, no?). If you think about it, stop signs, traffic signals (no words there, just red, yellow, and green), and speed limits are about all that influence our driving.

All that said, if I was a cop and stopped someone that did not speak English ... at all ... I might ask for a passport. If they had none, I would haul them in. You have to be able to speak English to be an American citizen, right? That is the law that should not be ignored. I do not think anyone should be harrassed for the way they look, but we live in times that are too dangerous not to suspect people who fit a certain set of profiles. Unless the officer speaks Spanish, he / she could be speaking with a Muslim terrorist that does not speak English and just sneaked into the country through our very, very unsecure southern border. I am sure the people that died in the 9/11 attacks would feel that our security was a bit too lax in order to apease the politically correct.

I actually read that in the sunday papers, it stated the fucktard officer gave tickets out for purely non english speaking people.  Ahhh only in America ....

not sure if you guys are aware translations are provided to all non english speaking peoples... doesn't make them dangerous, doesn't make them smoochers and it certainly doesn't make them fucking terrorists...

If you speak or do not speak,
has nothing to do with driving.

I hope the guy drew a middle finger and pointed smiling at it...

I bet the cop would understand that.

    ...lol...

now I have a new idea,
in my getting arrested for breaking no law scheme.
