So,
i go out to hire a couple of drivers for a contract i won with the government, now lets be clear, the guys i have hired since i started this business 12 years ago are all still with me, i treat my employees pretty good and pay them a decent wage and give them a pretty good benefit package. so i have a couple of extra medics that i have been hanging onto, mainly because they are good employees and i hate letting anyone go, so with the new contract and the extra medics, i only needed to hire drivers, so i placed the add, and did the interviews on thursday
1st guy shows up, dirty, in jeans and crappy t-shirt, sorry not interested
2nd guy shows up, vocabulary consists of "yep" and has no resume with him, sorry again not intersted
3 guy shows up, dressed ok, somewhat intelligent, then we get into his driving record, he has an impaired driving cause bodily harm convixction, another impaired driving and a driving with out liscense and insurance charge
so i say sorry, my insurance company wont touch you, and you wont pass the security requirements for DHS for the contract
now put this in perspective, 18 bucks an hour, 50 hours a week, with OT, benefits after 3 months fully paid by me, pension after a year, fully paid by me, bonus of 3k a year based on safety and attendance
so friday morning i get a call from the human rights commission, apparently regardless of my insurance or the contract requirements i am discrimanating agaisnt the boozehound because he has a disability, i explained to the clerk that it was beyond my control and she actually suggested i hire him and just make a job for him, sorry once is a mistake, twice is a lack of responsibility three times is a fucking habit, the fouth time is is sheer stupidity, so i am supposed to risk everything i have built over 12 years so this idiot can drive for me....no fucking way
i have an appointment at the human rights commission to explain myself this coming monday
sometimes i wonder if it is fucking worth it
