So in the Tropical forests of North Queensland and Papua New Guinea there lives a strange beast.

A bird of feather with no wings, it cannot fly, has a horn like a rhino and claws like a lion.

Its neck is irrudescent blue and the male cares for the eggs and chicks whilst the female flaunts herself in the forest eating and gorging herself.

The male is very protective of its chicks and has been known to gut men from pelvis to sternim with the greatest of ease whilst head butting its weary victims with its great horn.

They are extremely endangered, due in no small part to us humans, taking away their forests and putting roads through their walking areas.

The cassowary eats a few different types of seeds that will only germinate if they have passed through the cassowary's gut.  I other words, the rainforest itself relies on the Cassowary to be a rainforest.

The southern Cassowary stands at the tallest 5 feet, some male cassowary's have been known to stand over 6 feet tall.  Quite formidable considering their frightful look.

They exist in very small pockets in Northern Queensland, their numbers in New Guinea are stronger yet as they are an ellusive animal it is very difficultto study them.  Unfortunately mostare studied after death from being hit by drivers going to fast in Cassowary zones.

Here are some pics of the amazing Cassowary.  Comments welcome.

Rather striking isn't he?

Their feathers are very strange, more like sheaths than feathers.  They still have wing buds but no wings to speak of and these birds are a completely different genus to the humble Ostritch or Emu.

Doing the fatherly thing, as I said the males take care of the chicks... aren't they cute (until they grow up of course)

Oh Lucy what an amazing post!!  Hubby and I were only watching a documentary about this amazing, beautiful bird the other week!  We've seen it a few times but this programme went into so much more detail!

Something in the living world that hardly anyone has heard of or knows about yet, if it were to disappear, those very same people would soon notice the catastrophic effect its disappearance had.  I'm so glad you posted its majectic picture here.

Thanks Puss, I do love the area I live in which includes many animals that MAKE the rainforest.

Its true, certain tracts of land are losing rainforest because humans are putting in roads where the Cassowary cannot get to its food, so it can't drop the seeds the forest needs to regenerate..

    So glad you watched a doco on them :-}

There was one at the animal sanctuary we visited.  I remember being very impressed with how capable it looked to defend it's self and chicks.  Too bad you don't have a pic of that road sign.  Hmmm lemme go look at my pics.

What a downright neat looking bird Lu.  The colors are quite striking also, I had no idea about this bird.  Thank you for the interesting and educational post.

Thanks, Luce - what a neat looking creature!  The babies are cute, but Dad is certainly a little intimidating.

This reminds me of the angry swans near my old university in NY - I would walk near the pond sometimes, and if you got too close to the nesting area, the big swans would let you have it.  They can really be kind of scary when they spread their wings!

YAY Wishy you made it! Swans can be pretty intimidating, mind you Geese are worse. LOL
