If you go to catch a movie in a cinema hall you may be asked to leave your mobile phone at the counter before entering the hall. Bag checks have been made compulsory in a number of cinema halls in the UK to seize mobile phones before the shows. This is a step taken to prevent the usage of mobile phones for movie piracy. Last week I went to view a latest movie in Leicester Square with some of my friends and we were not allowed to carry our mobile phones with us inside the hall. We had to leave our phones in a bag provided to us and surrendered at the counter.
People use mobile phones to capture a movie from the theatres and release it online illegally. Hence, this has been taken as a necessary step against piracy on demand from the film industry.
With the rapid development in the mobile phone technology, mobile phones with advanced features and greater capacities are being launched in the market. Taking advantage of the current Megapixel phones available with memory slots up to 64 GB storage capacity, one can capture the whole film with the help of this phone. As a result even some of the biggest films have been badly affected in the market due to pre-release piracy.
Though I respect the views and the actions taken to control piracy, still I feel that this kind of restriction may not prove to be fruitful and adequate enough to control film piracy because I believe that piracy is mostly done with camcorders. I’ve also seen people arguing outside the movie hall about the safety of their mobile handsets that has to be left for two to three hours. Several reasons have been cited by them while expressing their inconvenience against such act. One such inconvenience I experienced was when I could not receive an emergency call on my mobile during the show. The question of security of the data stored in the mobiles is another reason behind such objection. Risk involved in such act like important data loss and misuse of data is also a prime concern of the people depositing their mobiles at the counter. The issue has become very sensitive as the exhibitors are arguing in favour of this step by claiming that the mobile phones deposited by the audience are kept and handled only by the professional security staff with great care and under strict supervision.
