So a lot of us have noticed the recent oh, what shall we call it ... crap ... going on lately with SC.

Spam out the wazoo ... annoying drones set out to pull attention to more spam, themselves or who knows what ... and apparently now plagiarism.  I just wonder how much of that last thing there really is on this site that we might not know about.

I have to admit, it sort of feels that ever since the AdSense stuff was removed, Mr. or Ms. or Mrs. or just SoulCast ... you have sort of left us all to our own devices.  The above mentioned is running amok and we're all sitting ducks.  I understand that you, or those of you who run the site, may be busy with your own lives and heck, maybe you can't afford to run the site any longer so you're letting it dwindle away by neglect.

A lot of us really love this site though.  We think of it as home.  We have so much time, emotion and so much more invested here.  It would be a shame for us all to have to hold on by our nails as we watch it slowly deteriorate and disappear, whether that be via a complete shut down or spammers and rude people taking over.

Is there any way you could maybe set us up to better handle this, and perhaps even take the strain off of yourselves?   I know it would probably take a lot of time and work, and maybe even money (?), but in the long run perhaps it would be worth it.  After the kinks get smoothed out, it might just mean less work for you, but better results for those of us who are still here ever day, or close enough to it.  It would pay off in the future.   I've got some ideas, and I know some of my fellow bloggers have GOT to have a few to throw in, or even improvements on mine!

  1. A sort of 'vote' system for users.  If there is an offensive blogger who is going above and beyond the call of shittyness, let us all click a button where clicks will add up over time.  Maybe once it's reached so many clicks, that person's account automatically becomes suspended.  If it happens a second time, they get a longer suspension.  If it happens a third time, well, three strikes, you're out, and their account gets automatically deleted.
    • I get that there are loopholes with this.  The person with the suspended account could easily create another one.  Either that next one will get voted into suspension also and so on if they keep doing it, and if they have a life, then eventually they'll give up or they don't have a life and well, that's just sad for them anyway.  Still brainstorming.
    • Also, I am aware that it might be a good idea to limit how many clicks each user can do each day, or week.  With that, I also understand that this can be abused via creating another account.  Maybe we just need to make some more secure accounts so that becomes obsolete.
  2. A report system for inexcusable offenses, such as plagiarism.  Perhaps a link to click that allows a brief message sent to an administrator, who then removes that person.
    • I know, you'd have to find administrators.  Maybe there would be a few voluntary souls, and then you wouldn't have to worry about paying for them.  I know there are a number of trustworthy people here who could do it, but I don't know how things are run currently, so ....
  3. Extending this, perhaps we could even get a 'spam' button for blogs.  This might require a similar system to the above mentioned about plagiarism, purely because somebody could easily just not like another blogger and decide to call their posts spam.
    • Perhaps instead of that sort of a system, maybe work with the tagging system so that any 'advertising' posts are and must be categorized as such (might require another sort of report/flagging system), and do not show up on the regular pages.  They'd have their own section maybe, so that regular readers don't have to be bothered with them, but if somebody does want to check them out, they still can.

Just a few ideas.  I know there are tons of thing I don't know about running a website, programming, etc., so I am not suggesting that you are doing poorly, but just that things could be running a little smoother and it would be nice if we could have some of the influence/lend a hand here since we use the site and are here more regularly.

I just hate to see other great bloggers feeling poorly about blogging here, or even thinking of leaving.  I also personally don't like feeling doubts in that maybe it's time to move on, or to find another place to let my thoughts out.  I'm interested in a little action about this, even to help if I can anywhere.

Anybody else have any ideas, thoughts, etc.?

Rain - It would be nice, maybe something could work out.

MMI - That's generally what I do too, 'My Conversations', then 'My Users', then the first page of the home page and on to my own blog.  I just know there are many users out there who explore differently, or more in depth, and it'd be nice if all of us could still feel free to roam as we please without feeling like the roaming was pointless.  Also, knowing that some people still do like to check out the ads and whatnot, that's why I thought of the idea to perhaps make a section for them, so they're still here, but just not intermingled with the other stuff.

i can see that you have put a lot of thought into this - I second your ideas - I know that there were rumours that this site was going tits up - but I dont think so though.I just think that due to changing times a lot of people have jumped on and a lot have jumped off - but the core members are all still here - just vewy vewy quiet of late - for their own reasons.
A suggestion would be to PM SC directly and ask the question - I did it once and got a quick and good response.

I wish they'd offer some possibility of our monetizing our efforts. Why not try to bring Adsense or some other vehicle back so we can at least lie to ourselves that this effort is worthwhile?

I enjoy talking to you guys, but how can I justify this when I have so much other crap to get done?

Sorry for being uninformed. I’ve been absent from SC for some time and only realized AdSense had been removed when you mentioned it. That makes SoulCast’s mission statement (“SoulCast is a free, online global community where you can get paid to blog without constraints in full anonymity”) untrue. Why hasn’t this been changed yet? I also see that their blog hasn’t been updated since February 15, 2009. Has the captains abandoned ship?

I think the energy spent on war could be spent on ourselves,

having the product of less battle and more progress.

Like you said, alot of lloopholes and

than they are going to rebel from feeling neglected

and you are going to see more ads, maybe making someone more annoyed or whatever adjective you want to use there

when all that energy can be used to make the good thangs better here.

I am guilty, for i have plagarized, but i never acted like it was my own, just copy and paste so i dont have to keep going to that part of a site.

I think it would be fair if sysadmin had a little icon next to their name, so you could electronically catch them in the hallways, but that's just my humble opinion.

I wish they'd work on the ads and affiliates programs to start making everybody money like they originally wanted to do. I'd be more than willing to assist...
  • Hegemone said on Oct 15, 2009....
CJ - Good idea.  Thank you, and yeah I have put a lot of thought into it.  As of late I just seem to hear more and more concerns echoed, and also more thoughts on others leaving the site, which while they're perfectly able to, it stinks that they should feel pushed to do it on something else or someone else's terms.

Curm - I agree too, I suppose it did give us some sort of excuse to be here.   But then, why isn't taking a little time for ourselves just for the simple fact of our own enjoyment/entertainment/self mental preservation important either?  Lol.

Mouse - You know, I hadn't even thought about the slogan being a lie now.  Huh, that's true.  As far as the captain jumping ship ... I think that's what we're all beginning to grow concerned about.

UF - Well I think a lot of energy could go to making the site better.  Copy pasting while at least mentioning that the info came from elsewhere, even elsewhere on SC or from wherever if you can't remember the EXACT source is better than what some are doing.  Some are copying WHOLE posts from other bloggers and presenting them as their own.

Java - That's a great idea for there to be a little icon next to the admins' names.  I think I'd be willing to assist too if it wasn't so wishy washy.  Either get the ads and affiliates program running full force and more smoothly, or do away with it and make a few other changes to supplement.  Not the in between thing.
  • javadewd said on Oct 16, 2009....
It wouldn't be difficult to launch an affiliates program without the use of Google. I did it for a while (started it for free, but like I've mentioned before, several co-bloggers have now wrote books) so I know it can be done... Now if the powers that be would ask!
  • Hegemone said on Oct 16, 2009....
Java - It does sound like a very easy and equitable idea, but yeah, just to get the ball rolling ...
  • javadewd said on Oct 16, 2009....
I don't believe any sysadmin in their right mind would give me any sort of "free reign" to their server, but if the ad/affiliate program could be accessed through a 3rd party server, that may be better. Once it has been deemed good and working [and profitable] they can always just get permission to take it over... Or not... Maybe I should just do it and sell my services to SC? Oh, if only I could master flat-space technology!!
  • Hegemone said on Oct 16, 2009....
Java - True enough, lol, hey if only it would work.  Ha, that might be interesting having you sort of running the place.
  • javadewd said on Oct 16, 2009....
I don't want to run the place. I simply want the place to run... Efficiently! I don't have aspirations of grandeur, but hell if I can make a buck at it... Oh who am I kidding... I picked up three websites in less than a week... I'm bogged down as it is... I'll just wait.
  • mousenphonic said on Oct 16, 2009....
java, you can run the place for all I care, I just want SC the way it used to be and better. We used to be one of BlogSpot's biggest competitions, wtf happened?
  • javadewd said on Oct 16, 2009....
Yeah, I got here on the tail end of that and I am sorely disappointed.
  • Hegemone said on Oct 16, 2009....
Java, Mouse - Huh, I had no idea that SC really was doing that well.  I either wasn't here yet or I wasn't aware enough to know it.  Huh, sounds like some real improvements could definitely be made.  I want to send a message to SoulCast themself, but at the same time, I don't know that any of my ideas are even realistic enough to bother them with it.
  • javadewd said on Oct 17, 2009....
Somebody should start a petition, invite others, and once there are like a ton of signees, then send it to SC. The petition would have to state the type of improvements that the users would like to see. To what end SC would recognize such a petition is yet to be explored, but it's worth a shot...
  • Hegemone said on Oct 17, 2009....
True, so it looks like we need to get sort of a running list of the changes we'd like to see, and then put them all together, and see if we all agree, and then put it into petition form.
  • javadewd said on Oct 17, 2009....
    - Ads/Affiliates Program (fixed)
    - Icons for system status (sysadmin, thread owner, etc) beside user names
    - Better searchability
    - The ability to customize our blog templates like the big boys do(?)

That's all I got right now...
  • Eilan said on Oct 17, 2009....
I mentioned this in an old blog entry of mine from a couple of years ago, but I'd like to see something like a bulletin-board Ignore function.

That way SC can continue to remain "uncensored" and I can choose whose blogs I see.
