  every time I read one of these stories where innocent harmless behavior is rewarded with heavy handed discipline I have to shake my head.  What is wrong with people?!!

  I think virtually every guy in elementary, mid-high, and high school had a pocket knife when I was going to school. How times change.

  Now when I was going to high school waaaaayyy back in the eighties, there were numerous toilet incidents.  Every once in  a while someone would get a swirly (basically they were ganged up on and held upside down with their head in the toilet and someone would flush) or someone would stick a firecracker in the toilet.
  Gee, not once did the principal ever think of removing all of the toilets.
   
  I imaging there are plenty of ways to kill or maim other students with already available school equipment.  I'm willing to bet you could do a lot of damage with a tuba or a trombone.  You could probably smash the windows and go after people with shards of glass.
   
  Until; they get at the cause of violence in schools instead of focusing on the tools, no one is going to get anywhere.
   
  Case in point; in my senior year of high school, one of the sophmores shot his mother and his little brother and came to school the next day, with his gun, which he proceeded to place in his locker.
   
  Everyone, and I mean everyone at the school knew there was something wrong with this kid.  The school begged his mother to get him help.  She didn't.
   
  People are reactive instead of proactive.  Too bad.

  what ever happened to adult judgment?....don't we have the ability to make decisions based on character and history......judges do it all the time for criminals....sometimes they even throw cases out of court.....why can't our school administrators make the same kinds of judgments?

  Yup, you gotta watch out for them boy scouts ... never know what they're gonna do!  Geez, you know, why don't they just get it over with and hold school in a padded rubber room with only pictures to learn from ... no individual books ... and the pictures have to be printed on rounded foam paper.

  This school seems to be x-tra zero tolerant in these matters. I heard a girl was expelled for bringing an exacto knife to art class to cut shapes out of paper and another kid was expelled for bringing a cake to class to celebrate her birthday and bringing a knife to cut slices for her classmates.

  I feel badly for this little guy. He's an innocent, but having been a teacher for over 25 years I can tell you it's a fine line on how to handle things. The rules are made and sent home in a handbook for the parents to read and inforce ao my first question is why would the parents allow their 6 year old to bring something to school that is not allowed. It sounds so innocent, a little boyscout tool, but if an older or disturbed child had gotten ahold of it, someone could have been hurt. My own daughter, when she was 8, was threatened by a 9 year old carrying a knife at a bus stop (on school property). The girl was a very angry and disturbed young lady and of course was not allowed back in school for several days and sent to a guidance counselor. I have seen young children threaten others with many objects less dangerous than this could have been. I've seen them do the same to teachers. I, myself, was attacked by an 8 year old. Thank God, he had no weapon or I would have been seriously hurt. We like to think back about the times when little boys carried pen knives and used them for useful little boy activities, but times have changed. Violence is everywhere and the children are exposed to it hours a day watching TV. Drug craziness wasn't happening when in the innocent days of pocket knives. It was simply a different era. Do I think the little boy should be expelled? No. But a suspension, probably. If rules are not followed, someone will be hurt. And all of us want school to be a safe place. Not an easy job, folks. I know I'm going against all of you lovely people but I want ALL children to be safe and it takes cooperation and following the rules that are made to make it possible.

  I will say this, an age appropriate eating utensil in the hands of a young child who understand and knows what it is for is safer in my books than an enraged, disturbed child with a nice sharp pen, pencil or compass point in hand.  Somebody said it, it's a fine line.  So in order to be completely safe I think you'd better pull all the sharp objects out of your classroom and equip all the students with tiny bits of chalk and let them write on the walls or floor instead of in books (because a paper cut is a nasty thing to get). 
  
  Suspension for an innocent mistake?  Bullshit.  Did YOU have your driver's license pulled the first time you exceeded the speed limit because do keep in mind, a two  ton car traveling above the speed limit can do a HELL of a lot of damage when that same innocent child chases a ball onto the road because he missed the course on road safety because he had to sit his ass at home for 45 days. 
  
  Let's employ some common sense here folks.  Not choose to hide behind a directive when we don't want to make a decision because dammit ... it's too close to 5:00pm and we want to get home to watch TV.

  I see what you're saying, Woman, of course there has to be rules, but Zachery's mom said he put it in his backpack without her knowledge.
  I almost lost an eye when I was 14 from a rubber band shot at someone else in study hall. Good thing I had my eyes closed. The poor kid who shot it was scared to death he'd get in trouble...I was just mad because he woke me up.

  Twyla, If the little guy put it in his backpack without his parent's knowledge it would appear he knew better. Yes. 6 years old do have some sense of what is right and wrong. So, I still say he should have been suspended for a couple of days.

   I'm awfully glad that you had your eyes closed but what were you doing sleeping in school you bad girl?

  I had mono but didn't know it. I fell asleep in English and the teacher threw a blackboard eraser at me and hit me in the head to wake me up.  Those were very different days...lol.
