We all know that SoulCasters are aspiring writers, and some even are professional writers as with the case of most bloggers. The genres are widely varied too, from erotica (Silverwhisper, secretlife, creativewoman, and many others), fiction (can't really remember the names), poetry (many others), to screenwriting.

The other professions I have encountered here on SoulCast are dancers like MikoFabulous, strippers like Rarity, film makers like Indiefilm, and even porn stars like RealMenLuvPorn (or so he claims). These are either professions or passions. Some people are lucky enough to combine the two, but unfortunately most aren't.

Writing has been one of my major passions. But the truth is, it's second-best for me. I've always had an eye for acting ever since I was young. Well, like I said, I was young. I didn't do anything about it, nor my parents. I never even told anyone for fear of being labeled as a weirdo. Well that, and the fact that artistic professions were never exactly in the dictionary of a chinese family. So I guess my parents just thought of it as a passing hobby of a child.

My first opportunity of actually going deeper than just fantasizing about acting came in Taipei. I enrolled in a theater group ran by an Icelandic director. It was an eye opener and an enlightening experience. That was the defining moment when I could say, "Hah! I knew it!".

Anyway, so far I haven't encountered any aspiring actors on SoulCast. I'd love to meet other Soulcasters who has the same interest. If there's any, care to share your experience with me? Films, theaters, musical actors are all welcome. Professionals, amateurs, and wannabes please join :)

miss b: the lack of support from your family is regrettable, esp given the influence that chinese opera has had on some influential filmmakers.

SW: not to mention the huge influence Hong Kong has had on the film industry. Movies like the Matrix, Kill Bill, and many others were either influenced or worked on directly by people from the Hong Kong scene.

A huge amount of filming influence has come from that direction.

I don't think I would make a good actor. I plan to do some bit roles here and there in my filming, but mostly I plan to be behind the camera and behind the scenes making it happen.

Though it is a goal of mine to kill myself off in a movie. - kind of morbid I know, but hey, I think it would be fun. ;)
  • missb said on Sep 26, 2006....
Silverwhisper, it is indeed regrettable. It's not that they didn't allow it. They just didn't think.

And chinese opera isn't exactly big in Indonesia. Hell, they even used to ban the lion dance :)

But anyway, I'm not giving up just yet. I know I'm a bit late on the age thing, but who cares. Life is once. Live fully :D

    Cheers!

    Missb,

It's never too late. Do you think all those actors playing adults started acting as kids? Not at all, not at all. It's never too late to get into something like that. It's not always easy, but if your passionate about it, it's a lot of fun.

    good luck!

    Indiefilm,

I agree. Chinese/Hongkong movies have influenced Hollywood in the past years. That's a good thing, atleast for me :)

So, how's that movie project of yours going on? Hope it's great :) Keep us posted...

    Cheers!
  • missb said on Sep 26, 2006....
    Indiefilm,

Yeah, I sure do hope that it's not too late :) But I dunno. It seems that those actors have started long ago. Not necessarily since they're kids but aleast 5 to 10 years. Sounds kinda scary. But you're right. If I'm passionate bout it, it's a lot of fun ;)

    Cheers!

    Missb:

It's moving, I just shot the first official roll for the film.

We are about 8-10 months out from shooting the main portions of the movie. which sounds like a lot of time, but when you've got some 200+ extra's to coordinate schedules with, locations to find, permits, set designs to make and build, etc, etc... We ended up hiring another producer to help get everything set up and ready to roll for next summer.
  • Indiefilm said on Sep 26, 2006....
    Missb,

I'm not sure where your located, but look into the independant filming community in your area (if one exists). It tends to be a good place to start, you might not make money working micro-indie films, but you get time in front of a camera. That never hurts, and gives you something for your resume.

Check Craigs list if you have it in your area... we use it almost exclusively for open casting calls, you might be suprised by what you find in your local area, I was.
  • missb said on Sep 26, 2006....
Indie, that's great. Sounds exciting as well.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into it.

Although I actually prefer to start off in small theaters. I'm kinda nervous with camera :/ Hehh...I know, it's not gonna help my acting career :) Duh.

Oh, and good luck with the movie!

    Cheers :)

I was part of a pilot for a local production company....the show was to be called Get Real TV, a comedy skit show in the spirit of SNL and In Living Color. The show fizzled though when the Ex. Producer absconded to Cali to chase down his baby and his baby's momma. Not kidding, I couldn't make this up.

Previously I have been in several stage productions, and am currently playing with the idea of going to some of the local casting calls again, although I must admit the drama from Get Real put a bad taste in my mouth for indy projects, no offense intended to indiefilm. I've been compared to Matt Damon, that's good I guess. I'd love to be part of a feature length project or another pilot....I think film is where my passion lies rather than stage. I can also sing fairly well....I guess I've always been an entertainer at heart missb, just like you. Do whatever you can to make it a reality.
  • Indiefilm said on Sep 26, 2006....
missb... wow... I honestly can't tell you. We are making a war movie right now, so the demographic of who we are going to attract for the project is a bit different than a drama or a romantic comedy. We do have a woman who is likely to be working one of the camera's, she's done some of her own production work, and made a documentary or two.

I know that there are female producers, I honestly can't tell you if it's harder for them than it is for guys. I don't think that it is, but I'm not in Hollywood. I'm in a fairly foward thinking area where the idea of a woman being a less capable leader is insulting to most poeple. I'm also not subject to any gender bias on that front.

It's not really an easy job to begin with, however. It takes a very organized people person to pull it off, and you have to be able to deal with a lot of people and stressed out situations. It's not all doom and gloom, it can be a lot of fun too.
  • missb said on Sep 26, 2006....
    Tiki,

Lol... that ex. producer story cracks me up :D

Being compared to Matt Damon is definitely a good thing. He's a great actor.

I'd love to get into film as well. But I gotta take care of my camera shyness first ;)

Well, I'm glad that you're living your passion, making it a reality. Not many can do that. I'm still summoning my courage to do that :)

    Good luck!
  • Indiefilm said on Sep 26, 2006....
Tiki; no offense taken, a lot of indy stuff is thrown together by people who have no clue what the hell they are doing. Most of them don't realize that 75-80% of the work in making a movie happens prior to filming the movie, or at least they don't know that before their first or second movie.

If they survive that, sometimes they learn, other times they shoot one movie (or try to) and give up after they realize just how much of themselves they have to put into each and every minute of film.

If who you were working with didn't have their shit together before picking up the camera, then it wouldn't supprise me at all that you have a bad taste in your mouth.
  • missb said on Sep 26, 2006....
Oh Indie, you actually got my question :)

Ah well, yeah, that's what I heard. Just thought I'd ask you :)

I was just curious and was kinda thinking about taking one year producing course in NYFA. But the truth is, I was just running away from what I really wanna do which is acting.

I was thinking of taking something that is more practical but still in the same kind of industry.

Anyway, thanks for the help ;)

    Cheers!

I acted a bit in college....but then all preachers are actors in a sense.
  • dailyachesandpains said on Sep 26, 2006....
    Hey Missb,
I actually grew up KNOWING I was going to be an actress. For as long as I can remember, I was being told 'oh you're so dramatic'. Well, I took that and ran with it, although not far, but enough to do what I wanted to do at least once.

I was fortunate enough to have supportive parent's. I thought I would feel a little weird behind a camera acting, so they sent me to modeling school in the big city. There, I was able to get used to facial expressions, and looking at the camera and they even gave us scripts to practice and filmed them where we could see ourselves on the monitor. I will never forget one girl who cried non stop over seeing herself on film, she thought her cheeks were 'too puffy'. Afterall, she signed up to model ;-) not act. I didn't care either way, I was there to learn and take in what anyone would teach me.

So, time went on and I was getting modeling jobs...I was not happy (teen at the time). All I wanted to do was ACT, not POSE like a dummy. I took more classes, even went out west. When I came back, I got a call for a commercial, and finally not a print commercial. I was chosen! However, I wanted a movie, but this was a step in the right direction so I went with it. Beggers can't be choosers in this industry!

I got all new head shots after the commercial because I now had a resume that had the proof that I was on film! Now I was moving out West, to live. I did a million extra jobs, and some extra's were actually casted in a few cases. I have to admit, I was never one of them. I was facinated when I was in a scene with famous actors, I didn't care if I had to walk by them or just stand there. It was all a thrill for me.

Unfortunately, I had to move back East and the call for work in film isn't as abundant as it is out west. I didn't want to model, so I didn't. I continued to take classes and did 2 more commercials and got a part in a PBS 'short' before I was 23 (started this when I was 17). Then, I don't know why but I started to suffer from MAJOR panic attacks which was what killed my acting career and dreams.

I would really encourage you, and anyone else, to take the dive into acting if they have the 'bug' to do it. If I could start all over again, I would and would not hesitate, but I'm not in a position where I can right now. I think Indie may agree with me here, you can look into film schools that have students looking for actors for their projects. It won't pay, that's almost a given, but it's a start. They'll usually give you a copy and you can start building a resume!

I wish you the best of luck! I really can't wait to hear that you did it!

    HBC,

Wow, your first comment on my post :) Thanks...

    Dailyachesandpains,

I'm so happy to know that you had the chance of living your dreams. A lot of actors actually started off as a model. It's really a good stepping stone.

Thanks for the encouragement. I really appreciate it. It makes me wanna do it even more :) And looking into film schools is a great idea. It's a good start.

Well, I really do hope I can tell you when I finally did it. I really do :) Thanks a lot.

    Cheers!

I don't have the acting bug, I just like to read about what 'bugs' other people here have. I'm just being nosy.

Tiki here I'm reading you for the past few days and there's not a peep about this Matt Damon thing...not acting stuff....sheesh!

And Indie I already knew about. I fully plan to tell everyone "I knew him when" as soon as his film is out.

I've been in a few 'home movies', but then that's a different topic.
  • dailyachesandpains said on Sep 26, 2006....
What is this Matt Damon thing about? I have yet to get an entire post on what's going on with him. Someone tell me! He's a nice guy, too bad his other nice guy buddy Ben has been doing some crappy movies. Ben's producing his latest and NOT starring in it...hummmm....
  • missb said on Sep 27, 2006....
    Daily,
I will do :) Thanks for the support...If you read Tikiwop9's comment, you'll read that he said he's been compared to Matt Damon. So that's what Secretlife was referring to ;)

    TNP,
Wow... I've seen them all. And I didn't go to the bathroom. Care to tell me which one you were? :D

    SL,
Lol....we're all nosy ;) And 'home movies' are good....hehehe...

I have been in a semi-professional theater company for 4 years.
We partecipated once to the Theater Festival in Roma, Italy along with other 32 companies.
We didn't win but we got a lot of positive reviews. We were specialized in plays from the greatest Italian playwriter of '900, Luigi Pirandello and Achille Campanile.
Plus, we had a repertoire of plays from the Russian writer, Checov, and some French beuadeville pieces for fun purpose.

I have been in a musical too ispired by the Red Hood faiy tale: i was the singing and dancing gypsie that was warning that silly girl from the wolf.....we had so much fun!

My greatest memories of my youth.....we were a group of 30 young and old semiprofessional actors....
I had to give ad auditon to be admitted.
I was so happy when they told me i was in!
We went in tour too one year.
i still remember the smell of the heavy curtains of the theaters, the small and messy dressing rooms, the unvearable excitment before any big first night.
    I was pretty good.
Not shy at all and with a very good memory for all the lines.
i woud do it again in a blink of a ye...i pushing with my daughter to make her join the drama group at school...she is very interested ...must runs in the family LOL
Sorry your family is not that supportive.....

I love movies more than theater now....
But i am open to talk about it anytime.....:-)
  • missb said on Sep 27, 2006....
    Ginger, I envy you..... :)

I never had any 'real' stage performance with curtains and all :/

*sigh* I miss acting so much...

    Thanks for sharing ;)

Missb....it would be so late for you?

Couldn't you find something to finally taste some of that cake you are craving so much?

    Look around...
Indie gave you great suggestions....on my newspaper i see often requests for extras...just try..go and see..somebody might know somedody else who might lead you to something...who knows...

    Its never too late....

INDIE.....: i am online news reporter......do you have any scoop for me about your movie?
Hey, do you need a press agent, maybe? i am open to anything...
    Btw, i envy your job....
  • missb said on Sep 27, 2006....
    Ginger,

No... I'm hoping it's not too late for me :) Hell, I'm still gonna try, so that says it all.

Yes, I'm still looking for that piece of the cake. Don't really know how yet, cuz theater business in Indonesia isn't really like in the states. My plan is to try and get into some acting/theater school first. Then I'll take it from there. I'm just hoping it would be soon ;)

    Cheers!
  • Indiefilm said on Sep 27, 2006....
    Ginger: No comment.

Sorry I've just always wanted to say that!

We aren't currently giving out 'the scoop' on this project. Given how far out the shooting date is, alot of things are subject to change as the project develops. Whats more, we aren't interested in risking someone else grabbing the story and trying to run with it before we get a chance to shoot it.

It's the type of story that people want to be involved in and every single person we've told has wanted to sign on to do the project.

Which makes us a bit leary about giving away too much just yet, because we know what we have is hot...

And it's not so much my 'job' as a 'life consuming hobby'. It's not paying the bills (yet), but there are other projects in the works after this one... I may even get paid for some of them. LOL!
  • gingersoul said on Sep 27, 2006....
    LOL about the no comment....

Ok, i completely understand.....keep me in mind if you need a incy bincy of publicity....

    Good luck!!!!
