A cross to remember the dead.  My religious beliefs are fairly well known to Soul Casters.  If you're a newb I'm an atheist and I think all you people who believe a space ghost created us and handed down morality from his cloud city are kinda stupid.  I'm a strong believer that Church and State MUST both remain separated and be separated in places where it has been allowed to grow together.  Such as with marriage.  A marriage is a legal partnership contract dealing with how property is used and split in case of a split, it allows for medical decisions blah blah blah.  You should be able to be partners with men, women, or twelve of each.  The problem here is we have allowed Religion to creep in and it must be driven out.  I'd personally take "under God" from the pledge.  It was added fifty years ago to make us better than the Russians.  We were scared, it happens.

There are lines that aren't supposed to be crossed though.  One of them is that we as a primarily Christian Nation put crosses up to comemorate our dead.  Sorry about being a Jew or a Muslim or an American Indian or any other religion that may have given your life in a particular conflict.  You need to increase your numbers so you get a bigger vote next time we have a World War.  The fact is that the Cross isn't about diminishing what you and your familes contributed to the war.  The people who put up the Cross weren't even thinking about what religion the fallen were.  They were remembering that great men gave their lives so that others could live in freedom.  It cheapens what these men did for you to bicker about it.

I'm an atheist, too, but I say "AMEN" to that.
Leave the cross alone, for crying out loud.  Just don't friggin' look at it if it offends you.

Holy Shit! Twelve of each? Do you have a board of directors and what happens when the dozen women decide vote your happy ass off the island, Fabio?

I do agree that these road-side crosses can be road hazards, though. I think they cause more accidents than the commemorate sometimes.

As far as crosses in national cemeteries, I'm sure that if the family of the fallen were known to be a strong non-Christian family that they would put something different... Wouldn't they? I mean like a Star of David for a Jewish soldier or something. Don't they do that?
  • SeanRenaud said on Oct 11, 2009....
These aren't for individual soldiers.  They are mass memorials for all of the fallen in a battle or a campaign or something of the like.
  • javadewd said on Oct 11, 2009....
According to what I'm reading about Artlington National Cemetary, they will issue a religious marker (Star of David, etc) instead of a cross on the government-issued headstone... Are you sure you're not talking about something more specific?
  • Twylarants said on Oct 11, 2009....
J'Dewd ~ The cross is in the Mojave National Preserve.  Here's a link.

Sigh. Again, take a look at French military cemeteries. They are nothing but crosses. I think the Anti-Christan Lawyers Union needs to go hump a different leg on this one...

A cross represents in basic non religious terms death.  For crying out loud, road side crosses as a reminder to all those who have perished on our roads be they any religion.

Man people are offended esily - leave the damn thing alone and start remembering what the hell it's for.  I agree Sean, its cheapening the very fact that men died saving the lives and livlihoods of thsoe bickering about it.

Out here in the fly-over states they actually have solar-powered lighting on their roadside crosses now... At some point it simply becomes too gaudy and needs to be laid to rest.
  • SeanRenaud said on Oct 12, 2009....
If the problem is that it's gaudy by all means get rid of them.  But that isn't the argument that is being presented here.
  • javadewd said on Oct 12, 2009....
Oh, oops. Sorry, I guess I missed the point. Can you clarify?
  • SeanRenaud said on Oct 12, 2009....
The point of the article is that having the cross up at memorials is insulting to people of other religions.  Jews and Muslims specifically but I assume it must extend to all who aren't belivers in the Cross.
  • Twylarants said on Oct 13, 2009....
J'Dewd ~ the cross Sean is talking about was erected in the '30s by WW1 soldiers to memorialize fallen comrades.  It's 5 or 8 ft tall, depending on which news article you read.
A park ranger was offended by it so the ACLU took it to court.
That's why I said if you don't like it, don't look at it.
  • javadewd said on Oct 13, 2009....
I agree. A squirrel sheriff of all people is offended by a cross... Not a dog catcher, mayor or governor? Besides, I don't hear any of the dead complaining... If this guy wasn't born when it was erected, then I guess he has his right to complain, but I have the right to laugh at his over-sensitive lactating bitch ass, too. He truly needs to be dressed in a diaper and fed breast milk, because the poor son of a bitch wants his mama. Geezus what a cry-baby!

Exactly my point.  You know Java you shouldn't try so hard to disagree with me.  :-P

Sorry, I thought you were talking about something else... Ooops. My bad... I'm still in shell-shock that bloc "unblocked" me recently.

    Deep breaths, Dewd...deep breaths.

    No doubt...
  • SeanRenaud said on Oct 14, 2009....
I mean don't get me wrong.  I still think you're a liar, like for instance there hasn't been a Pro-Life march at my office yet and since I work like half a block from two Catholic Churches and three blocks from a Catholic School they wouldn't have had to go out of their way on their normal marches to harass me but for the most part we're cool.  Sides with Andycox and Sheltercrow back I've only got a limited amount of hatred and you're kinda not ranking.  Consider yourself Italy in WW2, you were with the bad guys but nobody remembers or even cares.  You're cool now and give us shiny cars.  It's those damn Germans and Japs that must never forget.
  • javadewd said on Oct 14, 2009....
Well, first off, the org I deal with isn't Catholic, but thanks for playing. Also, Catholics probably wouldn't march on you, they'd have a vigil, late at night, and have it televised for the sake of your public embarrassment. I'm not that cruel. I'm not Catholic. Also, these guys do their research -- like Acorn, but the intentions and motivations are different -- and would probably orchestrate something more subtle behind the scenes than a direct protest. Like I mentioned, if some of your vendors' wives are pro-life, then they would go there. Heck, they might of found out that a majority of your staff are already pro-life and figured once you made your stance known, they'd eat you for breakfast anyway.

But being called Italy isn't so bad I guess... It beats being called a racist or an indecent person like some around here... Also didn't you label me a liar before all that?
  • SeanRenaud said on Oct 14, 2009....
Yeah I did.  I forget what it was exactly.  But hey, we're cool at the moment and that's all that really matters.
  • javadewd said on Oct 14, 2009....
I'll take it. Have a beer on me!

Simply, the answer is NO! It doesn't jibe with the rudimentary doctrines of Jesus or even our own sense of morality. Who can condemn a newborn baby for sin? Who can say Adam condemned us all by sinning? It's a crazy concept!...
