You have seen examples of this before.

But it's something we need to keep in perspective, and in mind.

It seems congress only talks in trillions now.

Mathematician John A. Paulos gave these insights to what a trillion means :

One million seconds - 11 and 1/2 days
One billion seconds - 32 years
One trillion seconds - 32,000 years

A stack of one thousand dollar bills

One million dollars - 4.3 inches
One billion dollars - 358 feet
One trillion dollars - 67.9 miles

Our national deficit for 2009 - 1.4 trillion

Our national deficit total - Over 11.9 trillion and counting.

After congress has borrowed all it can from countries who don't want to lend anymore, after they have completely stolen the Social Security Fund (which is about now), after the printing presses won't run any faster 24 hours a day, what will they do then?

They can't tax us enough to keep up with their spending, especially with a 17-20% unemployment rate counting the ones who have quit looking for jobs....and climbing....

I'm beginning to wonder.....

That's higher than I can count on my fingers and toes so I don't understand. ;)

frags- My spending is closer to fingers and toes too. That's why this amazes me so much. It's more like numbers for inter galactic space travel.

808.01 miles sounds like a death march for our economy...how sad. Lets hope and pray for a firm path financially by our current and future administrations to defuse this ticking time bomb.

I know you guys don't care for Glenn Beck, but please watch this.

myst- I have lost hope for a firm path. Have they ever acted except in time of a catastrophe - maybe?

pickers- I've seen those 50 and 100 trillion numbers before and they are really fairy tales because real wealth doesn't even exist in this country anymore. Our dollar will collapse long before, since it is presently only worth the confidence people have in it. In other words it is backed by a psychological thought.

Neither party will work to turn things around even your republicans. Glenn Beck has said as much. The bush era has proven the reps are just as likely to spend as the dems. Giant tax cuts with spending does more harm than raising taxes and spending. We need to just start all over and we will someday, it's the conditions we start over in I'm worried about.

Money is based on the price of rocks, oil etc...right?  (Dinosaur burps)

I am scared to say that, but am I right?

A tripple trillion means nothing to me.  It's just a long ruler made of sand.

Reading it right out like this ... well ... sorry, no time to finish my thought ... I've gotta run ... gotta go find the perfect rock to hide under once the shit finishes hitting the fan.

wombat- Money is supposed to be backed by gold or silver. The money we have now is called 'fiat' money because it is backed by nothing but the paper it's printed on. The change in your purse is worthless, it hasn't had silver in it since 1964. Every economy in history that has gone to fiat currency has collapsed. No one knows if there is a single ounce of gold in Fort Knox, they refuse to say,  and the govt doesn't own one ounce of silver.

    My Republicans?
    I am no Republican!
    Nor am I a democrat! :)
I'm about as Independent as you can get.

I'm with Bill O'Reilly on this.  He once said something like, "Republicans want to give all of my money to big business and the Democrats  want to give it to the Unions and social programs.  I don't want to give it to either."

If you have control of your own charitable contributions, you can make sure it goes to the right place, it's used effectively, and it isn't wasted.

I like the idea of small communities and helping your neighbors, and stuff like that.
Just recently, we donated to a worthy cause.  Our friends couldn't afford to send their son on a 4 day school trip.  We stepped in, no strings attached, no paper work, no government or school intervention at all.
That's the way the world should work.

pickers-  Oops, sorry, I thought you were. I imagine the way I've been writing lately, people think I'm a liberal democrat, but I'm not.

I definitely want health care for everyone no matter how that is labeled.
