After six months of the chicken follies, we FINALLY have two eggs.
We haven't eaten them yet. But they are in the fridge for all to admire.

I have to say, that chickens aren't all that much work.   I clean their coop once a week.  They have a large feeder and water thingy that I fill every day.  I give them all of our bread and vegetable scraps.  Except for the onions.  They aren't really crazy about onion scraps.........can't really blame them for that.
They are extremely spoiled with oats and corn meal...........and all of the grass and bugs and worms they can eat.

We kept them in a pen for a while, until they learned to fly.  Now, when they're out and about, I find them on the porch, in the garage, and sometimes up in the trees.  I guess you could say they free range.  Good thing we have a lot of tree cover, because I worry about the hawks.

We've added two light brown leghorns to the flock.  They don't like me much yet, but at least they're not hysterical when I open the coop now.  It was a rough transition for them, Sonja and Lady.  We saw them at the county fair and Mr. P decided we needed a few more chickens.  So for fifteen dollars, a great conversation with their owners (who have every kind of chicken you can imagine running around their yard), and a trip to a remote location a few miles away, we'll have about 36 eggs a week.

I'm not sure how we'll manage to eat 36 eggs a week...............good thing everyone we know has been asking for fresh eggs.  They'll just have to wait a little longer though.

Every morning I check for eggs and cheer them on, "Alright, whoever laid the egg is a really clever girl!  Now let's get laying everyone!  See?  Look how pretty the egg is!  Come on, you can do it girls!"

I get back to you in a few days and let you know if it works!

Oh, and if anyone has any chicken question, I am available for a Q and A.
I now consider myself a chicken expert.

Ha, that's so cool.  I bet fresh eggs would be fantastic.  It's something I'd like to try to do some day, but that's not for a long long time.  Yay for the eggs and kudos for your expertise.  I'll keep you in mind if I get to wondering about anything chicken.  :-)

Hi Lu.  Yeah, I worry about snakes too, although we don't have them like you have them!  Our coop is enclosed in hardware cloth, so I doubt anything could get in.
I've heard they get 5 dollars a dozen for farm fresh eggs!

Heg, the difference between fresh eggs and store bought is like Guiness and Miller Lite!  You could probably find them at a local farmers market!

Below, you'd need a rooster to have baby chickens.  The rooster needs to fertilize the egg in order for it to grow into a baby chick.  We only have hens, so no baby chicks.  Sorry to disappoint you.

Sounds like fun! My man asked me about chickens and I gave him a big hell no! The reason being we live in the suburbs with neighbors all around, we have a cat and more than 2 dogs you wanna add chickens??? He's a little nuts. Fresh eggs do sound good however. If I had a lot of space I might consider it. Good luck let us know how the coaxing goes!

Believe it or not, we have four dogs and three cats, but we live in farm country.
You know almost everyone used to keep a few chickens around until it went out of style and people started to consider it too hickish?
I found that out while I was researching.
