After six months of the chicken follies, we FINALLY have two eggs.
We haven't eaten them yet. But they are in the fridge for all to admire.
I have to say, that chickens aren't all that much work. I clean their coop once a week. They have a large feeder and water thingy that I fill every day. I give them all of our bread and vegetable scraps. Except for the onions. They aren't really crazy about onion scraps.........can't really blame them for that.
They are extremely spoiled with oats and corn meal...........and all of the grass and bugs and worms they can eat.
We kept them in a pen for a while, until they learned to fly. Now, when they're out and about, I find them on the porch, in the garage, and sometimes up in the trees. I guess you could say they free range. Good thing we have a lot of tree cover, because I worry about the hawks.
We've added two light brown leghorns to the flock. They don't like me much yet, but at least they're not hysterical when I open the coop now. It was a rough transition for them, Sonja and Lady. We saw them at the county fair and Mr. P decided we needed a few more chickens. So for fifteen dollars, a great conversation with their owners (who have every kind of chicken you can imagine running around their yard), and a trip to a remote location a few miles away, we'll have about 36 eggs a week.
I'm not sure how we'll manage to eat 36 eggs a week...............good thing everyone we know has been asking for fresh eggs. They'll just have to wait a little longer though.
Every morning I check for eggs and cheer them on, "Alright, whoever laid the egg is a really clever girl! Now let's get laying everyone! See? Look how pretty the egg is! Come on, you can do it girls!"
I get back to you in a few days and let you know if it works!
Oh, and if anyone has any chicken question, I am available for a Q and A.
I now consider myself a chicken expert.
