Was checking back on my converstions and remembered this email I got from a friend.  Thought I'd post this because it threw me for a small loop:

This should boggle your mind .
HOW BIG IS WALMART?

1.  Americans spend $36,000,000 at Wal-Mart every hour of every day.
2.  This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!
3.  Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St.Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.
4.  Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.
5.  Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer. And most can't speak English
6.  Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the World.
7.  Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger & Safeway combined, and keep in mind they did this in only 15 years.
8.  During this same period, 31 Supermarket chains sought bankruptcy (including Winn-Dixie).
9.  Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.
10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years ago..
11 This year 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur at a Wal-Mart store.
(Earth's population is approximately 6.5 billion.)
12. 90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart
Let Wal-Mart bail out Wall Street.  Better yet . . . let them run the damn Government

I worked at Wal-Mart for awhile.  Loved the morning cheers we had to do from time to time....

Check out #11!

I guess they have a reason to cheer!

Wow.  While I can't deny their success, nor the fact that I have heard that they do donate to charity and support many good causes, I still can't get warm feelings about the place.  My experience in working there wasn't so hot.  Loved my co-workers, those that were on the same level as me (or maybe a rung up), but not so much with any of the rest of it.  That's not saying all Walmarts are that way though.  But hey, maybe Wall Street and/or the government could learn a thing or two from them .... imagine if they had greeters like Walmart does ... boy that could be fun.  Can't say I liked the cheer ... doing it every morning for 4 months straight sort of, well, burned me out.  I'll never do another squiggly as long as I live, lol.  The rest I could probably handle.

I have never liked walmart.....they force their way into communities....there was one that was just built in our city.......a majority of the residents didn't want it there....we already had one across town........fought it for about 5 years.....but of course walmart gets what walmart wants!

Defenetely, business, have them rights and them wrongs, but at the end the resoult is there, and theres a number, a big number who chouse them, i dont have eny walmart, where i live, so i dont know enything abaut walmart, but if the information is true, then i have to said, that not all the people, are able, to take all the adventage mony can give, as i think abaut, i think walmart did very well, the way of making a succefoul proyect, after 15 years, probably it needs to check, clousely, and not economist probably get the chance to do it.

What is sad for me, is that defenetely, is not a problem betwin poverty and richness, the problem is that not all the people is able, to put out all the advantage, mony can give.

Mony, sameone tall me is a tipe of energy,... we liked or not, maybe is a tipe of energy, the humans have the oportunity to manage, in a material way, so as we want,... usualy, another tipe of energy we just think abaut, but isent the posibility to have in our hands.

But also make me happy, just see that we always can have a chance to review, and change, isent easy, i know, but.. all the answear are there.

There are four Super Wal-Marts within 10 miles of my house.Their parking lots are always pretty full.  I dunno -- I do go there, but not for groceries.  It's just too damn big and it takes too long to find what I want.

    Hello Wombie!
I had no idea Walmart employed that many people.
Gee, I hope they don't go out of business.
Between them, GE, and GM they must employ a pretty substantial amount of the population.
It's funny, I enjoy the Target shopping experience more, and I'll go to K-mart also.
I refuse to let anyone monopolize my business!
Usually for holiday shopping, I like to go to all of those smaller specialty shops.
For clothing, it's usually LL Bean or Macy's.
    I won't buy meat at Walmart..........sorry, I'm rambling.
anyone want to meet me at the Big E?  I'll ramble some more for free.............

Did you read the story about the WALL-MART employee who was trampled to death by eager customers who were fighting to get a product that was on sale?

Sorry guys---been MIA.  No biggie.  Just not feeling well and sleeping alot.

Hegemone:  I just realized that I meant to be sarcastic about the "cheer" thing.  But it sounded like I liked it!  Not!  We didn't do it often where I worked, anyway.

D6fer:  I don't care for Wal-Mart, either--yet I am guilty of spending money there more than I would like to.  I hate that they greedily forced out so many smaller stores, make ka-gillions, and with such poor policies.  I worked there, and I mean worked hard!  But if I had been single, I couldn't have made it on my paycheck--and would have had no insurance, either.  Part of their strategy, I think, is to rebuild and move often.  I'm not sure why, but probably something to do with making even more money, no doubt!

bhalah:  I know!  I don't understand how they can be so unfair with their practices, yet a "few elite" profit from their wealth and growth.  They pretty much don't care how blatent it is!

MissMimi:  We buy groceries there sometimes--when we're too lazy to go elsewhere.  But you know what, if I could "blink" like Jeanie---I'd like to blink them all away and let the little businesses have a field day!

pickersplock:  I knew they were "a giant" but it's way scary just how much of one they are!  I like small shops, too.  There's nothing like a little musty store with Mom & Pop running it, but they are few and far between.

mixednuts:  I'm sure you can.  I complain, but it would have been nice to be well invested with them from years ago, huh?  I worked "part-time" and didn't have any stock, or much of any kind of benefits.  But, hey....I got to be off for Christmas day.....after working way overtime in six different departments the night before!

BELOW TOP SECRET:  Yes, I remember that well.  It's hard to understand, and it's scary, but I wasn't surprised.

Thanks all.  I am sorry I've been neglecting ya'!

I've owned stock in Wal-mart for years (through Ameritrade).  It hasn't done much, but it DOES pay a dividend.  I expect it to climb one day.  They're paying me to keep it until then.

Wal-Mart's no worse than any other minimum wage outfit like McDonalds.
Wal-Mart simply sells what everybody else sells at a lower price.  Mom and pop shops should focus on what wal-mart can't do.  Quality and art.

Unique things and high quality goods can't be done cost-effectively.  Not enough people will buy them to make mass production feasible.

dyingman:  I had no reason to "slam" Wal-Mart in this post (well, I did work there for a short time as a fill-in job, and made little money for hard work with no benefits) but I mostly wanted to just post the fun fact thing.

I am impressed with the idea of Mom and Pop shops premise of quality and art.  I'm a huge fan of the small shops that get sadly scooted out by big commerce.

Too bad it's so hard to survive the busy economic freeway of life, when the side roads can be so scenic.

I'd love to have a small shop all my own, by the way.  I know what you are saying.  Even if I had $20,000 to sink into a business, what would it be that would be able to stay afloat?
