CNN) -- Former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday that racial politics played a role in South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst during President Obama's speech to Congress last week and in some of the opposition the president has faced since taking office.

"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he's African-American," Carter told NBC News. "I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that shares the South's attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African-Americans."

"That racism inclination still exists, and I think it's bubbled up to the surface because of belief among many white people -- not just in the South but around the country -- that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply," Carter said.

Carter made similar remarks at an event at his presidential center in Atlanta, Georgia, The Associated Press reported Tuesday, pointing to some protesters who have compared Obama to a Nazi. "Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national program on health care," the former president said at the Carter Center, according to AP. "It's deeper than that." He grouped Wilson's shout of "You lie!" during Obama's speech in that category, according to AP. "I think it's based on racism. There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president," he said."The president is not only the head of government, he is the head of state. And no matter who he is or how much we disagree with his policies, the president should be treated with respect."

so now we have redefined racism to mean if a person speaks their opinion and it differs from the political party in power's opinion that is racism?

how many people called Bush a liar and worse?  were they racists too?

Hold up Secret I didn't say it Carter said it, I posted it because it is news. But, we all know Carter is not completely wrong. Why is there so much opposition? You see, If we know or think that America does not have the knowledge to solve the problems, then we should be looking outside the box. I hear and read all these ideas that people have about healthcare, out of all the presidents before Obama, why have they not use those ideas to solve the healthcare issue. But we criticize Obama for not using those ideas and formulating new ideas..trying to put this thing to rest. Pointing to some protesters who have compared Obama to a Nazi. "Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national program on health care," the former president said at the Carter Center, according to AP. "It's deeper than that." And I agree.

Now...America has been dumb for decades, as I stated before. We have many people with a Ph.D. degree, many with a Masters degree, many with Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees; Doctors of Theology, Doctors of Law.The interesting thing about all of this, when we look at the problems of the society, we wonder, “Where is this knowledge?” Because knowledge is to give us the means by which we solve the problems of the society. Let me see if I can find some of these problems: Global warming, health care, the collapse of the economy. But look at all the people who have doctorate degrees in economics. If you are a doctor, you should be able to solve the problems.

ummmm, was it not nancy pelosi who likened the people protesting the health care plan  to nazi's?  doesn't she continue to do so?
    open your eyes.
most americans are not against health care reform.
they ARE against throwing out the old systmem altogether, which is not reform at all- but destruction and rebuildining.

reform would be to look at those things that don't work and make changes.
it would be allowing consumers to buy insurance across state lines, it would be automating to lower costs, it would be looking at what doesn't work and why and trying to fix.  it would NOT be another government takeover with billions and billions more debt dollars in an already troubled economy.  think outside the box?  you might find you have no box at all if you don't open your eyes and see what's right in front of them.

I don't know about all that,  I'm not all that politcally sound, trying to get a feel of it, you know, I just know what I'm looking at. Nancy could be wrong as well. I don't care about democrates or republicans. We want what is best( you and I). I heard the man say he was not throwing out the old system but, for lack of better words, upgrading it so everyone could have healthcare. My thing is this, why is healthcare so hard to reform? You may say it isn't, But why hasn't America after all these years solved this issue. How did our former presidents handle this?
