I was worried that the expenses row would come to nothing. That the public will rightly criticise MPs spending, but the argument would be forgotten about in a few months time.

But I was pleased to read that a new proposal has come forward to check what MPs are spending. The plan will look at corporate credit card spending and has been made by a London Assembly committee.

City Hall’s Business Management and Administration Committee (BMac) has hinted that a scheme of ‘random testing’ of the payments should be introduced.

If adopted, the new regime would see assembly members and staff personally check out individual credit card claims for themselves.

For example, if the card had been used for a holiday, the official's vacation companions might be telephoned in order to verify the claim.

I think this is a great idea, and comes at a time when the public really needs to know who we can trust. Especially as the Metropolitan police have just had to deal with another embarrassing blow of one officer giving himself a £12,000 unauthorised pay rise on his credit card thanks to the taxpayers.

What is even more shocking is that the police officer walked from court with a six month prison sentence, suspended for one year. The man claimed he didn’t realise he wasn’t allowed to use his cards for personal gain. OK, and I was born yesterday!

I know that there are genuine cases for expenses, but it does seem like an awful lot of people in the public eye are ‘stealing’ from the public, doesn’t it?
