"The thing is ..."
"The problem with that is ..."
"The point I'm trying to make is ..."
"The point I'm making is..."
"What I was saying was ..."
"The real issue is ..."
"Could you listen please..."
"Yes but ..."

These are phrases that someone near me uses in Every conversation, on Any topic, to Any person listening.
I find them to be rather confrontational and self absorbed (but then I can read the person's body language and facial expressions) especially as they come with a demanding tone.

They get used in ordinary conversations that get hijacked from a social trivia remark into a political, economic, environmental debate!

Question -
Am I the only one who gets annoyed by these?

I don't use it but I like: "The things is....".......;-p

I think its all depends by the tone of the voice and the body messages...

I hate when people say crap like that. It makes me feel that they just want to talk at me and not to me. I am pretty blunt when I talk to people I know and when one of them starts doing that I will point it out and ask them, "Is this just something you want to say with no feed back or uh.... are you wanting my opinion here? Cause if you want my opinion then you will have to shut up long enough to listen to it!"

momokandn - you're so direct! Wish I could be with this person. You're right - talks AT you not to or with you. gingersoul - the person who uses these expressions is one who insists on Standing when talking, who holds you in her eyes All The Time, You sometimes feel as if you're pinned to a specimen slide! Voice is full of "determination" (I'll hit the thesaurus to find simething more apt, sorry) to be the centre of your attention. unicorn form - selfish? O yes. If you can't hold eye contact with this person, you get a challenge "I'm talking. You should be listening to me please!" Nnggaarrgghh!!!! Thanks for popping in, people

Well........if those were the body signals.... i usually don't even interact with people like that..

I let them talk with my sweetest smile and then i simply ask:
"Haven't you finished yet? You are going to have an heart attack. Its my turn to talk or i have to come back tomorrow?"

People who are so aggressive get always utterly confused when people don't react the way they are expecting...

    Try ....it works anytime...;-)
