Does it bother you to read someone's blog or receive an email and it is all done in capital letter's?

I must admit that it does bother me a little but I usually ignore it and just wonder why do it. I notice someone will write the person and say, hey what is the problem? will you stop it with the caps, why are you so angry? this is the type that it really bothers.

A lady was fired for always sending letters to fellow employees done in caps. She was not pleased with the way that they were filling out certain forms and this was her way in getting her point across.

People complained about it and she was fired.

She sued the company and won, apparently you can't be fired for writing in all caps, no matter how annoying it is.

Using all caps is almost as annoying as not using any caps at all, like Silverwhisper and some others. Or not using any punctuation. It makes me think people are retarded and I stop paying any attention to what they are saying.

  • Scaramouche said on Sep 02, 2009....
Yeah, it's almost as annoying as a constant stream of right-wing lies.
  • Hegemone said on Sep 02, 2009....
Well yeah, it can be annoying.  Surprisingly I haven't come across it in emails much, what needs to be in caps and what doesn't is usually right on the mark.  It does drive me nuts if I'm chatting with somebody and they do it for no reason.  As far as that woman's scenario, I could see how she won, purely because it's so hard to really determine if she was truly being rude, it might have just been her innocent preference to do that (although it shows it seemed to be only certain emails that she did so with, but you get my point).  Then on the other hand, everybody else has generally learned that all caps and red means 'ROAR'.  So here we are, it's more about preferences and knowledge, and you can't hold it against somebody for preferring a certain style of email text and not knowing it was problematic.  I'd say as a lesson learned, companies, etc. might want to state not to write emails in all caps, or any other colors than black or blue, and then once those stipulations are set, by all means, fire away.

It's good business ettiquette - and I think she was being terribly impolite and rude.  Not sure if that should be grounds for dismissal, but certainly it is not conducive to productive working relationships with your colleagues.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Sep 02, 2009....
I find it annoying and computer ettiquette says that it's the same as yelling at the reader.  I do take into account the age of the sender.  I know my Dad might do it, not to yell, but because it's easier to read.  Firing someone for it seems extreme.  I would think a pointed conversation with her by her superiors would have solved the issue.
  • wombat said on Sep 02, 2009....

We learned this in my tech school business class--like U-I said, it's mimics "yelling" at the reader.  You all know me and I love to use my options.  I use italics, bold, underlining and sometimes CAPS to make a POINT!

But I wouldn't do a whole message in it.  Not unless I was really ticked off, as this lady was, I guess.  Still, glad she won her case! It's not a big enough deal to lose a job over for a one-time lapse into computer impoliteness!

ginger, here's my question for you today:

I know a man on my other blog that does every post in all caps and it is annoying, no matter how many times people tell him to stop, he ignores them.

Scar almost but not quite as bad.

Hege in her case I think that she used it to get her point across.
I agree that the company should set some guidelines and not just fire a person.

Wish she did get on a lot of peoples nerves, especially when they were on the receiving ends of one of her emails.

Uni it seems that she forgot all about proper etiquette, she was more interested in getting her point across. Her superiors did cross the line in firing her.

  • Balefish said on Sep 02, 2009....
ya it actually makes me quite angry. maybe I take their emotions from their words!??!?! no really tho. I hate it. Im the type that messages them and tells them to go get hit by a truck.

  • MsStar39 said on Sep 03, 2009....
Wombat that is why it is so annoying, to receive an email and someone is yelling at you about the way that you filled out a form.
Still I think that she should not have been fired over it.

Abbonzai sorry that you have to get this on a daily basis, can you complain about it?

Moonriver, LOL you should sue them and since I gave you the idea, when you win I want my share.

Ginger you don't mind the emails or blogs done in all capital fonts?

Balefish it makes a lot of people angry.

  • gingersoul said on Sep 03, 2009....
Ms......i was being silly in my comment...:-)

I do think people who write in capitals have poor people skills and zero email etiquette knowledge...
