The normal aerial and satellites dish that are seen on houses everywhere throughout the UK could soon be numbered. It looks like IPTV is soon to find its way into the UK to give us television using an Internet connection.
I think that the idea of transmitting television though the Internet connection is a good idea as long as it doesn’t affect your current internet connection. I currently pay for an 8mb/s connection but in reality get 2.3 mb/s. If I had to get my TV through the same connection I imagine the quality to be very low and it would completely block up my broadband connection. If you had a separate connection to feed the TV signal though, it would be brilliant.
The thing I like about it is that it could be wireless. You wouldn’t have to have cables draped around your room to get the cable from the dish/aerial to the TV. All you would need is a wireless router and an adaptor to fit your TV.
I have not really heard much about IPTV but it looks like ITV could soon to be the first one to offer it if the deal goes ahead with Hulu. If ITV go through with it then it won’t be long until the BBC, channel 4 and UKTV quickly follow.
But what will Internet Protocol TV mean apart from not having t have an aerial on our house. I imagine that it will open up television more to the public. With the Internet came blogs, and homemade videos on YouTube. People want to communicate and with advancements in technology comes more and more opportunities to do this. Will IPTV allow people to produce their own television programmes on their PC’s at home. Channels could pop up that give people the opportunity to take a time slot to fill with their own thing. I am not sure if it is possible but I don’t think that it will be very longs until some one comes up with a way of doing it. The one thing that will have to improve is how fast we can send information. I have just done a speed test and my upload speed was 0.27mb/s. At that speed television programmes will not be able to be broadcasted. We are going to have to look for something faster like SDSL. I am sure that it is going to be quite a few years down the line, but with TV coming through the Internet it won’t be too long I am sure.
