i guess that most of us start out typing using only one or two fingers. we search the keyboard for the right key and jab at it with our index fingers. this technique is called hunt and peck because it's a bit like a chicken eating. come to think of it, messy hand writing is also called chicken scratchings.
as we get better at typing we learn to use more fingers and we know the locations of the keys well enough that we can move our eyes ahead of our fingers or even type without looking at the keyboard. typically i use five fingers to type, throwing in an extra finger or two when i can and if i try i can almost type legible english without looking.
but tonight i became a hunter and pecker again. it is good that the hunter part is included or i would just be a pecker now. ha-ha!
in my last class we all tried to do a handstand against the wall (two kids and i) and when it was my turn i knocked the clock off the wall and it fell on my right hand, making my middle and ring fingers swell and breaking the skin of the big knuckle on my middle finger. i have had it wrapped in ice since then.
so, now i am typing with my left hand only (using the mouse is a bugger) and using two fingers only. sometimes i hit the key which changes the keyboard to japanese but since i am looking at the keyboard i don't notice right away that i am typing strange japanese mixed with the alphabet. i often hit the wrong keys too and it takes a fraction of a second longer to notice my mistake and correct it. i think the tendons of my left wrist are getting a workout they will complain about tomorrow.
moral: when doing handstands against the wall first remove any heavy objects hanging above the spot you plan to use.
