I met someone today with kind eyes.  Business associate.  I speak with him on the phone often, but until today have not met him.  I know nothing about his personal life.  He dropped by unannounced to return a couple of items he had received from us, but didn't need.

We spoke for several minutes.  It's nice to finally put a face with a name.  So often in the business world we may work closely with someone and develop work relationships with them, but still not meet face to face.  Kinda odd when you think about it.

His eyes were the first thing I noticed about him.  They weren't beautiful.  Nothing out of the ordinary really, just kind, like I could see into his soul.  I usually don't read anything when I look into someones eyes.  I wonder how accurate first impressions are.

Are the eyes really windows to the soul?  I wonder what my eyes tell people?

eyes are a powerful insight to the person inside.  I know what you mean about kind eyes.  They kind of radiate a calm and happiness.  I haven't seen your eyes, but I would guess they reflect who you are inside.

I think hind eyes make someone look younger and carefree.

Your first impressions are usually the ones that are right and the one you should follow. I am a firm believer of going with what you feel, and you obviously saw something when you looked into the eyes, so yes...the eyes can tell you a lot about a person, as well as face expressions. Go with what you feel !
btw..we are neighbors, i am also in bama !

Wow, that's really interesting.  I know I've gone through the same thing, working with somebody so much and not ever seeing them.  I've been surprised so many times.  I think that if a person is truly open and honest, their eyes just might truly be windows, but if they have hidden secrets, or other odd feelings they probably work hard to hide it.  That doesn't mean it works every time that way though.

in a way I would say yes; but some people lie well, even with their eyes

Let me tell you this; Our brain is our soul, no place else on the body for the soul. AND the brain is the only place that has lots of energy, this energy is what escapes upon death and reunites us with God.

The brain is behind the eyes, so I'd say you are on the money with this theory of yours about the eyes being the window to our souls.

    Yes, Yes, and Yes.....

How cool that you wrote this post.  I think, actuallly, that there was another post like this a couple of years back, because I remember my chance to say this:

I was once in a terrible mess, then swore off men for good.  But not long after, I spoke to this "man" in the parking lot at work that always said hi to me.

I had never paid him much attention at all.  He had a beard and glasses and hat.  I didn't care who he was.

But after my horrible "incident" I heard him say hi one more time.

I looked into his eyes through all that disguise and  I saw some compasionate brown eyes.

I asked him out for coffee a few days later.

He showed up with a suitcase and never  left.

We will have beeen married nine years this October.

I can still look across the street and see him talking to a neighbor or something, and see those dark brown eyes, as they look back at me sitting on the porch.

So, whatever you saw, I bet it was "something."

I try not to go with first impressions, as I am generally weary of my instincts.  More often than not however, my first impressions turn out to be exactly the same as my final verdict about them.

Is it because that I have these preconceived notions about people that my final judgment of them and my initial first impressions be so similar?  Hard to tell.

It's a pretty interesting question, though.

As to the eyes being windows to the soul, I haven't really thought about it much.  I have been told before that I have inviting eyes.  I guess that's generally true as I try to be accomodating when I can.

One thing I noticed about someone's eyes once was that they were filled with a certain...  how do you say it... a joie de vie, if you will.  Accompanied by a prankster's mirth.  If it is at all possible to fall in love with a pair of eyes, it happened to me.  :)

As to your eyes, post a pic and we'll tell ya!  :D

Hege - It was interesting how the impression I had of him over the phone was different than the impression I had when I saw him before knowing who he was.  Both good impressions though, Just like pieces of the puzzle falling into place, they matched.

Misty - I guess some are really good at being deceitful.

Mobil - Interesting theory,  what do your eyes tell people, are they honest, kind, energetic?  I don't understand how many emotions can be seen through the eyes, I've only noticed a few, and then not often.

Wombat - Wow!  So his eyes were the first thing that caught your attention?  Are you normally able to see something like that in someones eyes because normally I can't.  Thats amazing, I'm so happy for you.

Grape - I'm weary of my own instincts also, but then again I second guess myself over everything!  It's hard to tell if my judgments are correct, since it's usually someone you meet in passing and never come into contact again.  I don't think my eyes tell very much about me.  But then again maybe that is accurate, my eyes tell very little b/c I'm secretive, I share myself, my mind, ideas, opinions with very few so therefore my eyes are very mysterious, show very little!

Maybe not "normally" and maybe I've missed a few good people along the way in my life because of it?  But I am sure I was meant to look past that beard, those glasses and hat--and see this pair of eyes.

(btw--he's since shaved the beard, but kept his mustache.  And I peeked under that once when he was asleep to see what his lips looked like!)

    Eyes can lie.
  • alabamagirl said on Aug 25, 2009....
Mixed - I agree completely!  Thats exactly why I wonder how accurate our impressions of others are.  I guess sometimes we are right on target and other times, maybe not so close.

I saw an interesting horror movie that explored this concept. It was called Sublime. The conclusion of that movie was no, the eyes are not the window to a person's soul. I haven't quite formed my own opinion on this.
